Forums - Nintendo - The Wonderful 101 Will Launch With Just 30,000 Copies In Japan

Tagged games:

maybe just a missquote on the number ?
30k seems way too low, on the other hand 300k would stretch it a bit ...

if not nintendo is most likely again undershipping a game and it will be sold old in seconds.
maybe they want to sell this game digital to boost their profits ?

30k x 25-30$ for nintendo = 750k - 900k so only with japan Nintendo will probably make 20mill profit because wii U games are so cheap to make

Have you missed the news man?!!!!1 the game's budget is higher than Bayoneta's!!!!!!

bayonetta is a wii U game!!?!?!?!?!!! so extremely cheap to make probably 400k or less

Even if being on the Wii U somehow made developement significantly cheaper (seriously doubt it considering we're still looking at the first year with the hardware), Kamiya still maintains the games costed 1.5 times the amount Bayonetta did.

And no, Bayonetta was certainly not cheap considering it barely made a profit on nearly 2 million sold.

Granted, it took a considerable price cut to reach 2 million as well as hardware licensing fees as a 3rd party game that W101 won't have to deal with... But even assuming there was a price cut to $20 in every region right after each's respective first week, we're looking at a minimum of $21 million before digital sales going to Sega that barely covered the cost of things.

If we instead assume the first 10 weeks in all regions were sold at full price (which is more realistic), the new minimum becomes about $26 million before digital.

If we are to assume $26 million barely covered the costs, and W101's costs are 1.5 times as much as Bayonettas... Well, since we don't know exactly how MUCH they profited on Bayonetta when everything was said and done, it's proabably a given they need to sell well over a million full priced W101 to not take a loss assuming Nintendo does indeed get $30 (since they don't have to worry about a platform license fee given it's their platform) after paying off shipping and material costs for every copy sold to retail.

I'm going to go ahead and start pulling numbers out of my ass and assume that the Bayonetta budget was infact $22 million, and the $4 million profit is considered small. If that's the case, W101 would need to hit 1.1 million sold at full price to break even. If it was instead $24 million budget for Bayonetta, then 1.2 million sold at full price would be required for W101, etc etc etc.

Does Nintendo basically get like pure profit off their digital releases? Because there's no shipping, packaging, manufacturing/disc cost and no retail mark up either, so that would mean a digital download of any game is $50+ back in their pocket right.

Maybe that's why they're trying to possible channel more sales to digital with this one, cut out the retailer ($10-$15 they pocket per copy) and manufacturing/shipping cost (lets say another $5-7), that definitely ramps up the profit.

I want to support this game in best way possible though, and I think that would be to download it, but I want a physical copy too :(. Maybe I'll download it, and try and see if I can get a physical copy on clearance for like $20 ala Sin & Punishment, but my guess is NOA is not going to ship a lot either.

I think you right, actually, they may have looked at projections and realized they didn't have a very secure chance of reaching profitability if they didn't force a significant amount of the would be buys to digital instead.

And Gamestop buys $60 games for $35 from what I understand, leaving first party publishers like Nintendo only $30 per unit if we are to assume shipping and packaging is $5, so I guess that would mean digital is twice as profitable if server costs really are completely accounted for seperately.

Damn.. It's like they said, "hey, we KNOW our sales for this game are gonna BOMB, might as well do it on our own terms!"

That's a very low figure. One can only guess that they expect very low sales for this game in Japan or Nintendo is trying to generate a launch day rush.

At the very least W101 is another piece of software in the wii u's pathetic library.

It's a Platinum developed game. If it sells north of 500k globally lifetime it'll be one of their best selling games on any individual platform.

Ah. Well that's more than a little disappointing.

That's not much. At all. I guess the game wasn't very expensive to make then, but wasn't this supposed to be one of those key Wii U exclusives to give the machine better sales?

That's bad. Hopefully, things will turn around for Wii U soon

I called it. Was one of only 3 persons here who perdicted less than 200K before year's end.

Well more proof that Nintendo really isn't even trying in regards to the Wii U at least in regards to Japan... which is understandable but really a poor showing. If they were worried about it having a poor physical retail showing like most console retail in Japan, they should have done something different. Announce the initial shipment is a early release limited edition version with some sort of bonus/prize or if it is retailers that aren't biting promote the consumer getting the eShop digital copy.

Just having a weak initial shipment of 30K is almost an insult to Platinum for the work they clearly put into this game. You'd think after Pikmin 3 had such a decent showing they'd recognize that the Wii U install base they do have might be hungry and give even a new IP like Wonderful 101 a shot.
