Out of the Rockstar games I've played GTA is my least favorite. It's also my least favorite open world series overall. I think the series is way overhyped. I let myself get caught up in the hype for GTA V and it ultimately disappointed me. GTA IV was even more disappointing than GTA V imo. I get the feeling that I'll like Just Cause 3 more than GTA as well. |
GTAIV simply wasn't a very good game
That game's ratings are possibly the most outrageous critical response I've ever seen in gaming
All rockstar games receive high meta for that reason, money is a beautiful thing after all.
Naughty dog and from software are the same.

Yeah, the fact that GTA IV was the highest rated game of the 7th generation was pure silliness. Were critics even playing the same game I played? It was an 8.5/10 game at most (and even that is generous imo). I wonder how much of GTA IV's record breaking (at the time) budget went to buying off critics, lol? |
You're a more generous man than I lol
It went backwards from the last game in world size, activities, customisability, went for a serious story despite being filled to the brim with ridiculously unbelievable characters, the main character was a whiny repentant little bitch in pretty much every cut scene and then you had to run around and shoot up the town whenever you played (cus u know....it's GTA), the story was stretched out with one pointless mission after another......I could go on but you get the point.
It was honestly a bit of a joke

Well, not all Rockstar games, Bully had an 87 meta, Max Payne 3 had an 87 meta, Red Dead Revolver had a 77 meta, the Midnight Club series was pretty consistent in the low to mid 80's range. But all of Rockstar's high budget games have meta'd 90 or higher. I feel like Red Dead Redemption and LA Noire were deserving of their high scores, GTA not so much. I've never played a Naughty Dog or From Software game, so I can't really comment on rather or not those games are deserving of their high scores. |
The ones with the most financial backing I meant.

I love Naughty Dog games and think they are some of the best of the last gen (little bit less cinematic and I would like them even more). I also love From Software games and would give the Souls games (also Bloodborne) not worse scores as they got on Metacritic.
So yeah, I think about the games from them the same as reviewers and nobody paid me for it (if you implied this with your post). Naughty Dog games would get maybe a few points less from me on average but only a few and only because I like it less cinematic as some other people do.
Cinematic shooters, with mediocre shooting mechanics can never be worth 100/100.
