Forums - Gaming - So you're still not convinced about Unity Engine being the best thing to happen to gaming in a while?

I've said it for a while Unity Engine is the best thing to happen to gaming recently, why? its cross platform and it looks incredible and runs on even phones without any lag at all, people thought "meh, it looks really outdated" because they were ignorant by the fact that textures really isn't what this engine is all about , but for the people who still think textures are everything, here is a tech demo that shows that.

Warning NSFW

Keep in mind that what is impressive about this isn't the fact that it looks photorealistic, again its the fact that It is Cross Platform, meaning you can run it on your Phone, Tablet, Browser, Laptop, Desktop, Console, or whatever and when you create graphics on one thing you can easily port it to another platform without any tweaking (hence the name Unity).

Right now I'm working on a little hobby project to see what comes out of it.  Its very small scale, just myself working on it.  I'm using Unity for the engine and writing the scripts (JavaScript) in MonoDevelop (its the IDE that comes with Unity)

I'm trying to use all free software, so I'll be making simple 3D models in Blender and textures with GIMP.

I know how to use Maya, but I only have a student version (so I can't make anything commercial with it)

I know how to use PhotoShop too, and now that they have the Creative Cloud service I have been thinking about getting a subscription just for PhotoShop

Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League

Odd question, why is it that the females look more real than the men? Are females easier to do or something?

I'm also a hobbyist, not planning to release anything for profit myself, Have you tried Sculptris ? I personally find Blender pretty hard to use, I rather use Zbrush, but that isn't free , Sculptris on the other hand is a good Zbrush alternative and its free.

Textured by a guy so he probably put more detail on women than men

Well. My "Game Engine" has been in the works for a good decade, doesn't support any form of 3D accelleration what-so-ever and written in Objective C and only supports the PC and only goes up to a paltry 720P resolution. :P

I even did all the art for it in Microsoft Paint. :)

It might become the next Minecraft! Bahaha. (Not!)

The rocks were open source, the rest was by hand, I'm not that artistic.
The Roads and sand is just a flat colour, with lighter shades randomly speckled on top for instance.

For example, upscaled rock that I did: http://i.imgur.com/cw0HY4W.png
