Think you played into the ironic government conspiracy to convince you that they are still all powerful and weren't caught with their pants down. It is a VERY scary thought that your government can't protect you and easier to believe that they are the enemy.

In the end, it comes down to Al Queida and Bin laden themselves claiming responsibility for the attack. Something the conspiracy guys somehow overlook.
