Actually no, these people are quite common, they are called "PS3 software developers". Since they figured out  (more or less depending on talent) how to use the complex cell architecture, it will be a very small step for those people to use the gpu's additional features, because that one is far easier to get at than the cell.

Is programming for the Cell's SPEs and and GPU programming really that comparable? Most GPU programming I've seen has been from academics running simulations. Even PC games have very limited GPU use outside of the visuals and very few non-gaming commercial programs utilise GPU power too.
