Forums - Microsoft - [CONFIRMED] Smartglass will function as a game controller and second screen.

Xbox One features Wi-Fi Direct, the ability for the Xbox One to act as an access point for Wi-Fi enabled devices, and partner with other Wi-Fi Direct devices.

Smartglass-enabled tablets and smartphones will be able to act as a controller for Xbox One with latent performace as good as an Xbox One wireless controller.  In terms of a Smartglass device as a second screen, this will largely depend on the device and the GPU performance for video compression/decompression.  However, higher end devices should be able to provide 20ms latency for remote gaming up to 600 ft away (Line of Sight) or 300 ft otherwise.

Also, if game developers add support for it, the Xbox One will support keyboard and mouse via Wi-Fi Direct.

That'll be a useful feature if you have a smartphone with buttons. Xperia Play sales will go through the roof!

Whoever wrote that must be smoking some good shit.

The remote gaming part sounds promising though. Having smartglass on your lap while playing with a controller doesn't seem to be too much of a hassle... Though I doubt that's what they have in mind.

Additionally, it makes the Wii U appear to be miles ahead of them.

It doesn't make sense, how can we control Game with touch buttons only. This is not useful unless the tablet/phone has controller like buttons.

GAMING is not about spending hours to pass/waste our time just for fun,

its a Feeling/Experience about a VIRTUAL WORLD we can never be in real, and realizing some of our dreams (also creating new ones).

So, Feel Emotions, Experience Adventure/Action, Challenge Game, Solve puzzles and Have fun.

PlayStation is about all-round "New experiences" using new IP's to provide great diversity for everyone.

Xbox is always about Online and Shooting.

Nintendo is always about Fun games and milking IP's.

So does that mean that I can play my Xbox One games off of my Surface Tablet with a Xbox controller?

So this is saying I can play Xbox One games on a tablet as a second screen?

Well, an FPS game wouldn't use that capability.

However, at the recent BUILD conference, Microsoft demonstrated how gamers could play Project Spark using a tablet through Smartglass.

Microsoft copying Nintendo (just like Sony and everyone else) confirmed!

All someone needs to do is develop (or make existing devices compatible) an attachment for phones and tablets for buttons and thumbsticks and MS would have all the functionality of Wii U and PS4/Vita as well as the additional features in Kinect and the other stuff.

Really shows MS has the best approach to offering the widest variety of experiences for their console, on top of an excellent gaming machine.

Microsoft has a patent for a "Controller" layout for a tablet or smartphone using touch.

Not all game types would use it.  An FPS, for example, wouldn't.  Not for playing the main game, for sure.  But puzzle games, certainly could allow for both the Xbox One wireless controller, Kinect, or Smartglass.
