Hi guys,

I'm looking to buy a PSP since I fell in love with handheld gaming with my Vita (don't worry, I'll be getting a 3DS somewhere down the line too).

Right now, I'll be using it for three things: Playing UMD games which aren't on PSN; playing PSP games on PSN which aren't compatible with Vita; and playing PS1 classics which aren't compatible with Vita (yes, ideally all these issues would be much more easily resolved if Sony pushed devs to put their games on PSN and make them Vita-compatible, but alas).

So I was looking around the UK high street and there are 4 PSP models available:

PSP 1000 ~ £40 used.  I'm not particularly interested in this one, since I heard 2000 & 3000 improve pretty much every feature of it

PSP 2000 ~ £40 used.  I don't really know enough about this model.

PSP 3000 ~ £50 used.  I don't really know enough about this model.

PSP E1000 ~ £70 new.  Can be bought brand new rather than used (which is a big plus for me) but comes without wi-fi which is a major negative for me.  I think the battery isn't replacable either.

Basically, I'm looking for advice about choosing between the 2000 & 3000 models.  Which has the better screen?  Which has the better battery life?  Does one have a better analogue nub than the other?  Does one run UMD's faster or quieter than the other?  Which do you own and are you satisfied with it?

I'm relegated to the fact that it's probably going to be one of those two, even though I am a console snob and would have preferred to have bought new, I can't justify the price of a new 2000/3000 model and the E1000 without wi-fi is a major bummer, even though I can still play PS1 & PSP games on it like I intended - it just involves PS3 transfer.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

P.S. I'm not looking to turn it into a portable emulator at this point, so that's not a concern of mine right now.

3000.

/thread.

I guess you probably want more information about the PSP 2000 vs 3000, huh? I'll have to refer you tp Wikipedia. Look up PSP and then buy the 3000. It's awesome. I noticed no screen tearing, either.

PSP 2000 is easier to errr...customise.

It also introduced the TV output I believe.

I've read a number of articles about it here and there.  Most of them refer to technical specs which mean nothing to me (same with Wikipedia to be honest).  What about 3000 makes it vastly superior, in your opinion?

2000. 3000 has screen issues.

I thought the last option of the poll was for PSP Go lol.

If you can mod, then PSP Go is the ABSOLUTE BEST console EVER created! Period! (even though I ended it with an 'exclamation mark'

It was indeed for the PSP Go (I thought I should include it), but it's not the console for me as I want something capable of playing UMD's :)

I only suggested it if you can mod it (which I highly suggest you do), but if you need to play UMDs then I'd definitely go for the PSP-3000

Greatly exaggarated screen issues compared to the simply horrible ghosting on the 2000, plus the 3000 has far, far, better color. I've had both, using my 3000 as we speak.

To answer your questions:

The better screen is on the 3000. Less ghosting, better color. Con is that you sometimes see visible scanlines, to which you get used quickly.

The longer battery life is on the 2000, thanks to a worse screen.

Analog nub is the same.

UMD's run the same.

The E1000 has a screen that has colors like the 2000, but it doesn't ghost like crazy like the 2000. If you want new - it ain't bad. Cons are that the battery is not replaceable, and the battery sensor is imprecise, giving you measures only in battery bars rather than in percentages and estimate of how much longer it can run. Mono sound unless you go for headphones, no physical brightness button - you gotta change in XMB, which can't be done ingame.

My suggestion is that you get the 3000, and get LCFW on it. That is, custom firmware side-by-side with sony's firmware. It is executed, and once you turn your PSP off, you are back to sony's firmware. It gives you the advantages of:

1) You can rip your UMD to PC and play it from memory card - faster loading in games, longer battery life from lack of a need to run the UMD drive.

2) You can play any PS1 game you have in your actual library. Rip to PC, convert for PSP, play.

3) You can get plugins that increase your battery life. Though that involves a little bit of work with the CFW.

That seems to cover it. Feel free to ask me anything, I've been messing with PSP's for two years now, since it's my go-to device for many things atm.
