MODS, EMULATORS & FAN PROJECTS

Silksong already has 2 multiplayer mods, and we're not even a week in yet
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/silksong-already-has-2-multiplayer-mods-and-were-not-even-a-week-in-yet/
Silksong making a mockery of you? Are you gnashing your teeth, clenching your fists, almost snapping the controller in two as Moorwing reduces you to a thin red paste for the 78th time (there's a skip for that, you know)? Why not bring a pal? Just to be clear: it won't actually help. They'll just be there for moral support. But maybe that'll help as you bear down on death #79?
Yep, less than one week after release, and Silksong already has a multiplayer mod. Actually, it has two of them: SilklessCoop by nek5 and Silksong Steam multiplayer mod by XvX. Following in the footsteps of Hollow Knight multiplayer mods like HKMP, both these mods let you team up with a pal as you roam Pharloom.
But before your head fills with visions of ganging up on bosses, some bad news: they both seem to be pretty much visual-only, at least for now. That is to say, you can have another Hornet hang out in your world (and vice versa), but I don't think you're gonna be taking on enemies together. The Silksong Steam multiplayer mod promises "you can do basic PvP," but that's not shown off in the one and only video its author has uploaded, so I'd take it with a grain of salt.
Even so, I think it's incredibly impressive. We're just five days out from Silksong crashing Steam and multiple other storefronts with a tsunami of enthusiasm, and the black magic mods are already here. Hell, XvX even implies in their mod description that they'd have gotten it done sooner, but they got distracted by Delta Force.
As you might expect, the setup process for this kind of thing is a tad intricate. Nek5's mod requires you to download the BepInEx 5 Unity patcher, the software to host a server, and has not one but three distinct sets of instructions depending on the precise nature of your hosting setup. XvX's instructions are simpler but, to be honest, I wonder if a lot of complexity isn't being elided there.
>> The article only has one screenshot, that doesn’t show much.

If Silksong's corpse runs and double damage hits are too demanding, here's a pair of mods to tone down the difficulty just a notch
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/if-silksongs-corpse-runs-and-double-damage-hits-are-too-demanding-heres-a-pair-of-mods-to-tone-down-the-difficulty-just-a-notch/
I'm as capable at 2D platforming and combat as I am at actual jumping and feats of arms: There's a lot of flailing involved and it's unpleasant for anyone watching. So while I expected Silksong to kick my ass, the Hollow Knight sequel has proven itself surprisingly brutal even for those who've beaten Team Cherry's previous work.
Thankfully, those of us playing on PC have the tools at hand to redraw the line between "challenging" and "excruciating" in a more comfortable position. If Silksong's expecting more from you than you want to give, here's a pair of mods that can soften some of the sharpest pain points.
Quick disclaimer: Both mods require version 5.4.23.3 of the BepInEx plugin framework. To install it, grab the x64 .zip from the Github repo and extract to Silksong's installation directory. You'll need to run the game once to generate necessary config files. Then, to install either of the mods below, just place their associated .dll file in the /BepInEx/plugins folder in your Silksong directory.

https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/pc-gaming-show-will-be-broadcasting-a-new-dedicated-direct-during-the-tokyo-game-show-2025/
The PC Gaming Show is coming to Tokyo, for the Tokyo Game Show 2025, with a "new dedicated show" that'll air on Sunday, September 28, 2025 at 9 am PT / 12 noon ET / 5 pm BST / and 1 am JST.
"The PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct will spotlight some of the best upcoming games on PC, with publishers such as SEGA, Devolver Digital and Nightdive Studios already confirmed to appear," a press release says. "Expect exclusive trailers, news from the showfloor, must-see developer interviews and world exclusive announcements", hosted by TV presenter and host Elle Osili Wood and PC Gamer's own Midas Whittaker.

