I don't think MS is just giving away random games. Most of the games seem to relate to games coming to the X1.

Fable 3- Fable Anniversary releasing/potential Fable 4 announcement@ Gamescom

Crackdown- Crackdown 3 most likely announcement@ Gamescom
DeadRising 2/Case Zero- Dead Rising 3 for X1

Only one without a connection is Defense Grid. 

Actually there is connection between Defence grid being in Free with gold-program: Defence Grid 2 has been announced!
