Editor’s Letter: CNN Trolls Both PS4 & Xbox One as Journalism Fails Yet Again

July 6, 2013 Written by Sebastian Moss

Editor’s Letter is a series of ongoing articles on the state of PSLS, its future and the future of the industry as a whole.

Over the years, I’ve become pretty used to sites lacking any sort of moral compass and simply pumping out shoddy trash, but it still hurts me every time I see it – especially when it’s from a respected national outlet.

Today CNN sunk to a shocking low, with the same writer publishing these two articles on the same day – ’5 reasons the Playstation 4 will crush the competition’ and ’5 reasons the Xbox One will dominate’. The same writer on the same day.

I’m not even going to bother talking about how both articles are poorly written, needlessly split across multiple pages to force you to click again and again, that he writes Playstation not PlayStation, and that he thinks there are games called Killzone War Zone and Octodad: Deadliest Catch.

Instead, I’m going to talk about what’s wrong with the same writer on the same publication writing these two articles. Each one is created to troll the audience and rile them up by saying something sensationalist, with the writer declaring a victor in each article, successfully stirring the pot in both camps. The PS4 ‘will crush’, the Xbox One ‘will dominate’… these are not articles about how either console could completely win (which is impossible anyway), but singular irrefutable statements of fact – that refute each other.

Worse still, each article is essentially a copy/paste of the other, opening the same, borrowing the same phrases.

These are posts purposely designed to get people angry and clicking, which is more commonly known as flamebait. There is no respect for the readers, they are a means to a click-filled end, idiots conned into reading awful articles that are completely misleading. It’s disgusting, shameful and a poor excuse for journalism.

This is a writer and a publication that is straddling both sides of an argument, without offering balance, just flip flopping for traffic. There are genuine reasons to believe one console may lead another (not crush), but CNN have managed to pretend both sides will ‘dominate’ the other.

If you’re going to write misspelled, factually incorrect, one-sided garbage, at least stand by your misspelled, factually incorrect, one-sided opinion and don’t contradict yourself on the same day.

Like PlayStation LifeStyle are any better.

Titanfall isn't an exclusive....

In all honesty I've never really liked Xbox(Not a lot of games Im interested in, Xbox live, and I don't like the controller), but Xbox One does have some games that have me interested enough to consider getting it. Just the price and the lame Tv crap turns me off.

They think this is some kind of a joke.

I thought they said that Titanfall might come to the PS4? Those reasons won't make me buy an Xbox One, but maybe one game down the line will.

Unless you follow gaming on the internet you don't know there is a chance it could go to the PS4. Plus I wouldn't want to wait around a year just to see if there is a chance you get to play it on another console or not.

Wait, lol. Everyone who doesn't have a 360 or getting Xbox One has a finely tuned PC to play on. Didn't you get that memo?

DOMINATE!!!

http://money.cnn.com/gallery/technology/2013/07/05/xbox-will-win.fortune/index.html

1.  Halo - Peaked with Halo 3 and so is becomming less relevant to the success of Xbox conxoles than previously. But the Halo fans will buy Xb One for Halo 5 so it will be a system seller, however not to the extent that is will lead Xb One to dominate the generation.

2.  Kinect - It still won't be enough of an tech upgrade to make it a dominating control scheme for gaming. TVs are coming out with voice and gesture commands, so if you get a TV with that tech Kinect becomes redundant, thus is a negative selling point for those people.

3.  Titanfall - it's ability to sell systems is unknown. As an online only game it only appeals to big fans of online MP FPS. That's a good segment of the market, yes, but I think those gamers are already committed to one or other or both or all 3 consoles. And y'know it's on PC and Xbox 360, a 360+1 game is not going to be as big a system seller as a Xb one only game.

4.  Smartglass - I don;t know enough about this, but doesn;t it work on 360 too? so 17 million people have downloaded the app already, and presumably to use it on 360. That doesn't translate into a lot of early gen sales, and it almost certainly doesn't represent a potentially expanded install base. And a lot of those people will be part of the crowd that was ready to dump all things Xbox before the 180. MS will have to work to bring all those people back into the fold, let alone bring in new customers.

5.  TV - I think this is not a big selling point to people who don't already want Xb one for the games. People who only want the TV features are paying about $200 to much to get the service they are interested in, and you're not going to convert them into gamers to make that extra $200 feel like good value. Later in the gen when the box is cheaper people might buy into it. But by that time there may be many of these live TV features in people's regular cable boxes, so who knows, maybe they will be too expensive at the start and just one in a crowded market later on.

My take on the 5 points.

Summarising: each of those points taken individually don't really amount to a killer app, and collectively they don't make for a very compelling package except to online MP FPS fans.

1.  Halo - I love the series - better than anything on PlayStation.

2.  Kinect - I'm looking forward to the improvments.  hopefully the voice commands will be accurate.

3.  Titanfall - Will people leap into XOne for this game?

4.  Smartglass - 17 million people have downloaded this app - me included

5.  TV - I am excited for this one.  My kids play the games, but they are also excited about the new tv experience

Not sure if xbox One will dominate for these 5 reasons.  Not even sure if these reasons are good enough.  But I'm in.

These five reasons won't appeal to lot of new users and also exisiting users in a exciting way.

But these five reasons of PS4 does appeal to many even for new comers.

1 Price (100$ less)

2 Brand (Sony is known for gaming from three best Consoles)

3 The Power (It has better hardware ~30% more than Xbone)

4 The developers (Sony has great First party Developers and those developers names are known for many people)

5 The Indies (Its flooding with so many Indie titles so far and the Controller with touchpad is bringing many new ideas)

GAMING is not about spending hours to pass/waste our time just for fun,

its a Feeling/Experience about a VIRTUAL WORLD we can never be in real, and realizing some of our dreams (also creating new ones).

So, Feel Emotions, Experience Adventure/Action, Challenge Game, Solve puzzles and Have fun.

PlayStation is about all-round "New experiences" using new IP's to provide great diversity for everyone.

Xbox is always about Online and Shooting.

Nintendo is always about Fun games and milking IP's.

The Xbox is an American brand, of course CNN is going to back it despite the bad press where it truly matters.

Why do you Sony guys think that every single media outlet in the world is bias to xbox?? People are taking this way too seriously. There isn't any real favoritism being shown here, they had the exact same article about ps4. Its just objective reasons why both consoles are good. They just have flamebait titles because they know silly sensitive fanboys will flock to these articles like flies to sh*t.

Response to the top 5 reasons just so you understand.

1. Halo cannot win a console war alone. (See first Xbox sales. It only hit 24 million while Halo still had strong sales and only experienced a three million console hike at the highest even though their install base grew to almost four times the previous gens size. Those who want Halo will buy Halo, but it wont help Microsoft.)

2. Kinect is a weight on public opinion which is why based on price the PS4 is the first option to many. (Microsoft knows people wont buy Kinect right off the bat so they forced it down peoples throats as well as intergrating it into the system.)

3. Titanfall wont be exclusive for long (its also on PC).

4. Everyone is banking on tablets in the next gen, so I dont see how this could be an advantage.

5. TV wont matter if you cant get the casuals to buy the console.

The only major reason why they would win the next gen is by price and a years headstart (which they don't have at all). Most people dont realize it but the PS3 outsold the 360's first year and other years minus about two years. Americans en masse who purchase these consoles at launch are majorly the hardcore and third party enthusiasts who pay based on price and do not have any loyalty to exclusives (See how Microsoft cut into Sony's marketshare this gen). They don't give a crap about any of these things at launch, just that the PS4 offers more thats concrete that matters to them at a console launch.
