Forums - Gaming - [Update: Jennifer Hepler left BioWare this week to begin work on a book about narrative design and do some freelance work (with a Polygon link)] BioWare writer quits after death threats to family

Like her or hate her, there's no reason to make death threats against her or her family. Pathetic, childish, and immature.

Man that is rough, Id probably quit aswell, good on her for staying at it for so long.

This is all a result of the disconnect and desensitizing of the gaming community and society in general. Read any comments on a story or forum posts and you'll find all kinds of statements in like manner.

You can defend freedom of speech and people just expressing their opinions all you want, but there is nothing beneficial about intelligent creatures "communicating" the way we see constantly online (and yes, that includes this forum).

Though her reasons for leaving obviously were more than the threats, the whole concept behind that Polygon article is embarrassing. I'm embarrassed as a gamer and as a human being. We really need to be so much better ...

I don't get why people would ever send death threats over a video game.

I really think you should edit this post as it has been debunked following the actual story on Polygon being updated. This story is sensationalism and untrue.... Here is the REAL reason she left Bioware below.

Jennifer Hepler left BioWare this week to begin work on a book about narrative design and do some freelance work. Her most recent job title was senior writer on Dragon Age: Inquisition. But it was Dragon Age 2 that led to the death threats, the threats against her family and children and the harassment.

When asked if the harassment led to her depature, Hepler told Polygon "No, leaving Bioware was for family reasons. I am going to be working on a text book on narrative design among other game-related freelance projects."

Doesn't excuse folks posting death threats to developers' Twitter or email but the story has spun out of control at this point.

I just put an edit at the bottom of the post for why she actually left with the Polygon link.

Wow that is just pure evil right there. I can't imagine how twisted someone has to be to say stuff like that.

As Ive been saying. The gaming community is one of, if not the most immature communities right now.

Immature isn't going far enough. It's like someone gave a bunch of prepubescent 12 year olds guns and knives after spiking their Sunny D with cocain. What's not shocking is that the treats came from people we can assume are EA supporters. So everything we've ever said about those gamers who pray at the alter of DLC and unfinished titles seems to be right; they're bat shit crazy.

Much of this could be avioded through the study of the gamer matrix.

We all get angry sometimes, here on the internet. The key, in my experience, has been making threats so over-the-top that no-one could possibly think i was serious
