Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo still selling Wii U at a loss

Even it that "article" is terrible, the Wii U being sold at a loss should be a lesson for Nintendo: FOR GOD'S SAKE STOP USING CUSTOMIZED HARDWARE. Nintendo should've learnt that by now, it makes everything harder for developers, it's more expensive on the R&D part, and it's more expensive in production. The Wii U's hardware is just too expensive for what it is.

Yeah I agree, I think even they do internally now. Heavily customized hardware simply isn't worth it, no one cares that a Wii U only consumes 33 watts of electricity, lol.

Also c'mon Nintendo, your internal designers are so good you could put a gun to their head and make them program today for a Sega Saturn and they'd still come up with something brilliant. All customized hardware does is maybe make things slightly easier for you, but it alienates most of the development community. Just not worth it.

I dont think Wii U will get a true price cut this year but I could def see some better value bundles.

Basic-keep heavily discounting just to get rid of them

Deluxe-$299

Deluxe w/Pikmin 3+extra Wiimote-$349

I asked Pezus this but I actually wanna ask everyone who's saying pricecut 2013. When do yal expect the price cut to happen?

We just got a Nintendo Direct today. I'd think if they were gonna price cut this month, it'd have been announced in that ND. Since it wasn't, I think it safe to assume August is out of the question. Having a price cut during November n December just wouldn't make sense since the holidays will boost sales anyway. So that leaves us with October and September. Quite a narrow window and October is still pretty close to the holidays. Plus Nintendo's last price cut was announced in July and took effect in August.

October 11th when Zelda: WW HD launches if not slightly before.

If they're not planning on cutting the price why are there so many aggressive promotions to clear 8GB stock? I mean it's $149.99 in some places in Canada, lol, Wal-Mart's are dumping them for a $100 off.

They are obviously trying to move those out because the 32GB is dropping to $299.99 and its imminent. Retailers have to get rid of their basic stock.

$299.99 this holiday, then $249.99 by next E3 IMO.

Also Nintendo did not announce the $80 price reduction on the 3DS through a Nintedo Direct. Nintendo Direct seems to be basically to share game information.

They needa make room for PS4/XO!

Wasn't it not until 2012 that Nintendo Direct became a big thing?

I can't say I really care for Nintendo to drop the price (I more or less want a Bayonetta 2 bundle with a black or blue Wii U to go with it).  But I'll reckon if Nintendo does feel the need to drop the price (Which they really do need to do) then it'll happen after the holidays since when they'd cut the price there'd be black friday sales so it'll be pointless to do during/before.

Plus there's already so many retailer cuts going on, especially in Europe from what I've heard. I wonder if a $50 cut would even match what some are selling them for. All the more reason for them to wait so they'll be in a better position to do a $100 drop!

Exaclty. All they can do right now is have value bundles. And since Wii-Remotes aren't that much to manufacture anymore, I guess you're right that they can bundle one or two in each console and still maintain a 349.99$ price tag.

A 50$ cut would match, but Nintendo wouldn't do that for the entire country. Selling at a loss yo!

so the Wii U is being sold at a loss but the PS4 will be sold at a profit???
what the hell

The console hardware itself is cheap but the cost of the tablet bumps it up quite alot.

I always said here the Gamepad cost over $150 for Nintendo... there is no way to sell the Wii U at $300 with profit with so expensive Gamepad.

BTW the Gamepad is not a game change IMO.

PS4 won't be sold at profit... it will be sold at no to little loss.

Horrible article. Wrong prices. Has been since decline that Reggie said one sell of software will lead to profit. Horrible fact checking by a horrible site in my opinion. Unprofessional.

Reggie backtracked on that btw.

He backtracked on a backtrack?
