So the RX 480 is essentially

Dx11 performance is nb but dx12 is where it really shines

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

The 480 is basically on par with the 970 & 390, but at 100 $/€ less.

Also, the decision to go with only 32 ROPs has a negative effect at 1440p and higher resolutions.

Never, ever, buy a piece of electronics at launch. Between scalpers and stores selling them at a higher price because of the high demmand, it's always better to wait at least a couple weeks.

Bad news aside from the RX 480's reviews ...

It still gets trounced by the competitors older parts in terms of geometry performance and that's not where Polaris should be considering AMD's huge advertisement of improved geometry throughput ...

There's also a huge regression in perf/mm^2 which makes me think that they would have had better performance if they ported a cut down Fiji to 14nm instead of making Polaris 10 ...

As I wrote in another thread, I have the sensation that AMD in its reference implementation could have rushed some parts of firmware and drivers, to avoid being again behind schedule, they looked so confident about performance and power consumption and they also have a reputation of slowly but steadily improvin the SW part of their products. Anyhow, inflated launch street prices apart, it looks like AMD managed to deliver again good value for money in the mid-range. It won't shake the market as the hype let us expect, but I'm mnoderately satisfied and expect Polaris performances and power consumption to improve with time and better firmware and drivers, and improved third party implementations compared to AMD reference one.

I posted this on the other 480 thread: AMD has explained the new naming scheme of their cards, including a little surprise

AMD Radeon RX 400 series naming scheme explained

http://videocardz.com/61721/amd-radeon-rx-400-series-naming-scheme-explained

Let’s start with the RX. There are two subseries in Radeon 400 stack, the RX 400 and 400. The RX parts will offer >1.5 TFLOps performance and at least 100 GB/s of memory bandwidth. Those cards that do not offer such performance will not use the RX prefix.

AMD confirmed they will be using XX5 revisions, which basically means we might be seeing faster variants released after time, when yields are better, leakage was minimized, or AMD simply decided to release higher-clocked version. A good example would be Radeon HD 7970 and 7970 GHz Edition (being 2nd revision). Hopefully this will also mean less rebrands.

Will we get an RX 485 in 6 months with better power consumption and/or higher clocks?

KILLING TIME AT LIGHTSPEED IS A SOCIAL MEDIA TEXT ADVENTURE IN SPACE

http://www.pcgamer.com/killing-time-at-lightspeed-is-a-social-media-text-adventure-in-space/

Time dilation is a regularly visited theme in science fiction. If you’ve seen Interstellar, or read Joe Haldeman’s Forever War, you’ll know that it refers to the passage of time in space travel being slower than it is on Earth. In Forever War, for example, people go to war for a couple of Earth years, but during the time spent en route to other planets, many decades pass.
