Flop?

Yes 35 76.09%

No 11 23.91%

Total:46

I wouldn't call it a flop just yet, although the first week is not promising at all, I'm not sure about the legs, but just like you said they will certainly be cut short by next-gen and strong holiday current gen lineup.
That's unfortunately the case these days it seems. The generational fatigue is big, people just don't seem to give a fuck these days if the game is not from a big brand (Tomb Raider, Bioshock) or were brilliant and hyped to unbelievable levels (The Last of Us).
There were already a lot of flops this year even though the combined install base looks huge - Remember Me, Fuse, Metro Last Light, Moto GP and so on, they all sold poorly and we have more contenders like Puppeteer(very unfortunate).
Looks like core gamers are hyped for GTA V and it will sell amazingly, and the rest games will be fueled by casuals like the annuals Battlefield, Call of Duty, Fifa, Ass Creed.

Next gen on the other hand seems to excite the core audience, pre orders are huge considering the potential install base.

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

Yes, it must be a big disappointment for Ubisoft, even though have shown in interviews that they are very aware that this gen has gone on too far and that we need a new gen ASAP to generate interest and increased sales.

2013 is a very difficult year for all games that are not natural blockblusters. So many who have underperformed already.

Depends. If you're talking about stuff like Gears of War and God of War, I think they performed as expected, given there were not sequels to blockbusters. Even if they carry a powerful name, many knew they were simply end-of-the-gen cash-ins and both companies treated them as such. But, The Last Of Us shattered many of the doubter's predictions (mine not being one of them, since I knew better), Tomb Raider, Infinite, and Last Light all performed well. I'd say 2013 has been a good year for games, certainly better than the travesty that was 2012.

Really? I think the only expcetion is The Last of Us, who surpassed expectations even saleswise.

Dead Space 3 is tracking far far behind the other two.

Crysis 3 is tracking far far behind.

You mentioned Gears and God. Slightly above 1 million if I'm not mistaken? That's awful for such big franchises.

Tom Raider, even Squyare Enix revealed it underperformed.

Personally I think Biochock Infinite hugely underperformed given it's a 94% Meta or something.

DMC, ultra-bomb despite 85% Meta.

Metro Last Lite bombed too. 200K on X360 for a +80% Meta and a game who got praised and pushed by THQ.

Snipper 2, only 120K on X360. The first one sold over 1 million.

Fuse. 90K combined on PS360.

- Erm, according to Deep Silver, Metro: Light Light did NOT bomb. So scratch that.

- Bioshock, as I said, didn't bomb either. Metas don't reflect what a game should sell, or Ico/Shadow of the Colossus would be expected to sell 5-10 million or more.

- My stance on Gears and GoW remains. They weren't expected to perform like the others, and if you expected it, you're predictions need adjusting.

- Nobody had any major expectation for Sniper GW2. Pointless to even bring it up.

- Tomb Raider is an iffy one, because if it really was that bad, a sequel wouldn't already be in the works.

- Fuse, Dead Space 3, and Cry3 I'll give you.

No, this year hasn't been that difficult, as you claimed. Most of the big stuff did just fine, especially as end-of-gen titles.

All right, maybe it's not that bad, but I just want to be clear in that I think 2012 was a fairly weak and difficult year too for game sales.

And going forward, I think we're seeing many titles who get almost no hype in the transition period of two generations. I'm very worried for the sales of these guys, such as The Evil Within, Thief, Elder Scrolls Online, Castlevania 2, Dying Light. Most hype and attention is naturally focused on the next console tech, and the new IP blockbusters. Some titles will suffer from that.

In France it's a disaster : on PS3 it did less than Tales of Xillia that had no advertising at all.
