Forums - Nintendo - Quick Question - Why do people think Paper Mario: Sticker Star is terrible?

Cause I am interested in it. Would be my first Paper Mario (kinda sad isn't it).

What are the biggest cons. And most important of all the biggest pros? I'm really undecided about this now after thinking a little about it.

Paper Mario the series has always been fantastic; excellent gameplay, story, RPG mechanics. Sticker Star attempted a new direction for the series, but IMO failed to do so effectively. The story is bascially taken out of the game (purposely per Nintendo) and now attacks are done through the use of stickers. Once used, the sticker is gone forever. However,in the game EXP is not awarded, therefore there is a disincentive to fight enemies except to get money (which you will have tons of anyhow).

This is why it is the worst of the best

To put it simply, it's a massively stripped and watered down Thousand Year Door. I would suggest you atleast get that game first.

because it dared to be different and break with series´ conventions

Its not bad..... Its just a far away from the original 2..... Very Far Away!

People on here are "core" and don't like the whole sticker element. Plus, it takes away some of its RPG parts.

IMO, Sticker Star is much better than the overly-praised TTYD. I would definitely recommend it but it depends what you like. The only con I see is that the bosses are very difficult unless you have the right sticker so it kind of makes it more like "you can't win unless you find this".

It's still an excellent game, and my 2nd favorite on 3DS behind New Leaf.

How'd it do that exactly?

For me: disappointing soundtrack, split into levels rather than continuous overworld.

The combat system has been changed in such a way that fighting battles are now largely pointless: most of the time the sole reward is coins, which in this game are really only useful for battles.

There are fewer humorous moments in my opinion, and no Partners to speak of (Mario does everything). The only character that accompanies you is pretty dull, and fairly annoying: think of a bossier Navi.

The Thing system is also more frustrating than fun, as you have to know ahead of time which Thing Sticker to keep in your (limited) inventory. This is especially true for the boss battles, which become exercises in monotony (if not futility) if you didn't bring the right Thing Sticker, AND decide to use it at the right time. The first time I fight a boss, I basically consider it lost, as I'm there to learn the pattern instead of actually win. For added headaches, Thing Stickers are almost always larger than normal stickers (and thus take up more inventory space), and they're either expensive or require tedious backtracking to acquire.

The pacing of the game is uneven. World 3 in particular just drags on for an eternity. In fairness, the series has a history of sharing this weakness, so it's wrong to single out Sticker Star.

On the pro side, it's the shortest Paper Mario game, and is pretty well suited for portability.

I don't care about the missing RPG elements. I just want to adventure and collect a little bit. I guess I can't get wrong here :)

And by not playing the first 3 games I will not be biased against it I guess.
