Forums - Sony Discussion - PlayStation 4 gives up to 5.5GB of RAM to game developers

WiiU really uses 1gb ram for its OS only leaving a gb? They should have put 4gb in the WiiU. It would have made a massive difference and probably only added $25 to the cost of the system.

4.5 GB GDDR5 of ram for games? Honestly even this is too much considering it's GDDR5 and not DDR3. I don't think devs (specifically multi platform devs) would have taken advantage of the so called "7 GB ram for games" so it would have just been a waste. Better to put some more on the OS to make it super quick. 3.5 GB of GDDR5 for the OS this thing is gonna be lightning speed lol!

Oh btw so this is confirmed by Sony right? I just woke up not in the mood to read comments/articles lol

That's a terrible OS if it uses that much RAM. PS4 is starting to look less and less impressive to me now. And considering how it's all GDDR5 RAM (OS RAM will use it), it's a massive waste.

The other side of this is Microsoft is a software company that has been developing OSes since the 1980's.  Sony isn't.  With every console Sony is using a new OS to do something new.  There's no expertise built-up within Sony with their OS because it changes every time.

Because of Microsoft's experience and expertise, I think they're likely able to create a smaller, more efficient OS than Sony is.

You aren't seriously suggesting that Microsoft has a proven track record of stellar OS development, are you?  Sure, MS has been developing PC OSes since the 1980's, but by and large they have the dubious honor of producing the shittiest, most bug-ridden, performance and security challenged OSes in the history of computing.  DOS? Windows 3.1?, Windows ME?, Vista?  Really??  MacOS, Unix, and Linux have always been miles ahead of the Redmond Giant in when it comes to OS stability, security, performance, and functionality.

Let's not confuse "popular" with "high quality". MS OSes certainly win the popluarity contest but that doesn't mean much in terms of their quality. I'm sure "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" is quite popular too...

I stand by my statment.  You haven't actually addressed ANYTHING I've said.

No it's not confirmed by Sony yet.  They delayed the article because Sony wanted to make a comment on it.  If Sony did say the info is correct then they aren't showing it in the article.  They say nothing about any comment from Sony.  It's a rumor for now.

To anyone thinking 3.5GB guaranteed is a lot, remember a gaming PC has 4GB of /system/ RAM and likely 2-4GB of graphics RAM. This is 3.5/4.5 for both system and graphics.

So this is the BIG news? I thought it was going to be much worse.

Admittedly I was expecting to hear much worse news as well.  Even still, this isn't horrible news.  At best, the OS only uses 2.5GB.  At worst, it uses 3.5GB.

Memory availability wise, the median is that it's on par with the Xbox One at 5GB.  But this makes developing games for more than 4.5GB a danger.  I have this feeling the PS4 Camera is one area where that 1GB of memory may go.  Hence why Sony decided not to include the PS4 Camera with the console.

What the Hell Happened? Hopefully the fix that because this is complete crap.

EDIT

But wait, something seems off to me here. It was comfirmed that Sony was originally going to have 4 gigs of ram, until Pitchford said they would be screwed if they didn't do 8gigs. With the OS using 3.5gb, that would leave only .5 for devs. So, something seems weird here to me.

Edit two

For people who read this, and are about to cry because I accidentally sad Pachter, I'm sorry. I meant randy Pitchford from gearbox. I get the two name mixed up for some reason.

Agreed, but...the OS rarely is that graphically intensive.  You can do the OS screen in 512MB, if not 256MB.  That's still a lot that the OS system side is using.
