Forums - Sony Discussion - PlayStation 4 gives up to 5.5GB of RAM to game developers

Here's what I'm gonna do. I'm not gonna care at all if this is true(disappointing but whatever) and get my ps4 and fucking love it and play games. Then a year later I'm gonna get the X1 and enjoy the fuck out of it and it's games.

Don't we need RAM for Sleep in PC's to do quick supsend/resume? That's the reason Sony do it, becauase they have one second resume from games suspended by turning off PS4 as well which is done storing everthing in RAM and resuming it back when we turn it on like Sleep in PC.

But that matain the full state of the RAM... all 8GB will be the same when the system go back... it is like Stand By feature on PC and not Suspend (suspend saves the RAM into HDD and shotdown everything... then resume copy from HDD to RAM but the process is way slow compared to Stand By).

Yes, You're right I was confused a little. And also Sony tries a new mode which does powering off everyting except RAM, HDD and secondary chip(controlled by this) for quick resume/updates.

GAMING is not about spending hours to pass/waste our time just for fun,

its a Feeling/Experience about a VIRTUAL WORLD we can never be in real, and realizing some of our dreams (also creating new ones).

So, Feel Emotions, Experience Adventure/Action, Challenge Game, Solve puzzles and Have fun.

PlayStation is about all-round "New experiences" using new IP's to provide great diversity for everyone.

Xbox is always about Online and Shooting.

Nintendo is always about Fun games and milking IP's.

Why dissappointment? Sony did not say that we're reserving upto 3.5GB of RAM for OS, but they were just stating them to use only upto 5.5GB since their OS and everything else isn't matured(that article also mentioned this) yet so they are playing it safe since no game needs 7GB RAM right now so they can give access to up to 7GB later after year or two when everything gets matured in OS/Gaikai/Apps etc., Unlike Microsoft they must need 3GB Ram for three OS's and TV stuff which is not possible to release in future.

Oh I know and I understand the amount can/will likely be reduced.  If some of the gaf insiders are correct then the ps4 OS is as of now using 1.5GB and they are reserving an extra 1GB for other features if necessary. Then there is another 1GB reserved for devs if they need it for games.  So devs have access to 5.5GB if they need it.  That's is perfectly fine for games for the next 4-5 years easily and then sony will reduce the OS footprint if devs need more.  Plus since 7GB was never confirmed I guess it can't be disappointing because it's still loads more than current gen.  So diappointing is probably not the right word.

Is there any actual confirmation from Sony?

Good news, 8GB was too much, developers would have gotten lazy and release unoptimized games

Bill O'Reilly is unamused by your spin.

Its best if developers have less limitations. Especially the lazy ones!

Oh and since devs don't find the RAM allocation bad then I don't know why us as consumers should give a fuck either. But you gotta love over-reactions from all sides. :-p

I'm more excited about this OS than the gamez.
