Some Tales members on working on Smash Bros, doesn't mean they're neglecting Tales though. Xillia in 2011 was the last time they made an "original" Tales game for consoles. Xillia 2 rehashed areas and such from Xillia 1. They should have plenty of time to get a brand new one next year.
A Tales game a year isn't anything special...we have CoD or AC releasing every year, it's not really a big deal. Games like Persona 4 sold well late on the PS2 and RPGs have more dedicated fanbases so it should be OK.
I'm sure they think part of their fanbase is on the 3DS but Baba has said multiple times now (and recently) that they're main focus is on the PS3.

That is true, Persona 4 released about 2 years after PS2 was replaced in Japan. Tales of Zesty Cheese would release in Japan only a year after PS3 was replaced.
I dunno, I just find it shocking that there would be 5 Tales of Games in 4 years (f, Xillia 1 & 2, Symphonia remakes, and this). I think for the American gamer this might be a bit saturated. I mean, I consider myself a JRPG fan, but I still haven't beaten Vesperia (plan to beat it real soon). By the time I buy and beat Graces f and Xillia, Symphonia remake and Xillia 2 will release. I don't want to be only playing Tales of games, I like a break now and then.
Regardless...PS3 or 3DS, I'm still happy. I hope it's 3DS though, I seem to beat more JRPG's on handhelds since my job invoves me sitting around a lot.

Did they say they want ALL future Tales on Playstation platforms? Namco Bandai has been very jumpy with their Tales of Releases. While they do clearly prefer Sony, they do support Nintendo.

For the near future that is exactly the case.
I guess you havent been keeping up with the last years of the tales studio's situation. The studio was in dire financial trouble after Vesperia failed to perform on the 360 and Graces failed to perform on the Wii as they antecipated besides a plethora of bug issues. Before that the DS tales all failed aswell. The studio was about to bankrupt and was absorbed back into namco, but not without first revealing their last title of sorts. That title was Xillia and was released for the PS3, it was the studio's final hurrah to keep the tales series relevant (it had been in decline). also the vesperia and Graces PS3 ports sent a clear message aswell, selling more than the original versions.
Xillia was a sucess and revived the series from the problem it was in. The tales studio realised that their fan base is on the playstation 3 and sent them a clear message.
Now add those events to the clear statements that Hideo Baba has given us, and its easy to understand that they team will not take the risks that almost sent them packing at the beggining of this gen. They will stick to the PS3 for now and make as much money as possible. They wont move to the PS4 until the console has seen significant sales.

Maybe, but Abyss for 3DS was also not a failure...yea, you might be right though, Tales of Hearts and Innocence sold poorly. To be fair Tempest is the worst rated Tales of game though.
However aren't Tales of Hearts and Innocence 2D Tales games? The 3D ones sell better, and Abyss remake did do well.
You might be right though, but wow. in 2009 the only Tales games were Wii and 360, and now PS3 might have 5...
