Forums - Microsoft - Why does Microsoft rely on timed exclusive DLC so much?

Jay it dosnt work, and people like me avoid buying dlc that does this. Ill just move on to a new game. No big deal.

So youre saying that people who have both consoles wont buy let's say X360 version over PS3 version?  A few examples of this is Call of Duy which sells more on X360 and Assassin's Creed with PS3.

Not to mention you have diehard fans for these franchises that wants all content.  No it is not something that will sell as many consoles as say Uncharted/Halo but just like Halo and uncharted, Call of Duty/FIFA/Battlefield/Assassins Creed etc all has die hard fans as well.

Do you think that Sony/MSFT has just been wasting their money all these years?  Or do you think they have noticed a trend that includes more copies sold than competitors and more money banked from DLC.

Ill say this right now, businesses dont repeat failed attempts.  They repeat success.

They have LOADS of money.

They have tried to invest in their internal studios, but that will take time and buying exclusives outright is too expensive. Instead, they are trying to get every little advantage they can.

They also need to improve in Europe, hence their FIFA tie-up.

But I have said this before, I find either side buying up tiny bits of exclusive content really annoying

I am willing to bet Microsoft has spent nearly 2-3 billion on third party games DLC, Perks, timed exclusivity, or exclusivity.

absolutely !

It works even in the opposite direction for me: I almost always wait for the GOTY/Gold/Full Package- Edition or don´t bother at all !

Even if it successful. I still see it as a waste of money. I'm sure if MS didn't do this timed exclusive content over the years, Xbox 360 would still get decent 1st party support. I know Sony does this practice but for only one game, compared to 3 or 4 with MS. Since Playstation and Xbox share most 3rd party games, exclusives are far more necessary to distinguish which one to buy. Early DLC is not a good enough reason to buy a new console i don't think, while buying it for an exclusive game is.

Microsofts first party support throughout the years has been pretty dismal when you tally it all up from day one to now. Only four games survived gen one and those were Fable, Halo, Forza and Project Gotham. Basically the same thing for gen 2 just take away Project Gotham and add Crackdown.

it's actually a smart move for MS to do

It basically gives the people a reason to buy it on "this" console over "that" console

It worked perfectly when they went after the American market. They already had Halo and Call Of Duty was a blockbuster waiting to happen when 360 released so if they wanted to fully take the market, they would have to aim for the biggest games in that market which was Grand Theft Auto at the time.

Since they couldn't get it fully exclusive for a year they did the next best thing they could do and that was to get exclusive dlc on for the Xbox version of Grand Theft Auto. People would have regularly bought it for PS3 so MS ave Americans a reason to buy their favorite game on Xbox instead of PlayStation

Fifa is the main game in Europe so that is why they are trying to go after it now. They are even going the extra mile by giving Fifa away free to the people who pre order Xbox One LOL

smh!

well, sony and microsoft seem to throw a lot of their money on third party developers and i have no clue why they think that helps. sure, if only microsoft or sony would do it but when both do it the outcome will be like nothing.

microsoft: let's throw money on the division, fifa, cod, garden warfare and so on..

sony: let's throw money on asscreed, destiny, all those indie games we had on the e3 stage (that's why they release first on ps4), watch dogs and so on...

so, what exactly does that help? sony is stealing sales from microsoft and microsoft from sony and with that they both lose the same amount of sales as they gain lol.

the fucked one is the customer. i will buy both consoles anytime in the future but what does that mean? if more friends own fifa on a ps4 i have to buy the worse version to play with most of them and if more of my friends own destiny on xb1 i have to buy the worse version to play with most of them? awesome!

btw funny that people act as if only microsoft is doing it when sony does the same and did in the past (bf3 dlc as example)

These companies have numbers to back up their claim. Why do you think it happens all the time? What is your proof?

Wheres yours?

Definitely not quite billion, but they did reportedly spend $50m on timed exclusive GTA IV DLC and the same again for Titanfall timed exclusivity

There is a lot of money changing hands here

It could of been better if MS would stop buying timed exclusive DLC. Think about it, they paid for a year exclusivity for GTA IV's DLC. Get Cod DLC one month early since MW2 and others. It all adds up. I dread to think how much they had to give to rockstar to get the lost and damned and the ballad of gay tony a year before PS3 or PC.
