I'm going to say "It's too early to tell, and will be till about mid year."
Though PS3 does have a major advantage as they have like half their triple A games from last year this year instead.

PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far
I'd say the 360 definitely does have an advantage. It's just that the Sony Hype Machine has been in high gear about most of the titles the OP listed since, well, 2006.
Oh, and, SSJ12 moment:
Here's all the PC AAA games coming out in 2008!
*lists every single PC game coming out in 2008, including completely unproven IPs from unknown developers, sequels to awful games, and vaporware*
hurr PC wins!

SSJ, I love your pc list!!! I wondered where Warhammer online was until i saw the mmorpg hahah. Way to push it into everyones face. =P
I don't see in any dimension or reality that PS3 is at a disadvantage this year when it comes to software. That is just not true, regardless of taste and stance in the whole "war".
How exactly is it the 360 has the advantage (again I might add) this year, Garcian? Gears of War 2? Fact is; you can't release hits from the same series every year and sell 8 million copies, it just doesn't work that way, even if you happen to love your 360.
And about the PC games this year; tacky comment, there truly are some monster hits coming for PC this year, and 2008 is believed by almost every PC gamer and critic to be the "revival" or "rebirth" of PC gaming as a mainstream industry since the decline from early 90's.
Lastly; do you think its a good idea to bash mods like that... ?

If you don't think that releasing the same series every year and selling millions works... well, EA and a little series called Madden would like a word with you. Not to mention every other popular IP in existence (Microsoft's own Halo 3 sort of proves the point; it's basically a graphically-updated Halo 2, and it sold over 5 million.)
And, no doubt there'll be some good games for PC this year, but listing every single game coming out for the PC as "AAA," including a slew of unproven IP, likely horrible games like Savage 2, and still-in-early-development titles like Dragon Age (which doesn't even have a release date yet, and likely won't for a long, long while) is just silly.
Lastly, I don't bash mods. I just call them out as I would any other poster when I think they're wrong. Being a mod makes someone automatically right on affairs concerning the forums, true, but it doesn't make them untouchable where their opinions on other subjects are concerned.

It really depends on how you define AAA. Is a AAA title based solely on review scores? I don't think so...
To me, AAA means more than just a score. I feel the term is massively abused now days (lol, a guy tried to call Conan AAA on here not too long ago)....Many "A" & "AA" games are termed "AAA" and many people use PERSONAL PREFERENCE to determine AAA. A system of standards is definitely needed--just like Greatest Hits have...maybe a cumalative score involving reviews, history, sales, etc.
Maybe This:
Average Score of over 8.75 = ONE "A"
History...must be 2nd Title or more in series = ONE "A"
SALES/HYPE...Over a certain sales amount (1,000,000) or attach rate (15%), etc. = ONE "A"
So, 2 out of the 3 would equal a "AA" Title....3 out of the 3 would = "AAA", etc.
1. Reviews/Scores
2. History/Tradition....not a one hit wonder (Can White Knight Story, Little Big Planet, Halo Wars, Alan Wake, or Too Human really qualify when they are brand new IP's with NO proven history) IMO a "AA" should be the MAX CONSIDERATION for a new IP.
3. Sales/Attach Rate...a game can be wonderful and score a 9.0, but if it only sells 250,000 copies can you really call it AAA? (All the NGS have sold relatively unwell; however, that doesn't mean this one will.)
4. Hype....this has to be considered because hype is a huge part of the gaming industry. Halo is a master of the hype train...so is Mario....so is Final Fantasy.
Anyhow, IMO opinion (which is what everyone is giving)
PS3: GT5, MGS4, GTAIV (LBP, WKS, KZII, Motorstorm 2, Resistance 2, are too unproven to me to deserve the ULTRA SPECIAL CROWN of "AAA") Don't think FFXIII or God of War III will make it out this year.
360: GTAIV, Gears of War II (SC: Conviction, Alan Wake, Halo Wars, Too Human are also too unproven to deserve the ULTRA SPECIAL CROWN OF "AAA") Also don't think Forza 3 (may only be a AA title IMO anyhow) will make it out this year--they need to rebuild the engine IMO.

