Was looking at some stuff, and noticed an unpleasant trend on Xbox 360 games.
According to gamerankings.com, I checked all the top% aggregate games to see how much variety each console had. Here are my results:
Wii: I took the Wii's top 10 games.
1 - 97.64% - Super Mario Galaxy (Platformer)
2 - 97.35% - Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Platformer)
3 - 94.58% - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Adventure RPG)
4 - 93.25% - The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Adventure RPG)
5 - 92.84% - Super Smash Brothers Brawl (fighter)
6 - 91.74% - Xenoblade Chronicles (JRPG)
7 - 90.23% - Metroid Prime 3: corruption (First Person Shooter/Adventure)
8 - 88.67% - Kirby's Epic Yarn (Platformer)
9 - 88.18% - New Super Mario Brothers Wii (Platformer)
10- 87.87% - Donkey Kong Country Returns (Platformer).
5/10 of those games are platformers.
2/10 of those games are Adventure RPG
1/10 of those games is a JRPG
1/10 of those games is a Fighter
1/10 of those games is a hard to classify first person shooter/adventure.
That's 5 different genres (though super heavy on platformers, Nintendo's speciality)
There are 7 different IP's (Mario, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Metroid, Zelda, Xenoblade, and Smash Brothers), though they are all but one first party titles.
PS3: these are the top ten PS3 exclusives. All of these are retail games.
1 - 96.38% - Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (Action/Adventure)
2 - 95.05% - The Last of Us (Uh, hard to classify. Horror/adventure?)
3 - 94.75% - LittlebigPlanet (Platformer)
4 - 93.53% - Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (Stealth Action)
5 - 92.63% - God of War III (Action)
6 - 92.56% - Journey (Adventure)
7 - 92.04% - LittlebigPlanet 2 (Platformer)
8 - 91.79% - Ico and Shadow of the Colossus HD (Adventure)
9 - 91.78% - Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (Action/Adventure)
10- 90.56% - Killzone 2 (First Person Shooter)
2/10 of those games are Action/Adventure.
2/10 of those games are Platformers
2/10 of those games are adventure (one is a compilation, the other an indie title)
1/10 of those games is a survival horror (though that's up for debate)
1/10 of those games is a stealth action game
1/10 of those games is an action game
1/10 of those games is an FPS
Of that list, there are technically 9 IP's (since Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are two). Almost every entrant in that list is a different IP save LittleBigPlanet 2 and Uncharted 3.
Of that list, 8 are retail, one is a collection, and one is a digital download.
And if you continue down PS3's list, there's a Racer (Wipeout), three sports titles (All MLB The Show), a Western RPG (Demons Souls), Another Action/Adventure (The first Uncharted), an interactive whatever-a-thon (Heavy Rain), A shooter/platformer (Ratchet and Clank), and a collection of action titles (God of War Collection). what I'm trying to say is that if you want variety, the PS3 is the place to get it.
However, I then looked at the Xbox 360 list. The results were not nearly as good with variety.
Xbox 360: These are the top ten Xbox 360 exclusives
1 - 93.37% - Gears of War (Third PErson Shooter)
2 - 93.53% - Halo 3 (First Person Shooter)
3 - 93.32% - Gears of War 2 (Third PErson Shooter)
4 - 92.26% - Forza Motorsport 3 (Racer)
5 - 91.79% - Halo: Reach (First Person Shooter)
6 - 91.52% - Trials Evolution (Racer)
7 - 91.49% - Gears of War 3 (Third Person Shooter)
8 - 90.66% - Forza Motorsport 4 (Racer)
9 - 89.98% - Forza Motorsport 2 (Racer)
10- 88.69% - Project Gotham Racing 3 (Racer)
5/10 of those games are racers
3/10 of those games are Third PErson Shooters
2/10 of those games are first person shooters.
Or alternatively
5/10 of those games are racers
5/10 of those games are shooters (Since the only difference between first and third is the perspective.)
of that list, there are 5 IP's. 2 Halo games, 3 Gears of War games, 3 Forza motorsport games, 1 Project Gotham Racing game, and one Trials game.
There is no way you can spin this: This is monotonous. Seriously. People like harassing the Xbox for relying too heavily on a limited variety in IP and genres, but the facts are the facts. of its top ten games, half are shooters and half are racers, not to mention the top ten is dominated almost entirely by the big three: Halo, Gears, and Forza.
Facts are facts.
After that there's some cool DLC titles like Geometry Wars, Shadow Complex, Fez, and Rez HD, then a diversion in Fable II, but then it's back to HAlo 4. Which is a shooter.
Now, on the flipside, I know there are more games on the Xbox if you keep looking, and their digital download service is arguably the best digital distribution amongst consoles at the moment (though PS3 isn't far behind), the fact is that the Xbox lacks the variety needed to keep REAL gamers interested. Plenty of dudebro fratboy YEAHHHH BOOYAH styled games, but where's the originality? where's the creativity.
People harass Nintendo for milking their franchises (and they do), but at least when they release a 3D Mario game, you KNOW it's gonna be one of the best games ever. Same with Zelda. same with Smash Brothers and Metroid and even Kirby or Donkey Kong.
and this list (amongst others) is one of the main reasons I tend to gravitate towards both Sony and Nintendo. Sony has so much variety that it doesn't matter WHAT genre you like, there's something for you. Nintendo may not have as much variety as them, but I've come to expect that their games will always be grand, and amongst my favorites in any respective year.
Xbox, on the other hand, relies heavily on two genres that aren't for me: Shooters and Racers. I can enjoy a good shooter (Bioshock Infinite, for example), but I'm picky.
So sound off, what do YOU think about what each system has to offer? I can pull up more data I gathered, and would be happy to share.
