Forums - Sony - Contrast Dev On PS4′s 8 GB GDDR5 RAM: “Still Scratching Our Heads As To What To Do With It All”

That is the thing, you really don't need it all. These companies are going all out and they are wasting time and resources to do so. Yeah you may be powerful but power comes at a cost. Well, you can't complain as a developer I guess. But games always seem cooler when you have to work around limitations and restrictions. It shows what a company is truly made of. I hate complainers though.

not sure if u noticed but both consoles have games with no loading. the amount of ram allows that to happen. not saying it's necessary...but doing away with loading is a pretty big deal

So much memory will make developers lazy. Just look at that Indy game that uses 5 GB of RAM already.

Having a large resource ceiling does not make for lazy developers. It will make them realize that they can do a lot more than what they could with a console that has a very limited amount of it and developers will want to use that to realize their vision for a game. They can actually make their games a lot more complex. Last time I checked, complexity is rarely the result of laziness. There were a great deal of what many people would consider to be lazy games on the Wii, a very low spec platform for its time.

Specs =/= creativity - and the lazy games weren't lazy cause of the specs, they were lazy cause they wanted to make quick profit out of the motion controls.

Specs =/= lack of creativity. My point about the Wii is that despite the low specs developers still got lazy on that platform.

Yes, there are lazy dev's on every console. But a lack of specs doesn't hinder you at all in game developing, it motivates you to work around certain problems and while doing it maybe even giving you new ideas. Like in real life. If everything works perfectly everytime you will never look into how to change things.

I'm pretty sure the guys working on Star Citizen would disagree with you considering the specs they need to make that game happen and it is certainly an ambitious game. Lack of specs can stifle your vision and force you to leave out what would have been awesome features or functions in the game. That doesn't mean the game is better because of it. That's an excuse often made by those who support a platform that is on the low end of hardware. Great games can be made both ways. These developers will also hit those ceilings at some point anyways. Then will you still make the excuse that these guys have been given too much to work with? Why did Nintendo bother to create a new console with greater specs than the Wii? Should they not have just aimed to continue to make these creative games on an aging console? Because surely increasing the specs will just lead to them becoming lazy.

Where did I say that nobody will use the RAM on PS4? I just said that the specs from the Wii are no excuse for not making a good game.

You complained that having all of these resources will make developers lazy because they won't have to figure out how to squeeze things in or approach things differently. The point myself and a couple others were making by pointing out that sooner or later they would tap it all is that eventually they will find themselves in such a position even with that many resources to work with. So complaining about them not maxing out and having to find clever work arounds for the time being is really just complaining for the sake of complaining. Because even with the ceiling being given to them on the PS4 and XOne, at some point in the future it's not going to be enough for what they need. Just like the Wii U is already for many developers.

As for the Wii, it all just seems to be going over your head. You complained that an abundance of system resources will cause developers to be lazy. So I pointed to a system that seriously lacks system resources even during its prime and that obviously some developers were lazy on that platform as well. It apparently did not take a lot of system resources for developers to decide they didn't want to try. Point being that with an abundance of resources or a lack of them, it doesn't matter. A lazy developer will be a lazy developer.

Unlogoical response. I said not optimising the game for the system is lazy. The Witness dev was even proud that he had to use 5 GIG's. If he would use the RAM properly he could squeeze out more of it.

And if you don't know what I mean. Hardware difficulties were reason for a lot of the greatest games. Cause dev's needed a way to work around it. Now they can put it on the system and it runs.

And the other problem is that the RAM is totally useless if it so high when nobody optimises it correctly besides 1st Party.

First of all, that wasn't your original complaint. Second of all, how do you know it won't be optimized? You must be from the future. The Witness creator? Well he's a game developer and I'm willing to bet you're not. He knows what he used the RAM for. Do you? Besides, pointing out one indie developer as proof positive that your claim is correct is absurd. You're grasping at straws.

Yeah and having plenty of resources to make the game someone wanted was the cause for a lot of great games as well. We can go round and round with this all day if you'd like. If you still think resources should be limited then tell Nintendo they shouldn't have made the Wii and should have stuck with the Gamecube and just figured out how to make their games competitive with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

OH NO! THE RAM MIGHT NOT BE FULLY OPTIMIZED AT YEAR 1 OR EVEN YEAR 2! THAT TOTALLY MEANS GAMES ON THE PLAYSTATION 4 AND XBOX ONE ARE GOING TO BE BAD AND LAZY GAMES! IT'S OVER! IT'S FREAKING OVER, MAN! EVERYONE JUST GO BUY A WII U!

you make MOAR GRAPHICZ

First of all, I never talked about the whole specs, I talked about the RAM. Second, Witness is 100 % unoptimised. No pc game ever needed to use 5 gb of GDDR 5 RAM. It's just expensive and useless to put so much RAM into a console only because dev's are too lazy too optimise the game. Never meant it WILL be the case, I said it could be the case if the majority of third parties think it's okay.

PCs use both the GDDR5 RAM found on the graphics card and the DDR3 general system RAM. In this case, the RAM in the PS4 and XOne are being used for both general system RAM and gaming RAM. The XOne really only has 5 gigs available for gaming and the PS4 has 7 gigs available for gaming. Regardless, having that much elbow room means that issues that normally pop up from lack of RAM will not be an issue at all and the systems are largely future-proofed where RAM is concerned. Did you ever consider that maybe, just maybe, the process of having to optimize slows down development too? You say it's lazy if they don't have to optimize. Why? If it's not necessary for them to optimize that's more time they could be spending working on something else with the game. Who gives a rat's ass if Johnathan Blow used 5 gigs of RAM for his game? If it allowed him to actually make the game the way he wanted instead of having to cut corners and spend time trimming things up then that's great for him, other developers, and even the consumers who get to enjoy his vision in all the glory he wanted it to be in. You're really making a big deal out of something that isn't a big deal now and it won't matter at all 5 years from now.
