My first SMT game was Devil Survivor for the DS. I pick it up because it was a strategy game similar to Fire Emblem. So if you like FE I highly recommend you start with Devil Survivor (although don't know much about Overclocked, I guess there's not that big of a difference from the DS one).

Persona is much more story heavy than the rest of the SMT games. You probably going to spend most of your time in conversations than fighting, but in general the battle system is extremely similar.

I think it doesn't really matter which game you start with. You could probably even start with SMT IV, the learning curve in that game would be same for the other SMT games.

You can change the difficulty to an easier option in SMTIV.

True, forgot about that. Although he has to die twice to unlocked it first

I think the vast majority of people will die more than twice playing the game.

Oh yeah obviously. The first time I die was trying to recruit a demon and the second was on a boss. Unless you know the game perfectly I think it's impossible to not die.

Really?

The death scenes are so tedious I've just been restarting the software.

Meh, easy mode would probably be too easy, anyway. Difficulty is a fine line to walk.

You can fast-forward through the death thingy.

I have a feeling this has been asked but whatever.

Do I need to have played the other games in the series to understand the storyline for this game or no?

I've only played the sub series: Persona but not the original Shin Megami Tensei games from the NES/SNES/PSX/PS2 eras.

Nope.  SMTIV is a self-contained story.  You can start with SMTIV and you'll be fine story wise.

I don't like it as much as Nocturne,P3FES,P4. It's still really good and better than DDS and any other SMT branded game.

I just had an error fusing a demon...and the one that was created was actually better than the one I planned to fuse. Heck it's even 1 level higher than me. Is this normal or I just got lucky?

Those errors are kind of rare and I've only had two errors while fusing so far.  Both times resulted in a better demon than I was expecting.

Yeah, got myself an Oni that was two levels higher than anything else I had from an error. Fusions can crit, I guess.

I also have a Gremlin that says he's about to transform, so I guess if you level a demon enough, it might evolve without a fusion. We'll see.

Enjoying the game alot! The story is great, and keeps me wanting to come back for more! I plan to complete this game 100%, it will take awhile, but hopefully I can finish it before Dragons Crown and Tales of Xillia come out.