Gearbox boss says Borderlands 4 day-one patch 'does a lot' but warns that players should have 'realistic' expectations about performance: 'Older hardware may not provide buttery smooth performance'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/gearbox-boss-says-borderlands-4-day-one-patch-does-a-lot-but-warns-that-players-should-have-realistic-expectations-about-performance-older-hardware-may-not-provide-buttery-smooth-performance/
Borderlands 4 is now just a few days away—here's the full rundown of global release times—and Randy Pitchford has confirmed, in what should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone, that there will be a day one patch. It "does a lot," the Gearbox boss promised, but it's not going to work miracles, and he said players with low-end PCs should have "realistic expectations" for how the game will run on their rigs.
>> I am realistic, and I expect the game to run well enough on the required minimum specs they asked for.

Keanu Reeves would 'love to play Johnny Silverhand again' in Cyberpunk 2—but that'd be a tough needle to thread with how the first game ends
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/keanu-reeves-would-love-to-play-johnny-silverhand-again-in-cyberpunk-2-but-thatd-be-a-tough-needle-to-thread-with-how-the-first-game-ends/
In a recent interview with IGN, Keanu Reeves offered a spark of hope that he may return as foul-mouthed rockerboy Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2, the currently in preproduction follow-up to Cyberpunk 2077. This is far from a confirmation, though, and the original game's many ending permutations complicate the character's potential return.

WotC president says he'd 'love to have' a new Dungeons & Dragons MMO, but it would have to 'rethink what an MMO is in this day and age'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/mmo/wotc-president-says-hed-love-to-have-a-new-dungeons-and-dragons-mmo-but-it-would-have-to-rethink-what-an-mmo-is-in-this-day-and-age/
In a post-Baldur's Gate 3 world, it's unclear what the future holds for Dungeons & Dragons videogames. Contributing least to that clarity is Hasbro itself, which in recent years has laid off the team that handled D&D licensing with Larian, canceled at least five D&D games that were in the works, and has generally bungled a franchise that millions would otherwise be eager to enjoy.
Wizards of the Coast, at least, evidently has ambitions. In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, WotC president John Hight says the publisher is once again looking forward to new D&D projects—projects that might eventually overlap with his history as Warcraft general manager.

'Do you think there would be a problem if we see Hitler's penis?' MachineGames considered having a full frontal Fuhrer in Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus

In the second episode of Noclip's documentary series on MachineGames, some of its senior developers revealed a surprising tidbit left on the cutting room floor of Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus. The devs considered giving us a gander at the tallywhacker of Adolf Hitler. Spoilers for New Colossus to follow.

Loot boxes could be coming to Marvel Rivals as a dataminer finds evidence of 'multiple references to mystery box logic', and like always, players are divided

Word on the street is that Marvel Rivals has plans for loot boxes after a dataminer uncovered evidence of mystery box logic while trawling Season 4's files. There's no official confirmation yet, but the speculation is enough to divide players.

Final Fantasy 14 director Yoshi-P says the long-awaited job redesign will change things, but also won't—which doesn't clear much of anything up
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/final-fantasy/final-fantasy-14-director-yoshi-p-says-the-long-awaited-job-redesign-will-change-things-but-also-wont-which-doesnt-clear-much-of-anything-up/
Final Fantasy 14, as we've often observed on this very site, has a bit of a design problem when it comes to its jobs—they're pretty stale. Tanks mostly play the same, healers get like two damage buttons, DPS all try to shove their buttons into the same two-minute window: It's a little droll.
For a while, game director Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) has promised that this'll be changing in 8.0, FF14's next expansion. Back in 2024, he stated: "By strongly differentiating the jobs, we will be able to reach the goal we have set ourselves." It is now 2025, however, and a recent PCGamesN interview from Gamescom is casting doubt.

'The shining star of losers everywhere' who inspired one of Umamusume's most popular horse girls has passed away
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/sim/the-shining-star-of-losers-everywhere-who-inspired-one-of-umamusumes-most-popular-horse-girls-has-passed-away/
It's a sad day for horse girl enjoyers everywhere. Japaneses racehorse Haru Urara—dubbed "the shining star of losers everywhere" and whose personality and storyline was transformed into an anime horse waifu in Umamusume: Pretty Derby—has passed away at the age of 29.
>> Sometimes I get to share some weird ass news.

