Forums - Gaming - Nintendo needs to drop WiiU's price soon and here's why

Tagged games:

You know, even if Wii U doesn't pull off moderate success the 3DS, which will probably outsell everything, will pull Nintendo through. The Vita isn't even a competition right now so don't mention it please.

I agree that the name is too confusing for its own good. I think they should have gone retro and named it "Super Wii" or something totally different but that would do the Wii injustice since a wii is basically inside your Wii U.

The price is what will potentially hurt but is currently helping Nintendo and its Wii U. Let me explain, This holiday millions of shoppers will be tasked with buying some game or something for their kids/family and they want to save every penny they can, so when they see that Wii U with Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong they will be quite tempted. No, neither game itself is a system-seller but Nintendo has the strongest fanbase ever to grace gaming so that should help out a bit. The 3DS will sell millions due to one reason: Pokemon. So Wii U needs to be Nintendo's focus. 2014-2016 will be Nintendo's strongest years, especially 2014 due to Smash Bros and Mario Kart. PS4 will sell well and it'll probably take top console spot behind 3DS very soon but that doesn't mean Wii U is just doomed. As for how it is helping, the Wii U is still getting Nintendo money as long as it sells 1 game along with a console. So, I think Nintendo will keep that price until MK8 and Manufacturing costs lower to drive Wii U sales. If you worry about any console it shouldn't be Wii U. It should be Xbone. It is $500. The same price as a low end PC like my Dell laptop. So yes, the price and name will hurt Wii U. I can just see a kid asking their parents for a Wii U and them replying "don't you already have that son?". I still think it should have been called the Super Wii, nostalgic and fitting.

$100 price cut the moment 3D World hits, been saying this forever now.

... Well, not the 3D World part since I didn't know what the 3D Mario would be called back before E3, but you get the idea.

No, nobody does a price cut during the holidays, it makes no sense. Historically price cuts happen in April/May or Aug/Sept. The reason for this is too build up momentum going into the holidays or to continue momentum post holidays. U dont just spring a price cut during the holidays since many retailers will be doing there own discounts and bundles.

So my guess is either a $50 in August to coincide with Pikmin 3, summer update and new marketing campaign, this is a good time because starting in Aug there is a new exclusive every 2-3 weeks, that will give it 3 months of building momentum up to the holiday season.

Or $100 price cut in April to coincide with Mario Kart 8 and to start off the fiscal year strong. This would be a good since all the consoles will be getting into there average weekly groove and PS4/One launch hype will have died down.

I think the price cut wont be this year. Nintendos plan is games, advertising, bundles for the holidays. If that doesnt work then its time for a peice cut.

You do to counter a launch, and regardless 3D World is rumored for October as it is. I might have agreed with you if it were November.

Its coming in December, and the majority of people buying those new consoles at launch will buy them regardless of what the competition does. Next year is when they will fighting for mass consumers

I disagree, I think if they don't drop before the holidays, the Wii U is simply done and any fighting after that will be futile.

But how? do u seriously not see the situation getting better when the 1st party titles release, marketing plus holiday deals/bundles? I never said a price cut couldnt happen this year, all I said is doing one during the holidays makes no sense. Either a few months before or a few months after, which are the times 90% of price cuts happen.

I think they can afford to drop the price with the recent Yen fluctuation. They can afford up to a 30% drop at the moment. $70 price drop is not outa the equation.

Is the Yen stable enough to keep this fluctuation up enough, though?

Who knows. I don't think it'll go back to the high of 77 Yen/US. Should stay at least this level which will make Nintendo afford a price cut in the West.

Nintendo can surely afford a price cut in the west at the moment with the falling yen. The question is, would they want to? Losing $50 potential income per unit or more is significant cash to throw away. The key would be how many more units they would sell. If at the current price they would sell 5 million more Wii U's through the end of the year and price drop would bump it to 6, I doubt they would do it. But if the difference was 3 million and 7 million, surely they would.

I think we'll be able to tell if they are going to do it once Pikmin 3 launches. If that, and the following software, bumps sales of Wii U's to more respectable levels, they may stay the course. If sales stay awful, a price cut is coming.

I said that simply because people seem to always repeat themselves for years now "sony will beat nintendo" there is no other option ever(I think thats totally out of control and crazy) so thats my counter argument lol evrything seems to be a fact and there cant be no other way there are no options never ever. even you say "Even if PS3 will outsell PS4 for some weeks" you say this as it is almost a fact...why weeks ? why not for some time or months or days if you want. thats my point. you probably meant something else maybe im mistaken i dont know im just saying to prove my point but its out of control adn everyone needs to calm down take a deep breath and realize price is not everything... the market is big and no one knows anything.

bolded: the funny part is that it didn't happen the last 3 times (3ds vs vita, wii vs ps3, ds vs psp), has a high chance of repeating with Wii U vs Ps4 and yet they'll keep saying sony will win.

How do you calculate probabilities? I'd bet you don't have much experience in that regard. You don't even think WiiU will get a price cut, and yet you are so bold that you say a console that is selling 20k per week has a high freaking chance of beating the PS4. I've never seen such a leap of faith made by someone who does seem to have all his screws in check .

The Wii vs. PS3 part will happen eventually, though. The preachers will be prophets. And pezus will be poet. I should stop.

