Forums - Sony Discussion - PlayStation 4 gives up to 5.5GB of RAM to game developers

3GB for the OS?

I'm sorry but that's fucking insane. The Xbone has 3 operating systems and provides a seamless experience with apps and switching over, AND multitasking. The PS4 will use a variation of Linux and it looks way more simplistic than a fucking windows kernal.

What the fuck is eating up all this RAM? Wouldn't the 15 min recording stream to the hard drive? If not, then fuck that feature.

In hindsight Sony had never come clear about how much memory was reserved for the games and I now see why, they knew their fans would be disappointed.

I'm tired of these fucking console makers being discrete over the true specifications of the console. I feel like they're trying to trick their consumers, fuck that. To be honest the PS4 is starting to look less and less appealing to me. I might just stick to PC Gaming to be honest Sony is losing me as a fan.

The amount of ram used by a console's OS will probably be reduced as the console ages; whatever the numbers might be now, are subject to change in the future. The Xbox One probably won't need the 3gb or ram in a year or 2. But Sony on the other hand had a problem this gen with not having enough ram for their OS and it suffered because of it. No game is going to need more than 4 gigs of ram for quite a while, so in the meantime Sony is probably looking to future proof their console.

I still don't get why having the same amount of ram available to developers as the xbox one makes the console any less attractive, but more of that ram will become available to developers if they need it in the future. And Sony still has yet to comfirm how much ram is actually being used for the OS; 3.5 is still uncomfirmed.

OF course the whole conversation that i had with him wasn't quoted.  In it i clearly indicated that i could have been wrong but thought that i remembered it that way.  I have taken the time to look at a number of his posts and i am pretty sure if you would read a large # of his posts it is quite clear that he is a Sony guy.  All i had originally said was that i found it funny that he commented now that it was OK that the ram was lower. I was utilizing his comment to say that most of the fanboys for either side seem to change their minds that with every little bit of info that comes out to go along with whatever system they think is the best.

Well yeah the whole conversation wasn't quoted, and that's pretty reasonable if you ask me.

"Your initial response is funny, seeing as you blatently talk BS about how the PS4 was so much better than the XBone in your many posts in other threads.  But when it is reported that the PS4 has less available ram than the XBone, it is now not needed and will make the system even faster"  Is the initial post that I take issue with, followed by "So your response is "prove it"".

I'd argue that asking you to prove something that you specifically stated is totally legitimate.  It wasn't about proving that he's a Sony fan, I'm sure he knows that, it's about proving the claims you made about posts he's made in the past.  Your general point is legitimate, but if you're going to call someone out you need to bring something more than "that's how I remember it" and you shouldn't be shocked when they tell you to prove your claim.

I was about to writing a post saying that i don't understand why gamers are so obsessed with how companies have to do exactly what they want, and if they don't, be angrily pissed and moaning like a child. Me as a consumer, only i have to consider if i like the console and the games they try to sell me when the product is in the shop. The way that company accomplish that, is their problem. I don't need to know every specific of what are they doing everytime, and if they don't tell me, i don't consider they are trying to trick me at all. Intefering and critizising without knowing every aspect of the developement of a product sounds childish....

There is a guys that said in GAF the all these info are wrong.

"Don't worry. This article is all wrong."
"It'll never be since its completly untrue."
"Yeah,absolutly. Real numbers and all.
Quite somme panic in there.Thread is too fast for a fake non news."

This guy was confronted by the Mods to give credentials...

In GAF when that happen if the guy is telling truth nothing happen but if he can't show credentials he is banned.

It is been a day already and the guy not got banned

Edit - GAF mod words "Yes, we talked privately already. Take from that what you will."

So I guess the numbers in DF article are all wrong... another Leadbetter Sony personal rumor attack?

I'm not angry that it's only 5, I'm angry because Sony could've told us instead of us finding out through a DF article, especially when you consider the lot of the internet expected the PS4 to have 6-7 gigs available. It just seems sneaky to me....

Like how Microsoft spouted the cloud BS to raise people's expectations. Sony decided to be vague about arguably their second biggest advantage. And now that that's debunked I feel like they were trying to trick consumers. Maybe it's just me but I'd appreciate it if these console makers would be upfront about all their specifications instead of boosting them up to build hype that ultimately turns out to be BS.

Cripes, a lot of hot air over nothing. Developers themselves are happy with the RAM amount they get to play with so why should you, the end user, care when games look great and perform well? 5GB RAM is more than enough for devs getting to grips with the new hardware. Futhermore, in the future, more RAM will be made available through optimization. Its not like those 3GB of GDDR5 suddenly disappears into thin air >_<

Anyway, no other company has gone into detail about RAM allocations because it makes zero difference to people outside of development teams. Its better than not giving much detail on the console at all ~ Wii U, Xbox One.

I don't think he likes to risk his job to upset sony-fans all over the world. Such things are obviously checked easily if wrong or right. You can't just say anything and get away with it, especially if it's data that can be checked.

Literally nothing's been comfirmed yet. Sony's comment was -

We have no comment to make on the amount of memory reserved by the system or what it is used for.

Silence doesn't always mean negative news and Sony's policy has always been "we don't comment on rumors or speculation". The 7gb available for developers, as far as I know was an uncomfirmed rumor people attached themselves to -  Sony didn't trick people into believing anything.

Sony was also quiet about their DRM policies and look at how that turned out.

And people should learn by now to not trust every rumor until something's been comfirmed.

What are you talking about. All we heard was that the Xbox One is a media box, tv, tv, tv, etc. You can't deny all those comments. They are totally separate from the DRM fiasco and were only said by PS4 fans. Now I guess this makes the PS4 a media box right? If not then a lot of people on here should apologize, but of course they wont. This is seen as a good thing all of a sudden because it is Sony.

What are YOU talking about? "real" xbox fans were the only ones liking the whole tv, sports crap. All the hardcore gamers was bashing the Xbone from left to right. didn't matter if it was the Sony fans or not.

Who the hell cares if it were Sony or MS fans?
The fact remains that MS got a pretty bad response after they were honest and tell everyone that 5GB are for gaming.

Sony is doing the same now and their "light OS" is actually heavier than Windows. Sony will use 3.5 GB for multimedia stuff as well.
They just refused to talk about this.

My prediction that the technical gap between both consoles will be smaller than ever is coming true.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

So what I understand from Sony comments it that all the flexible memory is reserved for Games too.

How many memory is used by OS, Games and flexible is yet unknown.

The fact is the OS is still Beta/Alpha... there are a lot of optmizations to be made yet and even Sony didn't know how much memory the final version it will use.

That's what I guess.

That is what I said. Sony plays safe, like MS, to further optimize their OSs. And Sony has a way harder task because they have to develop a lot of more things on their own where MS has already software for it.

5g is still enough for games nowadays.

@Bold:  I would really love for people to understand that this is correct. At least for 4-5 years.  People like pointing fingers from all sides and it's fucking annoying. Who cares.  I also wish some people would step up and be the better person and just let shit go.  Yes, let's get angry over a freaking games console.

Nobody is saying 5GB isnt enough. Its is plenty, there is no problem with 5GB.

....aside from a few sony fans in the 360 thread where the 5GB was concerned of course.... then it was bad and a limiting factor affecting multiplats and thus bad for the whole world of gaming.

Well, it was the usual suspects who did so. There were also others that said it's still enough, IIRC.
