Forums - Nintendo - Shin Megami Tensei IV Review Thread

Awesome! I played Nocturne without ever knowing it was the third entry. I wish it were on console but I'll still play it. I have it pre-ordered!

Anyone can explain me what the Shin Megami Tensei series is about?

The core (numbered) series is about angel vs. demons and different factions/ideologies trying to shape the world in a certain way. Then the player character is the center of it all and decides what to do with the world at the end (that's just a rough outline).

And what with the Persona entries, or the Soul Hacker?

Im surprised about the tone of the reviews and the grades awarded.

I have seen many games with that kind of overview scoring alot less. Its weird, but i will give this another ago before making a final decision. I like the Persona games, but SMT doesnt seem like my cup of tea. I dont like dungeon crawlers, wich is what this looks like.

Persona 3: You're a high school student who just transferred to the city and there's weird shit going on with people turning into coffins and there being another hour after midnight called the Dark Hour, which is when shadows roam. The game is part-RPG and part-sim where you're either dungeon crawling or talking to various NPCs throughout the day and help them with their problems and such. The game follows a calender system and you go to school and are able to go around the city to do stuff and such.  Also good music and battles, as well as a stronger story and character focus than mainline SMT.

Persona 4: Similar to P3, but you transfer to the countryside and there's a murder mystery involving people being thrown into a TV world.

Soul Hackers: You're part of a hacker group called the Spookies and you're trying to uncover what's going on with a villain group called the Phantom Society. This is a first-person dungeon crawler.

Sounds interesting. The TV world thing reminds me totally of Catherine, which is also Atlus's work.

Vincent is a character in Persona 4 (scratch that, Persona 3). Catherine basically takes place in the Persona universe... or that was the original intent, anyway.

It's kind of a dungeon crawler, if you can stand etrian odyssey then you could give it a try. Also the demon talk system is really cool. Watch some gameplay videos and see if you can get into it. But go into the game knowing that it's not like a Persona game in any way . I hope you find it appealing!

Mind blown. Can you meet the Persona 3 characters in Catherine?

No, although Yuri Lowenthal (Yosuke), Liam O'Brien (Akihiko), and Erin Fitzgerald (Chie) are in there so that's close enough. Apparently there's a little stuffed Teddie from P4, too.

The connections are slim but they're there. Probably just little references, might be best not to think too much of it.

This could be Atlus's slogan by this point.

Yup. The best cameo ever - and he doesn't reveal himself until toward the end of the game, though if you played catherine, you know who mister belge jacket-cheater is...ha

Glad to see SMT IV getting such good reviews. To whoever misses atlus stuff, like pezus did... just subscribe: http://www.atlus.com/faithful/
