The Wolf Among Us: Episode One Mac release delayed by “unforeseen issue”

As you may have noticed, the OS-X version of The Wolf Among Us: Episode One did not release this weekend alongside the PC and Xbox 360 launch. According to an update on the Telltale Games forums, the Mac version ran into an “unforeseen issue” but the developer is working on update and expects it to go live “within the next few days”. That’s also the release window we got for the PlayStation 3 version, which presumably means in this week’s network update. The Wolf Among Us is an interpretation of comic series Fables from the team behind The Walking Dead.

Raindrop should fill that need. It’ll even let you hunt down a friend for good measure.

Comment

We knew Towerfall was on its way to PC. It was originally due out later this year but that plan’s had to change. Instead, the game is now due for a January 2014 release.

The reason for the delay in the PC release is because developer Matt Thorson is working on a huge batch of new content for the game. There’s two new archers and five new towers for a start.

Hands-On: X Rebirth

By Craig Pearson on October 14th, 2013 at 12:00 pm.

There was always going to be a catch when I finally got my hands on X Rebirth. On the evidence of the previous games, I’d need about a week to get myself settled comfortably in the cockpit of Egosoft’s vast space sim, and I was never going to get that. The demo that was sent to me was the Gamescom floor demo, and it wasn’t set up for the sort of game X is. It was ten minutes long. I can’t say I got a true understanding of what it’s like to play Rebirth, but I still managed to explore a little, and discovered that there’s a lot you can do in an open-world in ten minutes.

The secret dice rolls of XCOM: Enemy Within. How Firaxis fudge the numbers

Comment

You've probably done this in XCOM: quicksaved before a risky 10% chance to hit shot, missed, guiltily quickloaded to before you took the shot and tried again. Except it doesn't work. XCOM cleverly saves the seed of its random number generator after every turn, meaning that you'll always get the same result even if you reload a previous save game. There are loopholes of course. You can reload and force the enemy AI to take the same crappy shot you would have taken, knowing that their dice roll will miss and your next one will probably succeed.

In XCOM: Enemy Within, Firaxis are extending an olive branch to these players. The developer has cottoned on to this manipulation of fate and chance and implemented a new menu option for players whose F9 buttons are worn down. It's called 'Save Scum', and it lets you play quicksave god.

That’s what Gaijin Entertainment has been doing for War Thunder. They’ve strapped a bunch of microphones to a load of WW2 era tanks to record every squeak, tick and roar. All in the name of historiacal authenticity.

Nvidia – Next-Gen Visuals Powered By Global Illumination & Flame Effects Rivaling Those Of Deep Down

Why This Season’s Best PC Games Were Built With NVIDIA – And Why There’s a Whole Lot More Coming

Some of the season’s most important PC games have been built with technology developed by NVIDIA.

We have a proud heritage on the PC platform, delivering amazing performance and advanced technologies for gamers. Technologies developed as part of our “The Way It’s Meant To Be Played” program are among the most deployed in the industry.

To keep the momentum going, we’re expanding “The Way It’s Meant To Be Played” – which represents our promise to gamers and developers to make the best game experience possible – with an effort we call GameWorks.

Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, Batman: Arkham Origins, and Call of Duty: Ghosts are all among the new titles built with the help of NVIDIA’s GameWorks program.

We are announcing a special holiday game bundle. Buy our GTX660 or GTX760 and you get a free copy of Assassins Creed IV Black Flag and Splinter Cell Blacklist. If you buy a GTX770, GTX780 or GTX Titan, and we will also include a free copy of Batman: Arkham Origins.

But that’s not all. We’re also offering $50-$100 off the purchase of an NVIDIA SHIELD with your GTX purchase.

This promotion represents our commitment to the PC platform, one we’re extending and expanding with our investment in GameWorks.

We’re also leading the charge to redefine the Android market with high performance gaming devices and games – such as our own SHIELD gaming portable – and building the next generation of cloud gaming services that allow gamers to play what they want, when they want, on whatever device they want.

The Way It’s Meant To Be Built

GameWorks puts NVIDIA’s tools and technologies – and some of our best engineers – into studios building games that push the boundaries of what’s possible.

At its heart are more than 300 world-class NVIDIA engineers, with thousands of years of collective experience, working at the cutting edge of the art and science of gaming.

Over the years, these passionate gamers – who also happen to be some of the best visual effects artists, engineers and computational mathematicians on the planet – have built a sprawling collection of tools that includes visual and physical simulation software development kits, algorithms, engines, and libraries.

Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag uses NVIDIA technologies to create dramatic lighting effects.

GameWorks in Action

We’ve dispatched our engineers to work onsite with top game developers and add effects, fix bugs, tweak performance, and train developers in open standards and work hand-in-hand with our game laboratory.

Here’s a taste of what our team has helped accomplish:

  • Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag will feature God Rays – which allow game makers to paint beams of light that illuminate a scene from above, horizon-based ambient occlusion + (HBAO+) for more detailed and realistic shadows around objects that obstruct rays of light, percentage-closer soft shadows (PCSS) for more lifelike contact hardening shadows, and temporal anti-aliasing (TXAA) for smoother edges.
  • Batman: Arkham Origins is built with support for GPU PhysX for realistic turbulence, particle and cloth effects, NVIDIA Bokeh & Depth of Field technologies for cool camera effects, HBAO+, PCSS, and TXAA.
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts will feature GPU PhysX for more realistic turbulence and particle effects, TXAA, and HBAO+.

As gamers, we couldn’t be prouder of our contribution to these games. They represent still more reasons why our “The Way Its Meant To Be Played,” signature will continue to represent industry leadership and unmatched technical excellence.

http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/articles/the-way-its-meant-to-be-played

Warner Bros. and NVIDIA recently announced a technical partnership that will see Batman: Arkham Origins bolstered with NVIDIA-exclusive effects, features and technologies, creating the definitive Arkham Origins experience. Get all the details and check out our exclusive tech trailer.

First Official AMD Radeon R9 290X Benchmarks

Presumably as a counter to Nvidia’s press event, which is currently happening in Montreal, however, the company is giving me the go-ahead to publish a couple of my results a bit early.

AMD was very specific that the only numbers it’s approving come from BioShock Infinite and Tomb Raider. We’re only able to show you R9 290X compared to GeForce GTX 780, and only at 3840x2160. But despite those limitations, these numbers were run in our lab, on our own equipment.

We could have dialed this one back a bit, but because Tomb Raider moves a little slower, and because this benchmark sequence is both very demanding and highly repeatable, I wasn’t bothered by the R9 290X’s performance, but was impressed by what I was seeing at Ultra HD.

I backed off a bit in BioShock Infinite, although the Very High detail preset still looks great. As you can see, Radeon R9 290X has little trouble posting higher average frame rates yet again. It’s worth noting that these are Fraps-based numbers—in single-GPU configurations, the results from Fraps and FCAT track closely anyway.

There’s not much more I can say at this point, except that I have several cards tested at 3840x2160, and R9 290X doesn’t just do well against the GeForce GTX 780…

With that, I should probably get back to the lab before I get myself into trouble.

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

So based on those limited benchmarks, the 290X is between 10 and 15% faster than a 780.

I can't wait to see the whole reviews... and know the price!
