Forums - Gaming - What Next Gen Games Are Not Just Current Gen Games That Look Pretty?

Nintendo Land

Generally, the first year or so, games are really just last gen games with polish. After a couple years though, new things that people didn't even THINK about start hitting etc. Who knows that they'll be. I'm betting on indie games myself.

The level of fluid animation, mo-cap and scale would not have been possible on the PS2. The closest you would get to it would be RE4.

So worse graphics ;)

.

Well graphics are a big part of a videogame or else theres no game. Ai gets smarter as well.

graphics got good enough a long time ago. and AI has been the same dumb crap for years now, it's not a hardwre problem for any platform, just lack of focus.

Photorealism and human like AI is the goal. That should tell you just how patheic current gen graphics are and how far we have to go.

We do not judge what is and isnt. We are not developers. We are consumers.

I disagree. I think it's the consumers who should judge, because they are the ones buying it.

Recently, developers have done on record, stating that next gen AAA games won't cost much more than current gen AAA games. As tech improves, costs stay relative. We WILL get to human like AI and photo realism. Maybe not this gen, maybe not next, but it'll happen. Until then, progress won't stop.

and when the time comes it will still be irrelevant for gaming. a tecnological acomplishment? sure. but unrelated to gaming.

It is very related to video games, imagine playing The Elder Scrolls XV with perfect realism, from a graphics and ai standpoint.  Imagine instead of having dialogue choices, you can have a  completely unscripted conversation.

Perfect human AI with perfect visuals is the goal to some extent, because it is at that point that you can't improve any more.

Neither perfect human AI nor photorealistic visuals are the be all end all of gaming.  Human AI is not intrinsically more fun than non human AI, and photorealism is not intrinsically superior to stylized graphics.  If photorealism was the be all end all, then there would be no reason for animated films.

Right. Because AI inprovments are completely unrelated to gaming.

Sounds like someone didn't play Rage.
