The simplest answer is that people like the feeling of being right. They also like to believe an investment they made in something was worth it, whether that investment was with money or just their time. If I follow a sports team religiously, watch all the games, and memorize all of their stats and they turn out to be garbage year in and year out I will feel like I wasted my time. If that same team wins a championship I feel that my time spent has been justified.


That I not what sport is about at all... That's actually a sad way to view it. 


It is, but that's how a lot of people feel. No one likes to back a loser. Especially if you're spending hard earned money to go see games live. 

And I didn't mean it as in that's how I personally feel. That was just an example of how I think many people do feel =)
