DVDFab plus Handbrake is a great free solution. Removes copy protection and then rips to h264 mp4 or mkv files. I just finished backing up all my dvds with this method.

that actually looks pretty much what i need.  about how long per disc on average to get to an .mp4?

Handbrake is what I use to convert movies to MP4 so that I can watch them on my ipod. It usually takes the length of the movie to convert it, or at least it does for me. For instance if a movie is an hour 30 minutes, then it will take an hour 30 minutes to convert, give or take a couple of minutes. Handbrake is a great program. Simple to use and it's free!

O.o

that long?  is winx faster?  i'll pay the $50 to convert things faster.  i've got like 1000 hours of movies.

No idea what programs are faster than this. I personally don't mind waiting for it to convert since I usually just do like 2-3 movies a week but since you're going to be doing so many I can understand why the wait would be annoying.

Anything that removes copy protection is illegal though. If you are ok doing that you might as well download digital versions, as they will be optimised anyway.

Does anybody really care though, since he does it at his own home, for his own convenience?

+1 to handbrake, though. Great program.

I don't see the problem with it, but if he is going to do something illegal anyway why not download the films? They will be better quality for the file size and it will be a lot faster.

um..  i dunno.  i realize that this is "illegal" but i also think that law is dumb.  i own them already and i won't be distibuting the files.  i just want to get rid of 5 bookshelves worth of space.  i guess i could download but to be frank i have "bad taste" in movies and i doubt i'll find a decent sized portion of my library such as my complete catalog of marykate and ashley filmography.  some of my dvds are rare simply because i'm about the only one who would ever watch it.  :P

but thanks for everyone's input.  i really do appreciate it.

Fair enough, but that many DVDs will take a very long time to rip. It is probably worth a look just in case.

$5 a disc?  fuck that.  amazon instant will re-sell me a decent chunck of my library as new for that price.

MakeMKV then compress in Handbrake. You can stream MKVs to your PS3 with PS3mediaserver. AnyDVD's a good program to strip out the copy protection and use the disc as if it has no protection. Good to go straight to Handbrake.
