Forums - Gaming - Poll Reveals that Japan May be Losing Interest in Home Consoles

The sales charts prove this.

I hate polls. 2,144 is nowhere near accurate. You could get them all to say they like going to the movies and that's it. To me polls with low numbers like this are simply a waste of time and resources.

you don't know how polling work do you as long as the sample polled is representative of the entire population 2000 people is way enough for this.

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

There's been a decline in total japanese sales every gen since the 5th (31 million), with the 6th gen at roughly 28 million, and current gen at roughly 24 million.

I hate to be an alarmist here, but dedicated game handheld sales are on a decline compared to last gen as well: with about 27 months under it's belt, the 3DS is just under 12 million in Japan, where as the DS was just under 15.5 million in 27 months... And I don't even think I'd need to mention the Vita, but that too is under at 1.5 million in Japan in 18 months as opposed to the PSP's 3.5 million in 18 months. We're already looking at a 5.5 million drop gen over gen for handhelds, an even bigger drop than what we saw last gen for consoles, and frankly that handheld only looks to grow as the gen goes on while the PS3 might be able to shore up another 1 million before everything is said and done this gen and raise the drop to only 3 million.

Thankfully, I have a sneeking suspicion Japanese developers will be able to hop on board this gen much more quickly and in much more meaningful numbers (as well as with much more significant games) than last gen, so hopefully that can help stop the bleeding a good bit.

But I believe the DS already had Pokémon Diamond & Pearl by then.

The 3DS doesn't have Pokémon X & Y yet.

I think it's best to wait til April 1st 2K14 to compare the DS to 3DS sales in Nihon.

Even if I were to drop to 21 months instead for both, bringing us before Pokemon, it still comes to 10.5 million for DS as opposed to 8 million for 3DS, a 2.5 million drop.

Just like there was nothing Sony could do with the PS3? MS could easily drop the price to match the PS4 price. They won't do it until next year at the earliest because early adopters will buy the X1 no matter the price at launch. I predict a fall 2014 $100 price drop to match the PS4 with Kinect still included. Combine this with Halo releasing and X1 will have a huge second holiday. If they keep the price at $499 for holiday 2014 then MS really is stupid and Sony will most likely win this gen. X1 can't be priced higher than PS4 for too long.

You can't compare the PS3 with the X1. The PS3 has the PS brand going for it.

The PS2 sold 23 million consoles in Japan, which is equal to the amount of Wii and PS3 consoles sold COMBINED. The DS and PSP combined sales in Japan equal well over 50 million.

The problem is that Japanese devs couldn't adapt to the HD generation. Konami, Capcom, Sega, Namco weren't irrelevant but took a back seat to western devs this generation, and in the next generation, they are practically done. Konami has Metal Gear Solid and that's it. Capcom couldn't even get Dead Rising 3 going til Microsoft helped them.

It's sad to see. Japanese games have the heart and soul you don't see in many western games. Hopefully they finally adapt this next generation, but as I said, they are barely on the radar. Square Enix looks to be making a little comeback with Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Hearts 3, but who knows when they will be out and if that is all S.E. has (for Japanese).

How do Japanese games have heart but not western games?

Japanese have lost their heart and soul I believe as well, in their effort to westernize games. But games like Castlevania, Mega Man, Radiant Silvergun, Super Mario, Panzer Dragoon, Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Contra, Resident Evil, Act Raiser, Snatcher, etc. etc. The Saturn had tons of soul as well, for example. It's just not the same today with generic shooters like Mass Effect, Gears of War, Halo, Call of Duty etc. etc. They're not bad games but they are super generic and expendable.

You are listing games from a decade or more ago. Resident Evil is a shooter too now. At the same time you are forgeting that the west gave us games like The Last of Us, Journey, Flower, Sly Cooper, Sound Shapes, LBP, Outland, Enslaved, etc.

Resident Evil is survival horror again, not just on 3DS because they brought it to HD Consoles & PC to promote the game Resident Evil: DDD (3DS exclusive).

When it comes to western games, I'm personally more into Mass Effect & Bioshock, while he is more into God of War & so fort.

The Japanese is just giving us more with more quality is all, like Bravely Default & Project X Zone & Rhythm Thief and the Emperor's Treasure & Sonic Lost World & King of Pirates & Mega Man (new one) & Beyond the Labyrinth & Rodea the Sky Soldier & Youkai Watch & Dragonball Heroes: Ultimate Mission & etc. etc. etc.

Good...

I LOVE ICELAND!

Cool. Can only help X1 worldwide sales comparisons.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

@HikenNoAce
The PS brand means nothing in the US

Shouldn't they have also asked what they are planning on purchasing in the future...or new things they are getting into?
