Forums - Nintendo - Mario 3D Land/World=old school Mario

So ive seen countless complaining about 3D World not being groundbreaking like Mario 64 or Galaxy but I think what its trying to do is capture thr feel of NES/SNES Mario games and apply it to 3D.

If u took a game like Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario World and tried imagining what it would look or play like in 3D, would u picture Mario 64, Sunshine or Galaxy? Probably not and most likely u would imagine something similar to 3D Land/World.

The 3D Mario games we have come to know and enjoy since the N64 are nothing like the NES/SNES Mario games and really the only thing that is related are the characters. If u took Mario 64, Sunshine or Galaxy and changed the characters u would likely never say "this reminds me of Mario" but if u changed the characters in 3D Land, u could easily compare it too the old school Mario games just in 3D.

I dont see the need to condemn 3D World for trying to go back to its roots.

yes i understand that, but the 3D Mario games are soooooo much better than the 2D ones.
still excited for 3D World though, if it's anything like Super Mario World, then it'll have long levels, which i love

I absolutely loved Super Mario 3D land. I will happily take either a 3d-land-esque game (which is what we are getting) or a traditional 3D mario (hopefully sometime in the future) with equal excitement

2D Mario and 3D Mario don't need to be mixed though; 3D Mario was great on its own terms, the addition of 2D Mario conventions is unnecessary and doesn't improve it.

I'm ok with 3d world but I hope we get that super awesome Mario no one was expecting

though this could be the best Mario yet, who knows

if by better you mean enjoyed more, than i'd have to totally disagree.  I've played every 3d mario hoping to see what everyone else does, but there all just so boaring with awful combat.  I got to demo 3dworld and was pleasantly suprised.  Hoping it's the 1st mario title i'll actually enjoy.

Its not mixing it, its classic Mario in a 3D environment. The 3D titles on N64/GC/Wii are essentially spin off since they are nothing at all like traditional Mario.

Classic Mario doesn't need 3D either. What works in 2D doesn't look like it works so well in 3D, in my view.

Have you played Super Mario 3D land?  The game is excellent, and contains one of the most difficult platforming challenges (the last secret level) I have ever experienced, rivaling even some of the most notoriously difficult games of the NES era.
