ONE LAST TROLL POST

Quotes from the recent Iwata Asks: Super Smash Bros. Brawl interview with Sakurai, the game creator.

Sakurai: When people think of playing Smash Bros. online, they think about battling opponents to see what happens based on their record of wins or losses, or about holding tournaments online. But I felt that this would make it a service from which only a select group of players could derive enjoyment. For Smash Bros., there are small communities here and there where there’s fun in winning and losing, even when there are more skilled players than others. But if you make an environment where everyone is trying to climb their way to the top of a single tall mountain (see the clear "mountain" for MK Wii hehe ), it’s clear that the people having fun would be limited to a small number of individuals.

Iwata
Those in the top five might feel pretty good about themselves, but what happens if you’re number 15,398 in the rankings? People considered formidable in their own particular community wouldn’t be the least bit pleased.

Sakurai

Furthermore, since Smash Bros. is likely to have a broad gaming base, those that enjoy playing it within their own community might still end up number 100,000 in the rankings.

That is why Sakurai did not put leaderboards in his games...and I applaud him for it. I wouldn't really mind leaderboards...but the fact is, cheaters, lamers, and people that are better than you and play more than you will always be higher than you in the list, and it'll piss you off. And for casual gamers, they'll get really turned off.

It was Sakurai's and the Brawl team's decision not to have a leaderboard...it's apparent that the Mario Kart team decided they wanted one.

Also, if MKWii's leaderboard is a separate Wii channel...I find it slightly possible that a Brawl leaderboard could surface if the demand was great. (But it's not.)

There is one problem with your logic there ben..... Casual won't be the ones playing it online... Casuals buy it so they can play it with their friends.

Casuals have been the ones buying MK all these years. The online was to bring in the core gamers and core gamers seem to like the competition a leaderboard brings.

 A) Those are Sakurai quotes, it's not just my logic, it's the Smash Bros's maker's logic.

B)  I am a "core gamer."  I know exactly why leaderboards suck.  I would actually argue that the most hardcore gamers DON'T want leaderboards at all.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

The question is what will be the GOTY across all platforms?

Mariokart or Smash Brotha's

Ill go with Smash.

@kingofwale Dont hate.... congratulate.

:)

I am WEEzY. You can suck my Nintendo loving BALLS!

More GoTY material from Nintendo, Mario Kart and Smash Brothers in the same year no one would have guessed that one, but those are two of the longest lasting games by far.  I like the leaderboards thing but Ben has a huge point, it may be fun in the beginning when everyone is playing fair, but a year later it'll be nothing but cheaters at the top spots and people with too much time on their hands on the others, I mean Starcraft leaderboards got flooded with people with "perfect" records and got so bad no one even looked at them anymore, so maybe if they can block cheaters it will work otherwise it's just going to be an appeal for a short time.

Leaderboards in concept always seem like a good idea...but wait until early next year, and you'll see that you won't check them, nobody will because they'll be full of hackers and exploiters...and there's really no fun in trying to go from position 16432 to 13635...SSBB doesn't have a leaderboard because Sakurai just wants you to have fun, and I agree with it.

 Anyway, I still haven't been answered, you can play 4 players on one Wii vs. 4 players on another Wii vs. 4 players on another Wii...correct?

Finally a serious use of the Miis (To be honest I wanted the same feature for SSBB), and I hope is SplitScreen + WI-FI...

By me:

Made with Blender + LuxRender
"Since you can´t understand ... there is no point to taking you seriously."

@ben,

you mean 4 players in split screen then playing 8 other players via wifi....

I don't think so. From what it sounds like you have:

play solo on your wii vs cpu.
play solo on your wii vs 1-12 players wifi
play 1-4 on your wii.

This is ok, though the prospect of playing a few players in the room and a bunch of others via wifi would be really nice.

SSBB is bigger than Mario Kart atm.
