Forums - Sony - PS4 will make $1.2bn each year from PS Plus, analyst estimates

So for 2012, $140 million divided by $50 = 2 800 000 suscribers

Im surprised the number is that low........it is going to be a tough battle convincing a userbase who is used to playing free online to adopt the Xbox Live model, free games or no free games.

I somehow feel any poster who argues the merits of PS Plus loses credibility from this point....since the majority of PS3 users clearly don't see the merits themselves.

No, that doesn't make any sense, especially considering PS+ membership "nearly doubled" after E3.

It would be hard for me to argue against PS+, considering I'm already a member.   Clearly, I thought it had value even before it became a multi-player pay-gate.  Even then, my two biggest complaints about Gold have always been that putting video/non-gaming services behind a pay-gate is bad and that the service offers no intrinsic value beyond what it takes away in the first place.

I don't really like multi-player being gated off but as long as they make it worthwhile, I can't complain all that much.  I mean, seriously, I like what PS+ brings to the table even without multi-player and I would have kept subscribing regardless.

I really have no idea why you think this when the competition offers an even more substantive paywall.

Does not compute?

Firstly, I don't consider $10 substantive. But also its the idea of the dozens of millions of PS gamers who spent their lives feeling entitled that multiplayer should be free. It is a tough battle because offering a lot of free games won't be enough to change their minds based on principle. This will take time, and will get to a point where they must choose between principle and the awesome PS4 games. Games will win out, they always do, but it will take time for transition purposes.

The Xbox crowd is used to it, and anybody going in is expecting it. The PS crowd is still by and large, new to it all. I am suspicious that the average gamer who doesn't follow internet gaming news, is even aware that PS4 online requires PS Plus.

The substantivity was not solely monetarily.

You think people will not buy a console due to principle? This isn't a movie, this is the real world. If consumers want something, they will buy it regardless if it goes against their principles.

I still think there is no reason to pay for online if it's p2p, that's why dedicated servers for XBO and PS4 are VITAL. XBO will have the advantage here with a solid foundation for providing a dedicated experience if the devs want it.

It's funny that you argue that people won't know about the paywall going in, but if I asked if you knew about the XBL paywall going into purchasing a 360 I think you'd be singing a different tune.

Just classic hypocrisy. I'm used to it here.

Yes I am assuming this is revenue.

Just curious... these are estimates and not real numbers... 2.8m users is really high.

It is? Seems extremely low. Thats only like 3-4% of the userbase of PS3, and it could be less when adding in Vita. Xbox Live is closer to 30-40% I believe.

Just goes to show the Sony dominated internet is once again a flawed view of reality. Sony fans online make it seem like everyone has PS+.

Like I said, they will have to chose between principle and games....and games will win out. But by no means will the transition be like the snap of a finger. That was my point.

Your 360 line is a bit confusing, because I allready said that a Xbox gamer is used to the idea, but to a PS gamer the idea is still in the process of being embraced.

Its less hypocrisy and more of a cultural difference between Xbox and PS gamers, IMO.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

All I know is everybody wins, because with PlayStation Plus, I feel like I'm stealing. The value is incredible.

I find the numbers good considering that nobody really needed it. PS+ didn't really take-off until mid 2012 when the "Instant game library" started.

Just responding to your statement about consumers buying things regardless of their principles.  I disagree.  There are a lot of things I don't buy due to principle, regardless of whether I want it or not.

Huh I thought a lot of people had PS Plus. Those are some very low subscription numbers, I would've thought PS Plus had around 5-7 million subscribers at least.

Yeah they do, I was under that impression for the longest time just to find out not very many have the service at all.
