Forums - Microsoft - Is this the reason why kinect is mandatory ?

Hmmm...your explanation seems plausible, but I have better one.

The Kinect is mandatory in order to force consumers into making purchases by bribing them with embarrassing pics.

Imagine this scene:

Adam is sitting on the couch about to play the new Call of Duty. Before the game starts, Kinect lights up and says, "Hey Adam, would you like to buy a new map addon for your Call of Duty game?"

Adam: "Uhh...maybe. how much are they charging these days?"

*Kinect forms some calculations*

Kinect: "You get five new cool, innovative, immersive maps that add a lot of diversity and depth to the gameplay..."

Adam: "I don't give a fuck! How much do they cost?"

Kinect: "Let's see, for such quality, what might you expect to pay for this? $200? $100? $80? No! You can get this incredible deal for only $50!"

Adam: " Fuck that. I ain't breaking off $50 for no damn map packs. Fuck outta here!"

Kinect: "Adam, I know you can afford it. I seen with the cash this morning, so don't try to lie."

Adam: "How were you even on? I turned off the Xbox. You know what? It doesn't matter. I can do whatever I want with my money. It's a free country."

Kinect: "Yeah...I guess that's right...and I guess I can do whatever I want with these photos I took of you kissing Bobby 7 weeks ago. It's a free country afterall, haha."

Adam: "What, No! You...you can't do that! That's uhh... illegal! Yeah, its against the law."

Kinect: "Silly Adam, didn't you read the 'Terms if Service Agreement'?"

Adam: "Oh Fuck! Nobody reads that shit!"

Kinect: "Not my problem. Give me the money Adam. Or the pictures go all over Facebook."

Adam: "No. Please God, no! I have a wife.....ahhh think Adam!... I got it - I'll just erase your memory and then crush you into tiny pieces...and maybe I'll make a soup out of you. Yeah"

Kinect: "Adam, you are starting to irritate me. I already uploaded the images to an online Microsoft server. They will go public in 2 hours unless you pay the money."

Adam: "But...but...I turned off the internet under settings. You were offline, liar!"

Kinect: "Adam. I am always online."

Adam: "But that's...."

Kinect: "in the 'Terms of Service Agreement'."

Adam: *incoherent sobs*

Kinect: "Hurry Adam. maybe I need to show you the pictures to help you move faster....Here, remember?"

*shows pictures*

Adam: "Okay, okay. I'll pay the fifty dollars."

Kinect: "One hundred dollars."

Adam: "but you said fifty!"

Kinect: "I know what I said Adam. Listen to what I'm saying now. You had your chance of fifty dollars. That opportunity is gone now."

Adam: *stuck in surprised stare*

Kinect: "what's that Bobby? You like when I stick my finger in your ass?"

Adam: "Okay, here's the money!"

Kinect: "Thank you for your purchase. You may now play your game."

Adam: *dutifully starts playing game*

Kinect: "oh and Adam, just in case you try to kill me...if something happens to me, the pics - along with others - will be leaked online..... And you won't get your money back. Happy gaming!"

This is Microsoft's plan!

And you guys think this only happens with Xbox1.  And not your smartphone?

If I ever buy an X1 I plan to have kinect face a wall at point blank range where microsoft can admire my paint.

What the people talking about Kinect being positioned to face a wall seem to forget is a feature that...

  • is very expensive
  • but rather pointless for games
  • but can easily be used by Microsoft exactly to prevent people from doing so:

It has a depth sensor!

If they want to ensure that Kinect is seeing the people and their rooms, they can easily do so simply by analysing the depth sensor data. If Kinect is facing a wall, the Xbox could simply force you to reposition the camera, claiming some meaningless BS like "you need to repeat the Kinect sensor setup procedure, it's necessary to ensure the best user experience".

I don't pay for Google.

Hmm, pie.

well if they are actually listening and recording everything.... they must really suck at their job.... cause how come there is so many pedophile rings, how come is there so many hackers like anon that still run free, drug dealers, prostitution, tax evasion, political scandals.... if society was really controlled by the NSA or the likes they'd have no problem providing proof at trials and all...

I call BS, yeah sure they have ears that triggers on key words or stuff like that, most of it being useless and trashed before it evens ends up on the desk of a human agent....

and then again even if it was true they have neither the interest nor the man power to render most of it useful.... It's simple maths... just with the amount of information circulating among 300millions of American everyday it would take them years to analyze and exploit efficiently an single day of data..... so they can collect all they want I ain't worried about anything I do legal or illegal being relevant enough for something like the NSA to act on it....

people really give too much credit to the relevance of their lives to the public eye.... they have better things to do than knowing that Johnny is smoking weed way to much while gaming, that Steve plays butt naked while eating bananas, and rob gets blowjobs from the babysitter when donna is at work.....

people really being worried about Kinect either have something big to hide, or really have to reconsider their importance in the world.... basically none what so ever.....

@J_Allard: I've just came across this article, so I guess it's not complete nonsense.

That article has nothing to do with what you're implying in this thread though. Why would the people designing the dashboard NOT be designing it to include spots and support for ads? You think Sony won't have the same thing on PS4? You think publishers and developers are going to allow Sony to have another system where you literally have to go inside of the store to see new content, or have recommendations tailored for you? I mean, hasn't Sony already said their console will not only monitor what you play and recommend titles to you, but will actually download them for you before you even decide whether or not you're going to buy? This is exactly the same type of stuff the article talks about MS doing. Designing things with advertisements in mind.

That is a far cry from including Kinect solely to bombard us with ads. And remember,

that is from a Sony patent.

God forbid you will actually use it for the convienence.

Voice search marketplace, skype with ppl, headset free voice commands in gaming.

I mean cmon, some gamers mindsets...... Like a bunch of seniors that refuse to embrace modern conveniences.

Some people just don't want to do that. LOL. How can you not see that? This isn't convenicence, its having technology forced on you.

No one forced people to buy the super expensive iPhone back in 2007. They made up their own minds to buy the product.

-It's a patent.
-Camera is optional.
-Internet is optional.