starcraft said: There is no question that the PS3 will be getting the better share of the ESTABLISHED games this year, however even in this area Sony's advantage over the 360 is not as vast as many claim. However, many people are rountinely claiming that the PS3 will have more AAA games than the 360 this year, and I thought I'd do an examination of the likelihood this will actually happen. I define a AAA title as one that has an average score OVER 90% To help make this comparison, I will be using gamerankings.com and the thread at the bottom of the page (I trust ssj12 is a big enough Sony fan to put every game I need to consider for the PS3 in that thread), as well as my own knowledge. What follows is a list of the past few titles and their scores (or only one if available) in each PS3 series releasing THIS year. I will not include multiplatform titles or timed exclusives unless there is a reasonable chance that the other console's version WONT launch thisyear.
PS3: Killzone 2: Killzone 1 scored 73.5 NOT AAA Singstar: Majority of titles under 80%, PS3 version released in Europe and at 82.5%. NOT AAA Metal Gear Solid 4: Majority of main PSX and PS2 titles over 90%, LIKELY AAA Gran Turismo 5: Last title wasn't AAA, however most have been. Probably WONT be out this year. Likely AAA Final Fantasy XIII: Probably WONT be out this year, the majority of titles are around 90%. Likely AAA Tekken 6: Inconsistent history, last two titles have MISSED AAA status. POSSIBLE AAA Resistance 2: Last title NOT AAA, however great developers and expense spared on sequel. POSSIBLE AAA Motorstorm 2: Last title scored 82.3. NOT AAA SOCOM: Confrontation: No home console has EVER made AAA status. NOT AAA
Total possible AAA titles: 2 Sony has LBP and Haze that are unproven titles that may go AAA with big budgets, hype and talent. Two of Sony's likely AAA titles may not make 2008.
XBOX 360: Halo Wars: Every title easily AAA, however this game is produced by different studio. Possible AAA Fable 2: Last title received 85.2 on gamerankings. NOT AAA Gears of War 2: Last title received 93.8. Likely AAA Forza Motorsport 3: Last titles at 92.9% and 89.8%. Maybe not in 2008. Likely AAA Splinter Cell: Conviction: Many titles, the majority on Xbox over 90%. Most recent just under. Likely AAA Ninja Gaiden 2: Both Xbox titles were easily AAA. Likely AAA Banjo-Kazooie 3: Both previous console titles were AAA. Likely AAA Viva Pinata 2: Former title was 84.9 on gamerankings. NOT AAA
Total likely AAA titles: 5 Total possible AAA titles: 1 Microsoft has a clear advantage in new IP this year with Too Human, Alan Wake and Lost Odyssey, with general consensus being they have more unannounced games than Sony (IMO). However despite recent rumours to the contrary, I remain doubtful that FM3 will make 2008
From this list, drawn from an unbiased statistics gathering website, we can see that whilst Sony may have many high-profilegames that are easy to market, the Xbox 360 has a far greater chance of a large number of AAA games than the PS3. Edit: It is also worth noting that most multi-platform games that were already released that I encountered has a better score on the Xbox 360 than on the PS3.

The fact you have Banjo-Kazooie 3 as likely and are completely missing LBP is very telling.
Ninja Gaiden II is probably going to be great but it's too hardcore to be a system seller if it's anything like the previous games in the serie,,,
ssj12 said: Motorstorm not AAA... you fail. This generation 80%+ is AHAHAH. Also you missed GT5: Prologue. It is a full game after all. |
fixed...
Seriously somethings gone wrong in your head if you think +80% is AAA
and Motorstorm (84 on metacritic and 82% on gamerankings) is not AAA...