Let's go by parts: 1) I totally think wii u will get a price cut this year but in regard to competing with ps4/xone, it doesn't need one.

2) AGAIN, you are comparing sales from a drought period with imaginary sales from ps4, wich has no guarantee of doing any better than wii u.

I calcullated these "probabilities" through simple logic: Wii u is cheaper and has a great stream of exclusive titles coming as soon as august. Ps4 is more expensive and it's launch lineup is mostly cross gen titles + a few non system seller exclusives. by the time the more interesting titles for ps4 come, in 2014, Wii u will already have a great momentum and headstart. So basically, there's a high chance of Wii U beating ps4.

Nope i dont think they are gonna do it. At this point i dont think they can. The gamepad is not cheap and they are all in on it so they gotta hope their new games will get peoples attention and they will see the value in the gamepad over the ps4. Who knows for this round of holidays the 299 version may really take off. It gets them 100 under the ps4. But honestly it comes down to the games. They need to drop wii sports u before the holidays and market it correctly and the will kick but this holiday.

Why some ppl is so sure that a decrease in price will guarantee a huge explosive growth in sales numbers for the Wii U is beyond me seriously,, did all those ppl thought for a moment that the lack of games for all tastes might be the prob here?

Hhmm...I don't know...maybe because WiiU won't be lacking software later this year?

Reasons Nintendo may not have to...

1. The Wii U is actually selling at almost the same levels of PS3 in it's first year.. right now it is the most expensive console on the market... What happens when other consoles more expensive come out?? Yes I know the sale outs and all.. but let's be honest that is destined to happen in this day and age.. initial sell outs does not mean strong legs throughout the first year..

2. The way this is setting up right now.. the other consoles (360 and PS3) are still going to be out.. and they already have well established libraries.. so the New Consoles are going to have to compete with their old consoles.. and the Wii U.. (Not to mention if their old consoles continue to get games) All of which will be at better prices..

3. Think about this... Nintendo's Wii U.. (Like all Nintendo systems) depends primarily on first party games to sell their system.. Wii U does not have a lot of the big names out yet.. (Other than Mario Bros and maybe Nintendo Land if you want to throw that in there) and yet has somehow managed to sell 4 million units.. (Grant you most of that was because of initial sell out I mentioned earlier) But it has sold at a fairly steady pace month after month... Now however Nintendo has some first party titles coming.. including big Names like Donkey Kong, and another Mario... a Remake of a Zelda..(Which will most likely do well) Wii Fit U.. is coming.. along with Wii Party U (Both of which will most likely move units.. ) Plus a Pikmen.. and of course Wonderful 101... these games alone will help boost sales.. at the current price...

4. Black Friday.. I hate to say it.. but let's be honest.. are stores going to have a better deal on a system just launched? (If they are out by then) Or a system that is already a year old?? I think this is where you see your price cut.. (Most likely 50-100 bucks) or some of the more impressive bundles and deals..and this is where Nintendo picks up a huge amount of sells.. (Right Price + Finally the games to justify the purchase)

In the end.. I think they do get one( right around the holidays) .. but I really don't think they need one..

1. PS3 hasn't even come close to 20k in a single week...ever. So no, WiiU sales are nowhere near PS3 sales. Even though PS3 didn't launch in PAL regions until late March 2007. And you know that PS3 and 360 won't disappear from the market when PS4 and One come out, so WiiU will still be more expensive than they are. Why would PS4 and One costing more have any effect on WiiU's state in the world? In the eyes of the hardcore gamers, there are good reasons for PS4 being $100-$150 more expensive than a PS3. The reasons for WiiU being $30 to $80 more expensive than a PS3 are harder to see.

2. This point counters your first point. It's the same thing I pointed out.

3. Some years ago, Mario would be mentioned as Nintendo's biggest IP. 20-30k per week for months sure is steady, but in this case steady isn't good at all. Of course the games will boost the sales, but the boost won't be big enough (to turn things around) without a price cut.

4. Possible. But a few hundred k units doesn't change much in the grand scheme of things. The price cut needs to be permanent.

You seem to be the opposite to many Nintendo fans in here, who say the WiiU needs a price cut but don't think it will get one.

Actually there was plenty of times the PS3 sold around 20K worldwide.. and actually.. some weeks the Wii U is doing better in the US then the PS3 did.. I don't think it will help it too much.. but still.. and a few hundread K Units don't make a differance?? it does if the momentum carries.. and that few hundread K becomes Millions by years end.. and no Point 2 does not exactly counteract point one.. what I was saying is when the others come out.. they will not only have their last gen.. but also Wii U to compete with which is next gen.. at the end.. they could suffer more than the Wii U for that.. or maybe not.. The Wii U might be able to holsd it's own because it is a next gen system.. and will have the games to back it up.. (From Nintendo)

Nintendo Wii by generations...

1. Wii

2. Wii U

3. Wii O U

Predictions made by gamers concerning the current Nintendo line up of games.

Pikmen 3= Little Bump to nothing. (Got Little Bump)

Wind Waker HD= Won't sell anything (The explosion happened here and at one time 4 Wii U games was in the Amazon top 100)

Super Mario 3D World= Won't help at all looks cheap. (Currently the most sought after Wii U game and continuing the Wii U increase.)
