Forums - Nintendo - Quick Question - Why do people think Paper Mario: Sticker Star is terrible?

If it's your first Paper Mario, you'll probably like the game.

The only reason why it caught flake is because it's not "The Thousand Year Door." Just like how Super Paper Mario on Wii wasn't "The Thousand Year Door", either. People don't like change, and this was a change. (Again.)

So much of what I love about Paper Mario was stripped out from this game, but if you never played the old ones I don't think you'll mind/notice.

It was the same thing for me and FFXIII. I never played a FF game before. They said they took out a bunch of stuff in XIII, but I didn't notice. I absolutely loved the game.

Whether or not you've played a Paper Mario game before (or any video game for that matter) doesn't change the fact that Sticker Star's battles are pointless and the story is non-existent, just sayin!

Honestly, I liked the game. I think one of the main reasons I wasn't so disappointed like most people is because I wanted to explore the world. The main disappointment would come from the fact that it wasn't as story-driven and a lack of a continuous over-world. But to me, that doesn't make it a bad game. In my opinion, it is a well-polished game for what it tries to accomplish.

It's not that it's bad, it's just that it's far worse than the original 2 Paper Mario games. Kinda like Super Mario 3D Land in comparison to other 3D Marios.

Cause I am interested in it. Would be my first Paper Mario (kinda sad isn't it).

What are the biggest cons. And most important of all the biggest pros? I'm really undecided about this now after thinking a little about it.

Lack of motivation for going through battles, as there're no exp. It happens sooner or later with all Paper Marios closer to the game's finale, but in this one, you're dodging every single enemy on the second play.

Story is weak. Battling with stickers and no exp means you're better off avoiding all battles to save stickers. Puzzles can be rather obtuse. Unless you either have an faq at hand or just so happen to have the right sticker at the right time, you have to backtrack.

On the plus side, there are some well designed levels, some amusing dialogue, It's an ok game. Like 6.5 or 7 out of ten. Honestly though, I'd probably either track down a copy of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door or Super Paper Mario or just wait for Mario and Luigi Dream Team.

Well, everything that made Paper Mario a Paper Mario was taken out in Sticker Star. The charismatic party members, the battle system, the gameplay, all of it was altered from Thousand Year Door and the original. Miyamoto needs to understand that everything can't be a 2D Mario action game. That is what New Super Mario Bros. is for. I miss that quality that Paper Mario used to have. But, if you want to get into a Mario RPG that is more in vein of Paper Mario PLEASE GET Mario & Luigi Dream Team. It is probably the best Mario RPG yet. It is really gorgeous, the music is unlike I've ever heard in any Mario RPG and the battle system is both old and new. Please get it. Forget sticker star if you've played TTYD or PM.

I quite liked it...wasn't awesome but a decent game that gave me something to do while chilling overseas...but I'm not a hardcore rpg fan...I probably preferred what I've played of other paper mario games and (for the ds and 3ds) the Mario and Luigi series.
