Forums - General - Why is a victory for something else a victory for us?

This can be about anything you want it to be.  Sports, Oscars, console wars, metacritic, etc It doens't matter.  Just wanted some opinions on why a victory for these things is bragged about by fans?  What is your interpretation for this like a victory for them?  We aren't the ones winning so why is it?  I'm sure this has probably been answered before in pschology but does people have different opinions on this?

just fucking because!

The simplest answer is that people like the feeling of being right. They also like to believe an investment they made in something was worth it, whether that investment was with money or just their time. If I follow a sports team religiously, watch all the games, and memorize all of their stats and they turn out to be garbage year in and year out I will feel like I wasted my time. If that same team wins a championship I feel that my time spent has been justified.

I understand it with sports... Because that's what sport is about, competition. And in my case I have followed (turned up to most games) one team for over 30 years.... It's part of me, I'm emotionally invested in it.

I also follow sports.  I like seeing players win fbecause I think they earned it though.  Even if my favorite team doesnt win im happy as long as i believe the players who has won deserves the win.  I also am pretty amazed at some of the things pro athletes can do.  I have played basketball my whole life but when I watch the NBA for example i am amazed at how talented some people are.

That I not what sport is about at all... That's actually a sad way to view it.

It is, but that's how a lot of people feel. No one likes to back a loser. Especially if you're spending hard earned money to go see games live.

And I didn't mean it as in that's how I personally feel. That was just an example of how I think many people do feel =)

You are actually probably correct.  It is a very well thought out post and probably holds a lot of truth to it.

When a war is won for a nation, consumers, children, gays, races, animals, ect. I feel it is a victory for me because I supported this movement or progression. I actually either put in time or money to help the effort.

When it comes to a sports team, a musician, or an actor I feel happy that something I like is getting more exposure. It gives me more people to converse with about the subject, and gives more money and business to something or someone I enjoy.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

I think we view teams, brands etc. as extensions of ourselves. For example - I define a small part of myself by the football team that I support; I'm happy when they win, and I'm sad when they lose, because I associate them with myself. I associate them with their city, and they kind of become symbolic for all the times that I had there. I think it's natural to imprint extensions like this, and get more emotionally invested because of it.

When A victory happens for something that I perceive as good it makes me feel good. When I saw that USA annihilated Iraq in the war I did not really feel good. I felt like it was a waste of USA and allies and Iraq was devastated in the process for something that might not even come to be. However if USA annihilated Iraq because they were going to destroy the world, I would have liked it better. I always think that Borders and countries are fairly pointless and that we should all be united for one cause. This might sound a little weird but if we all got united and then conquered the solar system then found aliens and started a war to take their planets, I would not be happy because they are living as we live.
