You're likely right and it's just that we, or I, didn't notice it as much because, well, there weren't as many reviews and tests available as there are now.

Still, they're pushng a bit too much for my liking.

Some people would still try when the part in question was particularly egregious. I liked to do it too, but because my case had pretty bad ventilation :D

Here's an interesting example, though more commonly you'd see people settling for 70% of the power and 90% of the performance, which is closer to the case with the 4090 considering the actual average power consumption in gaming.

NVIDIA RTX 30 ‘Ampere’ GPU Supply Evaporates From The Market As Second Hand Prices Increase By Up To 200%

2020 flashbacks coming back in full force

Well, I have to agree with the writer, that it's scalpers buying the cards to resell them at higher prices, because we (still) haven't heard of crypto rising again.

They may try to revive the "good old days" of the crypto boom by messing with the supply to increase the price of the cards again but, without crypto farms willing to buy anything, this could (and hopefully will) end quite badly for them.

After all, so far this only affects the used market and mostly Nvidia, with AMD cards readily available during the BF deals at excellent prices (in the US). And let's be honest here: who the F is going to buy a used 3080Ti for $1200 when you can get an overpriced 4080 FE, that's superior in any way, for that amount of money?

I hope it blows up in their faces and lose everything.

Oh! I remember the undervolting posts and even articles (I recall Tom's Hardware doing an article about it) of Vega and Fury cards. Those were bad times for AMD.

We need more of those, both for GPUs and now also CPUs.

We really are back to the 2020 days. If you are gonna upgrade whether it be Ampere/RDNA2/Lovelace/RDNA3, I'd suggest picking up a GPU sooner than later. Otherwise be prepared to wait another two years.

Yea same but I do think we are heading towards a repeat of 2020, just at a slower pace. Least Lovelace isn't all that better at mining than Ampere so even if the mining boom happens, it will affect Ampere pricing before it affects Lovelace pricing. I do think if anyone is gonna upgrade to RDNA 2 or Ampere, it's best to do it now than next year and just hunker down until all this settles back to normal.

Ugh! I hate those tariffs because even though it's the US putting them in place and should only affect them, the companies take advantage of the situation and also raise prices here in Europe and elsewehere.

We'll see how it goes. Without miners, the market for overpriced cards becomes a lot smaller. And with new cards being launched at already ridiculous prices, many people will find themselves either going the extra mile to get a high end card, or going to the other end of the spectrum. This could actually hurt the mid and mid-high range cards like the 4070/4060Ti and RX7800/7700 the most.

But we'll see how it goes. Jut becaus some want to speculate, that doesn't mean that they'll succeed.

And well, on a mor epersonal level, my 1070 is still good enough for me. I have no problem playing at less than 60fps or dropping setting to achieve a playable frame rate, so if this sh*t actually hits the fan and goes everywhere, I'll just wait for the next round. After all, I have to upgrade my CPU unless I want to end with a great card that's severly bottlenecked by my old CPU.

Hmm, sounds like I might be waiting for a good while still, because I'm not paying those prices for RTX 3060 GPUs so close to the presumed released of their RTX 40 successors. I might, if I could be sure I wasn't getting a card that could fail any minute due to heavy mining use, but trust is kind of an issue at the moment. Also, at this point I'll be happy with an RTX 4050, I suppose, which hopefully won't be much more expensive than an RTX 3060, which I was originally going for. I've got to admit that I'm tempted, but I've had time to practice patience, so I'm not exactly running out of it just yet. Obviously I hate what's going on with the PC market though...

Unless you want Raytracing right now and can't afford a 4090, there's an easy solution: Buy an AMD GPU. And you'll get much more rasterization performance than you'd get with any even just somewhat similarly-priced NVidia GPU to boot.

Yea any buyers looking for sub $600, I have been largely recommending RDNA 2 as you can typically get a 6800XT for the price of a 3070. For $700-$800sh price class, I have been suggesting 3080 12GB or if possible, 3080 Ti but from what I have seen, the less expensive models of those are largely going out of stock in various places and only the more expensive models are in stock. Anything that's $900sh or higher, I have been suggesting to wait for RDNA 3 unless they are shopping in the 4090 class. (In USD that is)

But overall, it doesn't really matter what we say though. The market seems to want Nvidia regardless of price of value. We have seen Nvidia gain 88% market share in GPU shipments. Hardware unboxed reports that 3080 and above Ampere GPUs are going out of stock and now we see the second hand market for Nvidia GPUs starting to go up in price. Nvidia GPUs have essentially transitioned from gaming focused to content creators, streamers, miners, Ai research along with gamers and such. It sucks though because if priced competitively, Nvidia GPUs would have been the easy recommendation but now, that's no longer the case.

The Thursday news:

SALES /PLAYER COUNT & DEALS

Valve is giving away a Steam Deck every minute of the Game Awards but sign-ups are causing trouble
https://www.pcgamer.com/steam-deck-giveaway-register/
Valve put out an announcement last night on Twitter for an upcoming Steam Deck giveaway. The company will be giving away one 512GB Steam Deck—yep, the more expensive model—for every single minute of The Game Awards broadcast on December 8. It's also a celebration of the "Steam Deck being in stock," (wow, pulling no punches at other hardware manufacturers, there).
All you have to do is register, or, so we thought. There are a few catches, as it turns out. In fact, even people who seemingly meet all the requirements have been running into issues with registration.
Here's how it works, first of all: You register by signing in and clicking the big blue register button on Steam's Deck Drop page. Then, when you watch The Game Awards you've also got to be watching on Steam.tv. Easy, right? You can even set a notification to remind you once you've registered, that will arrive via email or the Steam mobile app. Alternatively you can add it to your calendar, which is nifty.
>> gtotheunit91 has made a thread about it.

The Epic Store gives away two titles:

Next week, they'll give away Saints Row IV Re-Elected and Wildcat Gun Machine.

Steam has two new deals:

Fanatical has launched the Best of Platinum Collection BYOB 2022, with 18 titles to choose for your 2, 3 or 5 games bundle: https://www.fanatical.com/en/pick-and-mix/platinum-collection-build-your-own-bundle.
