Yep.  I have been reading the last few pages on the latest thread on the topic.  Apparently, on there you have to prove you are an insider, otherwise you get banned.  Nice system, I have to admit. 

And I know about the video recording fail, but what's the 3rd?

If Amazon and Gamestop are anything to go by, then PS4 preorders are still quite healthy.  Mission failed, Leadbetter.  Better luck next time.

He already tweeted the article was false, so I'm guessing the numbers must be higher than what Leadbetter reported.  Of course, he's not going to give out specific numbers if Sony hasn't.  Apparently, insiders at Gaf have been alluding to 6GB, though.  Either way, it's still an improvement over the 3GB they originally had.

You need to read the whole thing, the DF article is not false because they get their info from the Sony documents.  What Brain is stating is that 1GB allocation.  In other words 4.5 dedicted for games then there is the 512 devs cn request, then the other 512 that is managed by the OS.

I'm going to trust someone who develops games over an article that does not reveal the actual sources and also already managed to get something wrong when they tried to explain how the flexible RAM works. Sony had to step in and correct them on that already. Basically, it was the opposite of what the article said. You also have several members of GAF who have provided very accurate information in the past saying that the console is actually allowing up to 6 gigs of RAM to be used and the other 2 gigs are for the OS.

Lets put it this way.  Sony had a chance to clarify everything and they did not.  The only clarified the 1GB flexibility memory part of the article.  Usually when a company goes into no comment mode, its probably because its nothing they can use as a advantage.  Its the same situation as MS not giving out specs for the X1 because they do not have an advantage in that area.

On Gaf, I have heard plenty and plenty of them have been wrong. So its 5, oh no its 6, in the end its not going to be what people though and just because some games are using 6 does not mean this is the norm or even how the end results will be.  We as gamers probably really do not need to know because it will not effect us at all

Personally I am only defending DF, I do not care how much memory Sony allocate for the OS and non gaming features.  I just want the console to be smooth in all the things it does.  When Sony come around and stop playing games and announce what else the PS4 can do, when we can see how memory will need to be allocated for when you are not playing a game.


Sony had a chance to clarify DRM among other questions people had and yet they waited all the way until E3 to do it. They made people wait for months to get a straight answer and when the heat REALLY turned up when it was revealed that Microsoft was doing such things Sony STILL made people wait a month before they told us what they were doing even as people were swearing up and down that Sony will be doing the same thing. Sony making no comment is not automatically a wink and nod. We've already seen that with previous questions they will answer when they're ready to. They are probably not 100% yet on how the RAM is being allocated and it's likely to do with finalizations involving the OS, assuming this rumor/report is false. 

When a developer says the rumor/report is false I'm going to take their word over an article that can't seem to nail down the facts. First it's 1 gig but then it's 512 megs of flexible RAM. Then they say the OS has priority over it but then they get corrected and it's the opposite. The three people on GAF who have made the claim that the split is 6/2 for games and then OS have had plenty of very accurate information in the past that no one who didn't have an inside source (or without being an inside source themselves) could have possibly known. They have, from time to time, been wrong about some things but hey things change or miscommunication happens. They have been accurate enough that when they speak, and especially when they back each other up on the information, it's pretty much taken as near certain it's the truth.

Digital Foundry may not necessarily be wrong as much as it could very well be that they have outdated information. How old are these documents? Did things change since then? We also have no clue who these sources are that fed DF this information. Again, I'll trust an actual developer and people who have a history of being amazingly accurate with information no one outside of Sony should have had when going up against a published article with unknown sources that can't seem to get the information right.

Well I am going to take the word that Richard read Sony docs on the case. The document says developers have a guaranteed 4.5GB.  This was not disputed by Sony or anybody else.  Anything after that was part of the flexible memory.  How that flexible memory is to be used really isn't that big of a deal because it was not part of the direct memory.   Developers can depend on only having 4.5GB at any given point in time, thats what guaranteed means.  After that, they can use addtional memory but I am sure those are based on scenerios if the memory is available.  ALso within the EG article Richard never said this stuff was written in stone but and could be changed by Sony as things mature on the system.  There is nothing fundametally false about the article and based on his sources he clarified the parts that needed more understanding.  If the document is outdated then why would Sony have developers with outdated documents about their system.  You say you trust developers but there is nothing to say that the same sources DF is using is more rep than Gaf.

Last but not least, you are basing your opinion on unknown sources against another person unknown sources.  Difference is that the person doing the article is not unknown and I am sure he trust his sources.  So yeah, I would put more stock on a person willing to put their face and name on the line then someone jumping into a forum, who no one has a clue who that person is or their agenda saying something is false or that some game somewhere is doing this or that when they cannot even name it.

But seriously, I wonder what they are doing with such a large OS? I doesn't have a Kinect running and voice sampling going all the time. So what could they be doing?

This isn't official so it's not confirmed that the OS uses 3.5 GB Ram. So what are you even talking about.
