You people who also have a serious partner and/or kids, how much are you allowed to play games on average?

I have a partner and a little son and I only play after the little boy went to sleep. So normally, from 9pm - 12pm. So that's three hours a day, but I don't play games every day. Sometimes, I rather watch a movie, read a book or something like that. Those three hours are all of my free time. I get up at 6 in the morning and then work until 1pm or so. (I work as a freelancer from home so that time varies). While working, I also look after my son and when I'm done that continues. My girlfriend is working so most of the time I'm alone with him. But he's just 9 months old, he's starting to go everywhere he's not supposed to so you really can't let him be on his own, not even for a minute. But I'm sure it will get better when he gets older.

All in all, at the moment I don't have too much free time, but it's ok. Especially since I got a job where I can work as I want to, I don't have a boss, I don't have specific times and I don't need to get out of the house. I also don't need to work 8 hours every day, I rarely work longer than 6 hours. Just last month I had a client that payed really well (0.12 € per word, I'm a writer) [that would be around 36 € before tax just for this post, just to give you an idea] and so I didn't need to work for more than 2 hours a day and still had more than enough money on my hands. But with a full-time job, wife and kids, I can't imagine how you would have any free time aside from the days you don't need to work.

But as my interests are changing, Gaming sure isn't as important anymore to me as it was in the 90s. That's why for the coming generation, I'm sticking to only one console (no, not that ONE :P) while I had all three of them last time. But I can't see that I'm quitting gaming anytime soon. I'm even looking forward to when my son is old enough to play with me. ^^

Thank you, interesing post.

Lots of things here that go through my head too. I have been thinking if that's the only chance, to be able to have free time including gaming when my GF and future son (or daughter) have both gone to bed. I'm a night owl even on workdays so there's a chance I too could get a couple of hours of gaming on late nights.

About interests I already had that phase when I lost interest in games. It was many years ago. But then I re-discovered games again. It's my biggest interest and I think it will remain so even after I get children (if you exclude the child itself as an interest).

What country you live in? That sure is good pay for writing some words! Lucky you.

I'm from germany. But the pay varies, there are also bad times and really bad times when I don't get any clients at all. That's the downside of it.

My Problem is otherwise. I have enough Money to buy every game i want but not enough time to Play every game.

The Problem in todays economy is this

The People which have Money have no time
The People which have time have no money

I "only" have about 40 current-gen games. I work 35h a week. My wife does most chores and doesn't give a fuck how much I play. If I dislike a game I have no problem abandoning it (quit ME trilogy half-way through ME2).

So no, I have no problem. I'm currently waiting for GTAV to release and I'm replaying TLOU on survivor until then...

Was ME that bad to you?

I have a huge backlog and ME is one of the games in it. Actually ME2 and ME3. I am not sure if I can afford to play ME1 time-wise.

I am already anxious about all the hours I have to put into ME2 and ME3. I am almost hoping it will suck so I can abandon it like you did.

What's the estimated play through for Mass Efect games?

And also, can somebody link to that link where there were great estiamtions of playthroug times for all popolar games?

I have the same problem. My wife and I make good money, don't have any debt outside of our mortgage, and have no kids. I'm 31 and she's almost 28, and we're planning on having kids when she's 30 or so, so the PlayStation 4 will be my last childless console launch.

What I've started doing is being much more selective on what I play, and it's been hard, but I've admitted to myself that I can't be a completionist on every single game I play. Thankfully my wife supports my habit and enjoys watching me play story driven games.

Being able to afford games without the time to play them definitely sucks though. I've actually used personal time a few times so I could take a day off work just to game.

I think this is something everyone does when they get older: narrow their hobbies. There's only so much time in the day after all.
