Forums - Gaming - Are rpg's dead?

RPGs are far from dead, if you want the WRPG then just stick to the Tv consoles but if you want the JRPGs then you will have to dig into handhelds, this is where the magic is formed and many JRPGs are born. The DS/PSP combo alone had enough offerings for all JRPG fans and it seems as though the tread will continue onto the 3DS and Vita. Sure as a JRPG fan i wish there were more on the TV consoles but as a big fan of handhelds i am getting my taste of the genre :D

In 2013 alone heres some great RPGs in general to get your hands on

Persona 5
Pokemon X/Y
Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD
Fairy Fencer F
Shin Megami Tensei IV
Disgaea Dimension 2
Tales of Xillia
Time and Eternity
Hyperdimension Neptunia
Shin Megami Tensei:Soul Hackers
Atelier Ayesha
Generation of Chaos
Etrian Odyssey IV
Pandora’s Tower
Dragon’s Crown
Ys: Memories of Celceta
Ni No Kuni

Come on now does this look like a dead genre?

Plus struggling genre means quality, from the ones who expect the least from. The next gen is going to be awesome.

Edit : Or should I say new gen ?

Lots of good JRPGS on handhelds, but when it comes to consoles the WRPG is king (Skyrim, Oblivion, Dragon Age, etc.) then again I own a 360/3DS and I haven't played a real good JRPG since Lost Odyssey

It's just that simple.

Western RPGs are doing fine; JRPGs, on the other hand, have become very much a niche product (outside of their home country of Japan, of course).

what? The golden time for the western produced RPGs were the 80s, they are in a two-decades-long decline. The situation is so bad, that they started to produce the games for console too, to make up for the lost sales on PC. That worked for Skyrim at least. But you don't have the immense number of games that were produced in the 80s.

Japanese produced RPGs are doing not too bad on handhelds. There is a lot of them. Not all comes to the west though.

I'm sorry, but....lol wut?  Is this a joke?  For a 3rd-party developer, releasing a game on multiple platforms is a sign of strength, not weakness.

It's also a sign that you can't obtain the sales you need by focusing on one platform, so you have divert time, resources, etc. in multiple platforms because you're unable to make money otherwise.

His statement really isn't along those lines though.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

I have a lot of RPGs from this gen. I probably own more then I bought from last gen.

I've never been into rpg's,but even i've noticed the lack of rpg's this gen. The only big ones I can think of are final fantasy and the fallout and skyrim type games. Sure there's the japan type rpg's,but I think they've become a very niche thing. The western rpg's seem to be somewhat more popular. I love fps and open world games, but it seems that's what the vast majority of games are these days. The only rpg type games I've gotten into were the kingdom heart games. Do you think there will be more rpg centric games next gen? are rpg games becoming a thing of the past? I'm not an expert when it comes to rpg's,but it just seems like there not nearly as popular as they used to be? I've been thinking about this for along time. Please, help me understand the decline of the rpg's.

The adventure games genre got assimilated by action, and went away.  What you are seeing now is RPG elements are being assimilated by other genres.  This coming generation, look for Open World to be the big thing, complete with RPG elements being assimilated,

Perhaps in some cases, but in other cases making a game for multiple platforms is due to a surplus of resources.  You started off making games for one platform, made a good amount of money, and decided to start releasing you games on other platforms in order to make even more money.
