Forums - Gaming - John Carmack (sort of) leaves id (but not really, but yeah) to work on Oculus Rift

Wow. He was pretty exited about his own VR headset project so I guess he's way into what Oculus is doing.

so thats it for id? they are doomed?!

Oh, you.

I don't know why he was at that company for so long, every time I watch his quakecon conferences I felt that he could do better and id software is holding him back

And with this, I am less excited over Doom 4. Feels like when Itagaki left Tecmo, sort of.

He's still going to work with id (in some capacity - look at the update) so there is hope yet!

I've heard of Oculus and frankly, I can't see how anyone with any sense would think a full on VR headset is the future.

3D television is more viable.

Are they owned by Microsoft?

Wow thats great news. ID sucked anyway lately. And his talent will really help VR becoming something awesome.

VR Headsets are WAY cooler than 3D TV. And they are a much better fit for games than 3D TVs, because they add more interactivity

But the problem with VR headsets is the complete immersion isn't it? If I have a VR headset on while it maybe more interactive it will also mean you can't see jack around you and are at a disadvantage if someone wants to take or do something to you or your stuff. Most people rather not cut off any of my senses just to enjoy a game, if it could be like Star Trek and such that is different but as bad as 3D glasses are, you don't have to worry about the problems a full VR headset creates.

I think Carmack just lost his way in the tech field. What he thought was going to be the new breakthrough technologies just didn't pan out.

Explained Bethesda to Eurogamer: "John will spend time working out of Oculus as part of his role with them, but he will also continue to work at id."

Bethesda added: "John has long been interested in the work at Oculus VR and wishes to spend time on that project. The technical leadership he provides for games in development at id Software is unaffected."

He hasn't left id... He just isn't full time anymore
