Forums - Gaming - Sony Reaches Programming Deal With Viacom for Online Pay-TV Service

that is good deal for sony and maybe people will start to realize that there is no "gaming console" anymore (well, maybe from nintendo but not even they release a classical console) if this will be also used for ps4.

microsoft said once that people use the xbox more hours for multimedia stuff as for games and netflix said once that the ps3 is the most used console for netflix which probably means that the ps3 is also used more for movies, apps and music as for gaming.

no clue how it will be next gen but i could see the average time people use the xb1 and ps4 like 75% for anything not gaming and 25% gaming. maybe even less for gaming.

not really a wonder that they also start to advertise their upcoming consoles as a multimedia device (microsoft more than sony) when that is as what people will use them for.

but well, i never understood the complaints about that since i don't think this means microsoft or sony will invest less in games as they would do without all this multimedia stuff. pc gamers use all the awesome possibilities besides gaming as argument for a gaming pc and many console gamers use it as negative point of the competitions console lol.

If you think MS isn't planning something like this already, you're bonkers. Especially since the 360 itself already supported being a set top box for SKY as well as supported on demand options from Comcast and Verizon.

Seems like you didn't think this one through very well... MS's solution provides more flexibility in that cable companies don't have to develop their own special apps or agree to full content rights/support. MS can either do the HDMI-IN with the new Xbox One guide, or offer a full app or their own IPTV service like they've been working on for ages already.

You're welcome :)

im guessing sony will have a better supported web brouser with the obvious flash/java support that sky's online customers have acces to via PC's, that in turn eliminates the sky tv argument but also an enhanced web brouser would pave the way for online TV broadcasters like TVcatchup to work on the ps4 giving even greater flexability, i think one point you missed was the instalation fee's and subscription fees, sony could have negotiated to get a really good deal.

You really think a browser developed by sony will be better than Internet Explorer on Xbox One?

Wow...

I probably won't use it when I get my PS4.

When Sony joined the gaming industry they ended the notion of a gaming console just being for games. This is nothing new. Microsoft just accelerated the vision.

Shutters at the thought of using IE.

But yes, I'd take the web browser on vita over IE anyday. I guess some people just dont know. Sonys really good a lot of things.

Meh. That list of channels is pretty shitty imho, aside from a very small selection of CC content. Which I can watch online for free.

Might be a cool subscription for people without television though.
