Pity we dont have a time machine to know if this will ever increase like it did on PS3.

Or is it all used on the systems 15mins of constant recording and instant off on hibernate features.

15 mins at 1080P eats up a lot of space, but then the PS4 should be streaming that to the HDD.  The Hibernate feature is something that could also be streamed to the HDD or kept in memory or a combination of both.

What I think is that Sony has a lot of non gaming features they have not talke about yet.  All the features the PS4 will do for games and non games will need just as much memory as the X1.  The difference is that MS hard coded this value at the start and Sony is trying to figure out what they need once things get settled.  I am sure Sony does not want a situation where they do not have enough memory to do something like cross game chat which ended up being a feature the 360 coudl do but the PS3 could not due to memory.

Someone pointed out that constantly sending video information to the HDD would just force so much spin time that it wouldn't be healthy for the system. That takes power, generates heat, and causes wear-n-tear.

Very true.  An HDD only have a fix lifespan before wear and tear will cause it to fail.  If the PS4 is constanly sending 15 mins of video of your gameplay it would cause the lifespan of the HDD to go down significantly.  I thougth I read that 1 min of 1080P video using h.264 takes up 178mb. So a little over 2GB closer to 3.

And what is this RAM being used for in the OS? In 3-5 years 4.5gb-5.5gb ram will be very small. Really they should have went with 6-7gb ram to at least try to keep up with the times. If Xbox One goes with 12gb ram then they could have 8-9gb ram and definitely be pretty viable for years to come.

As myself and others around the internet have pointed out, we've been getting games like Grand Theft Auto 4, Halo 4, and The Last of Us on machines that only have half a gig of RAM in total. The truth is, 7 gigs of RAM for gaming was overkill depending on who you asked. People often try to make point-for-point comparisons between PCs and consoles and it just doesn't work because consoles are highly customized and built from the ground up to run games. So when PC games are recommending 4 gigs of RAM people are getting the wrong idea thinking that the same requirements would be made of consoles. A lot of fanboys were running their mouths about 7 gigs of RAM for gaming without really realizing that not only would that amount make little to no difference against the Xbox One but that by the time it did, the generation would pretty much be over and it wouldn't matter anymore. I was honestly surprised Sony was devoting that much to games but I just let it go because I figured they knew something I didn't. The more I thought about it though the more I came to wonder why it seemed like Sony was devoting such a tremendous amount of fast RAM to games. It was like they were trying to highly future proof the system while forgetting that both consoles would already be hitting bottlenecks thanks to their GPUs and CPUs long before even having just 5 gigs of RAM for games became an issue. If they were that kind of serious about future proofing they should have also gone for better overall specs than they have.

As far as the rumor about Xbox One going for more RAM, I can tell you with confidence to forget about it. It really wouldn't be in Microsoft's best interest to delay production just to change everything up so they can jam a ton more RAM into the console. It would be the same problem. It would be WAY too much RAM that wouldn't make any sense at all because developers would get nowhere near using that much RAM before it was time for the new generation. It really would be an incredible waste of time, money, and resources. If Microsoft was going to make any kind of change to the specs it would be more likely that they'd go for a more powerful GPU or CPU. Even that's not going to happen at this point. Such changes would be way too drastic and Microsoft would probably have to delay the console until late next year. Seeing as how many indications have them being behind already, that would be a very bad move.

I agree with what you say but I actually think it would benefit MS if they increase more ram.  The reason is that MS already started off knowing they were going to do mroe than just play games.  With 3 different OS, MS could allocate more memory to each one thus allowing them to do more on the App end.  I believe MS system will be very hungry for memory because MS is setting this system up to do much more things.  Increase to 16GB I believe would not be a solution to increase more memory for games but to increase more memory for all the other stuff this device will do.

Truth is, the 3 gigs that Microsoft is setting aside for its operating systems is already a very large memory footprint. If at any point in time they would find themselves needing more than that, I'd say they have either done something very wrong or they are trying to now jam a ton of pointless garbage into it. The Xbox 360 dashboard used very little memory, I want to say maybe 50 megs, and I'd say it was highly functional. I'm willing to bet that Microsoft has already considered future endeavors and they aren't even using all 3 gigs.

Maybe I am little bit to hardcore. But in all honesty I would have preferred all the specs to be improved especially RAM, processor speed, and HD. I find 500 GB HD a little bit to small when you consider the size of the games will only increase and with services like PS plus taking so much space. Only reason I prefer more RAM then 8gb is because looking at it right now 512mb of ram is just plain to small. I have a computer with 8gb of ram and it has been plenty for anything I have wanted and probably will still be good for years but I will probably upgrade in the next 3 years.

What the hell does an OS need 3.5 GB for?

Lot's of porn multi-tasking.

4K porn. ;)

with an option of having it in 3D

My beautiful post turned into "wall". Sadness.

Seriously though, I get you. It's always nice to know that what you have under the hood will keep you going for a long time. Personally, I keep my PC updated as much as I find it necessary to get the best out of it. I buy consoles for the games I can't get on PC. I'll admit, I'm a junkie for visuals. They don't have to be photorealistic but boy do I still want them to shine. Ultimately, this is all going to end up being the same thing that happened last generation. For the first few years people will argue about whose is better and then only the most disturbed people will keep at it while everyone else just enjoys their games. No one will really give a damn who had more RAM or a better GPU or how many USB slots there were when most people only used one of them. It'll be good times. :]

I have to say, I total agree with what you are saying.  I know once I bought my Wii, PS3 and 360, I could care less who had the best specs, more ram, you name it.  I only cared about the games and enjoyed all of the systems for what they brought to the market.  It will be the same this gen.  Once the consoles get to market and the games start to come out, people who only care about games will leave these discussion and go to ones that talk about games while the fanboys will continue to load and reload their fanboy guns shooting at each other for any possible advantage their console of choice gains.

I've enjoyed reading this thread.

It's been fun to see all the Master Chiefs at the beginning trying to lol at 4.5 - 5.5 GB... even though the 4.5 GB still beats Microsofts 5 GB. Then seeing the lols turn right back to the go to move of "Microsoft and it's fans are so mistreated" has made me smile

Cheer up though Chief, you still have The Cloud : )
