Forums - Microsoft - Windows 8 dev: I’ve heard Windows Store may be coming to Xbox One

VideoGamer

Flaregames' communications chief Gunnar Lott may have dropped a major hint as to what to expect from Microsoft's upcoming Xbox One Indie announcement, expected to be discussed during the firm's Gamescom showcase event tomorrow.

Speaking during Microsoft’s GDC Europe talk, "Be what's next – Microsoft's commitment to Indie success", Lott claimed that he had heard Microsoft's Windows Store – the app store used on Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 – may be coming to Xbox One.

But when asked about the subject again later in the talk, Microsoft technical evangelist Kristina Rothe chose not to confirm or deny the rumour, claiming that she didn't know.

"Let's wait for the coming announcements," she said. "It's going to be great I can only assume because obviously this whole cross-platform thing is really important, but I don't know anything unfortunately.

"Even if I did," she joked, "I couldn’t tell you without having to kill you all."

Rothe added that she believed an announcement regarding Indie development on Xbox One was due this week.

Flaregames previously released Royal Revolt on Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, alongside other mobile platforms.

Microsoft revealed plans to allow self-publishing on Xbox One last month. More details are promised for Gamescom.

This could be huge. Pretty much any mobile app/game could be ported to Xbox One and replacing the touch interface with Kinect would be very intuitive.

Gaining access to windows 8/phone 8 apps would be a huge advantage over other consoles and a big plus for indies.

They're shutting down Zune so they can combine it to "Xbox Music" and they're shutting down GFWL so that they can intergrate it to Windows 8 and since Xbox One uses Windows 8 as an OS both of these services are going to be on Xbox One, this move is important for MS so that they can have all their services in one Eco system across their multiple products , Xbox , Tablets, Phones, and Windows 8, every purchase you do with any of them is going to sync into the cloud so that you would use it on any of your devices, they are not shutting them down because "They're giving up"

This isn't necessarily good news to the core gamer crowd, but the casual crowd will love this. More ability to play those phone/tablet games is a big seller. I have brought this up in other threads, and mostly got flack because "we don't want those games". The thing is, they know you don't want them. This capability is for what XboxOne was really aiming for - the crossover appeal to sell these to people outside the core gamers. This is the reason that Kinect is required and won't just go away. Whether people who frequent this site like it or not, digital download gaming is already the norm in tablet/phones and is gaining "Steam" in PC. Within the next 2 years, it will probably be the standard for consoles(yes, even the PS4). Like it or not, here it comes. The only bad part that i can see is the hardship put on developers to try and release a AAA game at anything more than $30 when so much content will be out there for under $10. This won't really expand the crowd buying AAA gamestoo much, as they want cheap titles with short play periods.

So I could play Spartan Assault without having to buy a smartphone? Cool. I'll take that if true.
