I bought a launch model Wii on release day back in 2006, bought Brawl and Prime Trilogy, and Xenoblade, never had a single loading issue with any of them. Used the hell out of my Wii for six years.

If I remember correctly, the dual-layered Wii disc issues was quickly remedied by Nintendo following the Brawl launch. There were suddenly over a million people with dual-layered Wii discs and those types of discs are more difficult for DVD-writers to read, so any amount of contamination over or around the lens can make reading the disc difficult or even impossible. Nintendo heard all the issues and released those nifty little Wii lens cleaners.

Yeah, I never had an issue with dual layered discs and I played plenty of Xenoblade, The Last Story, and Prime Trilogy. Then again, my Wii wasn't a launch one, I got it in '09.

Had not idea. Does the Wii U play DVD's? Or is Nintendo still being stubborn with that sort of thing?

Nope, it still doesn't. Once it has been hacked the situation may look a bit different^^

Why did Nintendo not just use blue ray for next gen?

I had a launch Wii and after a while none of my dual layer discs worked.  Had to play Smash, xenoblade, ect on my roomates Wii.

Traded in my Wii recently when upgrading to Wii U. The first disc gamestop put in didn't work.  They then put in Twilight Princess and it worked so they gave me the full amount.  I was sweating bullets, like damnit please don't realize my wii isn't perfect.

Because then they'd have to pay royalties to Sony and the other companies who own the format.

New Super Mario Bros Wii was only 360MB. You could fit it on a PS1 CD... twice.
