Forums - Sony - My The Last of Us impression (WARNING: possible spoilers!)

Finally got to play this game and I'm going to summerize in pros and cons

Pros:

- Graphics are phenomenal
- Amazing voice acting and well-written dialogue. You are convinced of each character's motivations.
- Combat mechanics are very well done; the cinematic punching/kicking will become a staple feature for these games just as running is in FPS since BF2.
- Good RPG element to creating weapons and leveling up skills.
- Create atmosphere. Especially in the dark places with the clickers.
- I love the story and am very keen on knowing what happens next.
-Great weapon variety. Except I haven't found any use for the bow yet.

Cons:

- Your ally NPC AI is not smart. They run/crouch in front of the enemies thinking they are sneaking
- The enemy AI is a hit and miss too. My ally crouches in front of them and they most of the time ignore them. So the enemy's field of vision is not polished.
- Cannot pick up fallen enemy's weapons/gear. I know they had to balance to make it a survival game so you don't get your hands on overpowered weapons, but the realism needs to be there.
- Cannot pick up or drag enemies to hide them from plain site. Once someone sees them your stealth operation is in jeopardy
- Nearby Enemies can't hear the noise of strangling? And the stranglee doesn't attempt to call for help
- Game is a bit too linear. For a zombie apocalypse, gotta go open world(hoping that Last of Us 2 will be so). You should be able to backtrack. Although it's not as constrained as Max Payne 3.
- I'm 41% through exploring every area thoroughly and yet I don't have much upgraded. Not sure if this is a con or by design that you shouldn't have everything upgraded by the end.
- Useless skill upgrades: crafting faster, healing faster, weapon sway. The first two you do when things are calm anyway. The third, if you're used to play high sensitivity FPS like me, you won't need this.
- When a click is around and I'm trying to crouch around, Ellie talks so loud yet clicker doesn't hear.
- Joel's hearing skill is a good thing, but I think it should enhance the audio volume concentrating on their grunts instead of revealing where they are. Let the player use his auditory skills to determine the location/distance of the enemies.

All in all, so far I'd give this game an 8/10. It's a really good game and recommend it to anyone who has a ps3.

Everyone's a critic, i suppose. I think some of your complaints seem a little ridiculous.

For example???

Just a tip: A fully-taut arrow will take most enemies out completely silently ;)

Also, you aren't meant to get fully powered up in one playthrough. I beat it on New Game Plus and still am missing a few things

Glad you like the game.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

8/10 score is an insult for this game. but hey whatever.

your first two points as well as another contradict each other

Yeah those arrows are amazing. Love the sound effects too.

No they don't. Infact they corroborate each other.

When Ellie hides right in plain sight of the enemy, it does kind of take away some of the realism. However if instead she ended up blowing our cover, that would only be frustrating, since we don't have control of where she takes cover. It keeps the game from becoming pointlessly frustrating. Same thing when Ellie talks loudly. I don't have any control over that, so it would only be frustrating. Same with the strangling. Some of the crafting skills you may not use, but I'd rather have them available than not. People may play differently than you. If I'm in a tight spot and I forgot to make a med kit or I have one and I need to use it fast, it would be beneficial to be able to do it quickly.

So most of the issues are down to the tweak that they did to stop your ally AI from alerting the enemy. This is just to balance the game, you have to make a few sacrifices from the believability to make a game which is more fun to play

Linear... so? The actual combat is very open

Hearing mode is much better than enhancing the volume, that relies on people having surround sound, which isn't fair on many.