'What a slap in the face': Battlefield 2042 players are raging about the 'Road to Battlefield 6' battle pass after a purchasable tier skip function is added
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/what-a-slap-in-the-face-battlefield-2042-players-are-raging-about-the-road-to-battlefield-6-battle-pass-after-a-purchasable-tier-skip-function-is-added/
Ever since the Battlefield 6 beta weekends ended, there's been a defib-sized hole in my heart. While we don't have long to wait now for the official release, there are still some players out there, like me, trying to find ways to scratch the itch, and many have landed in Battlefield 2042.
Battlefield 2042 is by no means the most beloved game in the series, but it is the latest instalment and therefore has the most recent content and regular updates. But to entice players to give it another chance, DICE added a 'Road to Battlefield 6' battle pass, which is full of cosmetics that will carry over to Battlefield 6 on launch. It sounds good, but it wasn't without its issues.

Tariffs play a role in that price, obviously, but it's still stupidly expensive. MSoft and Asus sure must be very pleased with Lenovo for giving them even more of the handheld PC market.

I'm also sure that both MSoft and Sony will pay close attention to how these machines sell, to gauge the limit of the market for their next gen handheld devices.

Steam mega-update ends our long national game-sorting nightmare, adds CPU temp measuring, and a gajillion other bullet points
https://www.pcgamer.com/software/platforms/steam-mega-update-ends-our-long-national-game-sorting-nightmare-adds-cpu-temp-measuring-and-a-gajillion-other-bullet-points/
Of the many challenges facing our home, the good ship planet Earth, surely none is greater than the fact our Steam libraries won't organise themselves properly. If you own the Assassin's Creed or Yakuza games, you know what I'm talking about: Steam's rigid alphabetisation of your library means that series are presented out of order. For instance, Yakuza Kiwami (which is Yakuza 1) comes after Yakuza 6, and Assassin's Creed Odyssey comes before AC Origins.
Psychological torture. But our long national nightmare is over: as of September 9th's Steam mega-update, the client has a new feature to put an end to it. "Added a Customization tab to game properties," read the patch notes. "The Customization tab allows users to view and set custom artwork for the game and set a custom sort title that will be used instead of the actual title when sorting games in the library."
In other words, you can now set what is effectively a hidden name for all your games that Steam will use to sort them. So I could label the 12 Assassin's Creed games in my library as Assassin's Creed 1 through 12 to have them display in proper release order*, but the display names of the games themselves in my library wouldn't change—they'd still be called Odyssey, Origins, and what-have-you.
Look, I don't doubt that a lot of you don't see the big deal here, but for a certain kind of deeply unwell person, this is the biggest thing to happen all year.
Fevered convolutions of my brain aside, the September 9 Steam update brings a lot more changes than just the game-ordering stuff. That Steam performance overlay CPU temp measurer (the one that needs a kernel-mode driver on Windows to work, which you can opt out of) is now out of beta, for instance. So too is the fix that makes the performance overlay not get stumped by DLSS frame-gen. That aside, shoutout to everyone who can now filter their private games into dynamic collections or filtered views in their library. Now you can better organise all those games you're deeply ashamed of (Deus Ex: The Fall and whatnot, I assume). You can find a full list of changes below; I've bolded the stuff that leaps out to me as worth caring about.

MODS, EMULATORS & FAN PROJECTS

Red Dead Redemption 2 modder says to hell with your realistic western cowboy fantasy, get horse girl pilled instead
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/red-dead-redemption-2-modder-says-to-hell-with-your-realistic-western-cowboy-fantasy-get-horse-girl-pilled-instead/
Red Dead Redemption 2 put an absurd amount of work into making its horses as realistic as possible—thousands of animations, tons of research, testicle physics—and I'm about to undo all of that by turning them into Umamusume: Pretty Derby anime horse girls.
That's thanks to the (frankly heroic) work of JohnTanner1899, who's been slowly trickling in a number of mods over the last several months, turning everything from noble steeds to NPCs into some of Tracen Academy's finest racers.
JohnTanner1899 was even ahead of the global Umamusume sweep, publishing a mod that replaces a male NPC with Tamamo Cross back at the beginning of March. Since then, they've also created mods for the likes of Aston Machan, which replaces the model for Mary-Beth Gaskill, Almond Eye who takes the spot of Sadie Adler, and Taiki Shuttle who becomes the very horse itself.
Kitasan Black is also available—though I literally cannot figure out if or what she's supposed to replace—while if your fishing rod isn't quite umapyoi enough for your liking, it looks like you can simply straight up swap it out for Cheval Grand instead.
Why? I honestly have no idea. Why do modders do anything? JohnTanner1899 doesn't really offer up any reason—in fact, their mod descriptions are so brief half of them don't even mention what they actually do—but I do find it slightly funny that a machine translation of the Cheval Grand mod notes that they prefer the "old Italian Western style of Redemption 1 to the Yellowstone style of Redemption 2." I'm not sure chucking anime versions of real-life Japanese racehorses in there will do anything to help that.
>> The article has two screenshots, more than enough to see how weird this mod makes the game.

