Forums - Nintendo - What If Nintendo Waited Until This Year To Launch The Wii U?

So if Nintendo waited til this year to launch the Wii U along side the X1 and PS4 I think they would be in a way better position.  For one they would have seen how powerful the competition is and made some adjustments to the Wii U to make it stronger.  Also if all the games coming out this year was its launch line up I have no doubt it would blow away the PS4 and X1, especially if you add in its strong 2014 line up.  Tbh it might have the best launch line up of all time.  There would be NSMBU, Lego City Undercover, WW HD, Wonderful 101, Donkey Kong TF, Super Mario 3D World , Pikmin 3, ZombiU, Sonic Lost World and maybe they would have been able to keep Rayman Legends as an exclusive, at least for a while and I'm sure I'm forgetting a couple games.  To me that blows away the X1 and PS4 launch lineup.  I think Nintendo would have dominated if they would have waited an extra year to launch the Wii U.  So what do you guys think, was launching last year the right call or should they have waited?

what do you mean if they waited...

They thought they were doing the right thing when they launched. The Wii had been selling very poorly at the time so it was time for an upgrade. Plus they couldn't have expected for 3rd parties to completely abandon the system. Remember EA's "unprecedented partnership"?

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

To be fair, only EA and Take-Two completely abandoned system. Nintendo never worked with Bethesda in the first place.

That would be like...overpowered. And if everyone died of hype, there would be no sales. This is the real reason Nintendo did'nt release this holliday. You kinda do not want your fanbase to LITERALLY die:P

Despite the rough year, I think they launched it at the right time. It will pick up now. B4 the competition comes out, Nintendo will have fixed all of the bugs with the Wii U and decreased the price. There will no doubt be issues with Ps4s and XBones at launch

I made this thread awhile back, this is what I think Nintendo should have done to keep Wii going strong for an extra 1-2 years and prevent post launch Wii U drought.

2011 Wii games
Q1-Xenoblade Chronicles
Q2-Fortune Street
Q3-Kirby Return to Dreamland
Q4-Nintendo Land, Skyward Sword, Just Dance, Skylanders

2012 Wii games
Q1-Last Story
Q2-Pandora Tower
Q3-Pikmin 3
Q4-New Super Mario World, Just Dance, Skylanders

2013 Wii games
Q1-Rayman Legends
Q2-Lego City Undercover
Q3-Disney Infinity
Q4-Just Dance, Skylanders

Wii U launch-32gb w/Nintendo World-$299
Launch exclusives-Super Mario 3D World, DKC Tropical Freeze, Wii Party U, Mario & Sonic Olympics, ZombiU (could have used extra polishing)
Other launch titles-Skylanders, Call of Duty, Just Dance, Assassins Creed, Watch Dogs, Batman, Scribblenauts, Battlefield 4, EA Sports titles

2014 Wii U games

Q1-Sonic Lost World, Wonderful 101, Wind Waker HD

Q2-Mario Kart 8, Wii Fit U, Bayonetta 2

Q3-Smash Bros, SMTxFE, Yarn Yoshi

Q4-Zelda U, X, Wii Sports U

If wii u came out this holiday, a lot of those games would have been on wii.

However it would have been the best november in the history of the world!

It's a really difficult question. I mean there are multiple factors at play here.

A) Had Nintendo waited until 2013 to launch Wii U, what would have been released for Wii in Q4 last year that would have driven the holiday sales? NSMBU and Nintendo Land were built for Wii U. Nintendo wouldn't have released a second NSMB for the same console, as Iwata has stated in the past it's a "one-per-console series". So there's that, right? What would have been the first-party games for Wii in 2012 if there had been no Wii U launch until 2013.

B) More importantly, had Nintendo waited, they would be going up against the assault of the Xbox One and PS4 pissing contest. All the shooters, all the racing games, next-gen blockbuster glitz and glamour, etc. Nintendo's never been into that kind of thing. They would have been over-looked and Wii U wouldn't be viewed well in comparison to the more powerful competition. I think that releasing in 2012 was the right thing to do, I just think that they had to delay too many games outside of the original launch window, and thus sales dried up due to extremely low demand. I mean, no one wants to pay $349 for a console with no new software. They clearly over-estimated long-term demand for NSMBU and Nintendo Land, and under-estimated the development time for Pikmin 3, Wii Party U, and Wonderful 101. The perfect storm that kills the momentum of any new game system.

C) Wii U sits much prettier this year as a one-year old console, 1) For the Nintendo fans who love Mario and Zelda, 2) For the Xbox 360/ PS3 owners who want something new but aren't ready to jump onto PS4/ Xbox One until next year or the year after, and 3) The family-friendly mass-market audience that looks far more appealing to people looking for "having fun with the family at home" with Mario or Wii Party, instead of playing CoD or Kill Zone on PS4, and 4) Lower price = more affordable point of entry than the competition