The Wednesday news, part two:

Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya throws down the gauntlet, says if Hideo Kojima doesn't make another PT, 'Maybe I'll give it a go'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/horror/bayonetta-director-hideki-kamiya-throws-down-the-gauntlet-says-if-hideo-kojima-doesnt-make-another-pt-maybe-ill-give-it-a-go/
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: No game that actually exists can ever measure up to the games that got killed before they were released. Prey 2? Fallout Van Buren? Neither came out, so they get to exist in the realm of imagination forever, perfect and beautiful.
The most recent king of the genre is, I reckon, PT—Hideo Kojima's playable teaser (get it?) for the now-cancelled Silent Hills, made in collaboration with Guillermo del Toro. Konami has effectively obliterated all trace of the game from existence, but that doesn't mean people don't reflect wistfully on what could have been.
People like, for instance, Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya (via IGN), who recently returned to one of his year-old threads on X to throw down the gauntlet over the game (kind of, in a very polite interpretation of throwing down a gauntlet). Per IGN's translation of the original Japanese, Kamiya wrote, "If it’s impossible to resurrect PT, Kojima should make a new game in the same style… If Kojima doesn't do it, maybe I'll give it a go."

In a world of cursed videogame collaborations, Genshin Impact being in Among Us might be a top contender
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/survival-crafting/in-a-world-of-cursed-videogame-collaborations-genshin-impact-being-in-among-us-might-be-a-top-contender/
Nope, it's not a trick of the eye: Genshin Impact is making its way into Among Us. I don't know either.
It's somehow not even the most cursed gacha game matchup to happen in recent months—Infinity Nikki just wrapped up a rather drama-mired Stardew Valley collab, and gooner gacha Nikke is about to have Jill Valentine all caked up to fight some Raptures—but I'm still not sure how I feel about seeing a tiny little crewmate all uwu'd up.

Pacific Drive's first major expansion leans heavy into horror by introducing a cult of 'anomaly-obsessed fanatics'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/survival-crafting/pacific-drives-first-major-expansion-leans-heavy-into-horror-by-introducing-a-cult-of-anomaly-obsessed-fanatics/
If it's been a minute since you drove your trusty patchwork station wagon through Pacific Drive's exclusion zone, here's a great reason to gas up for another run. The driving survival game is getting its first major expansion, called Whispers in the Woods, and as you can see in the trailer above, it's spooky as heck.

Halls of Torment's DLC is the only expansion I care about this year, and it's now got a release date
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/halls-of-torments-dlc-is-the-only-expansion-i-care-about-this-year-and-its-now-got-a-release-date/
Well, that was quick. A little over a week since I last brought you the joyous news that Halls of Torment—2024's true game of the year—would be getting a meaty new DLC and free update at some point before the end of the year, the devs have gone and announced exactly when in a post on Steam.

Helldivers 2 isn't getting a social hub, Arrowhead CEO says it's 'on the feature list for the next one,' but the studio's next game is not Helldivers 3

Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani has mentioned that the studio's next game will not be Helldivers 3, on his way to answering a routine question about a social hub (thanks, GR+). This is not the first time that a potential sequel to the live service smash has been floated: back in July, Jorjani talked about how healthy Helldivers 2 is and added "HD3 is hopefully many years away."

Maybe release a game in May sometimes? 'Fixation on the holiday window' is hurting game publishers, says industry analyst Newzoo
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/holiday-window-newzoo-2025-global-games-market-report/
The arrival of Hollow Knight: Silksong and Borderlands 4 marks the end of this year's summer doldrums, a period from around April through the end of August when the rate of big-budget and highly-anticipated mainstream game releases is at its lowest.
Lots of great games still release during this period, but the kinds of games that top Steam's wishlist chart tend to cluster at the beginning and end of the year, especially in February and October.
This is a mistake, according to videogame market intelligence company Newzoo. In the free edition of the firm's 2025 Global Games Market Report, available today, Newzoo says that game publishers are causing "avoidable cannibalization" by all competing for attention and money at the same time of year.

Silksong Easter egg hides a secret, super-hard permadeath mode, for those who want to suffer even more
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/silksong-easter-egg-hides-a-secret-super-hard-permadeath-mode-for-those-who-want-to-suffer-even-more/
Hollow Knight: Silksong will get a little easier next week with the release of the game's first patch, which among other things promises a "slight difficulty reduction in early game bosses Moorwing and Sister Splinter." But what if, for some demented reason, you wanted to make the game harder? As it turns out, that's on the menu too, and you don't even have to wait for it.

Watch: Destiny 2's next Star Wars-themed expansion has a Sarlacc pit, twirling light sabers, AT-ST walkers and—oh boy—Han Solo's blaster

Say what you like about Bungie's current struggles (and we have), the studio really does give good ViDoc. This morning, as part of an hour-long livestream, Destiny 2 players got their first substantial look at Renegades, the Star Wars-themed expansion that's set to drop on December 2. And if you're wondering just how much Star Wars has been ingested by Bungie's design team, at various points in the video we see a character frozen in carbonite, off-brand AT-ST walkers stomping across the battlefield, and a Sarlacc pit on Mars (which is doubling for Tatooine). Of course there is also much twirling of light sabers.

Battlefield 6 producer acknowledges vehicles were underpowered in the beta, but says it's better than the alternative: 'Rather have too weak vehicles over too powerful'

You know something is off in Battlefield when piloting a multi-million dollar metal box with a building-leveling cannon mounted on the end is a bigger risk than hoofing it across the map.
That was the state of last month's Battlefield 6 beta: tanks, helicopters, jets, and especially jeeps could never get much room to vroom before getting blasted by any number of anti-armor rockets, laser-guided missiles, stationary cannons, mines, or sticky explosives.
A month ahead of launch, we have our first acknowledgement from DICE that vehicle balance needs work via lead producer David Sirland.

I nearly gave myself blisters playing Silksong, so I've taken a break to be a mail delivery turnip with a 'big juicy bum'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/adventure/i-nearly-gave-myself-blisters-playing-silksong-so-ive-taken-a-break-to-be-a-mail-delivery-turnip-with-a-big-juicy-bum/
I've been playing Silksong this week—a lot of Silksong. So much Silksong, in fact, I've nearly developed two blisters on my right hand. This happened once before when I got really hyperfocused on learning an Elphelt combo in Guilty Gear: Strive. The things we do for dopamine.
Anyway, I've prescribed myself one "play a game that doesn't hurt your hands", and I've landed on Letters to Arralla—an adorable upcoming game by Little Pink Clouds where you play a turnip with a fat ass. Also, you have mail to deliver. I technically should've led with that, the butt is entirely secondary.

The creator of Dead Space 'would love to make an Alien game'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/horror/the-creator-of-dead-space-would-love-to-make-an-alien-game/
Dead Space, along with so much sci-fi horror, probably wouldn't exist without Alien. Ridley Scott set the bar high, and for close to 50 years the xenomorph's first outing has informed what people want and expect from their cosmic nightmares.
So it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that Dead Space creator and The Callisto Protocol director Glen Schofield would be up for taking a crack at the series—though he'd rather create more original games.

NVIDIA Showcases Why Buying Its AI Servers Delivers a Higher ROI Than Even ‘Free’ GPUs: “The More You Buy, the More You Save”

Good old Jensen and his slides.

IIRC, based on quarterly statements, Nvidia's revenue is a few times higher than all of the genAI companies and subsidiaries combined.
