As the Nintendo eShop fails to protect from 'eslop', indie devs reflect on how it affects their work and why Steam is just better: 'Their algorithm will more or less naturally bury AI slop'
https://www.pcgamer.com/software/platforms/as-the-nintendo-eshop-fails-to-protect-from-eslop-indie-devs-reflect-on-how-it-affects-their-work-and-why-steam-is-just-better-their-algorithm-will-more-or-less-naturally-bury-ai-slop/
Nintendo recently rolled out a bunch of new eShop publishing guidelines for the Switch 2. While these are just applicable in Asia right now, there are some indie devs hoping that the changes will make their way over to other markets as they scramble for ways to make their games stand out from all the eslop that's clogging up the pipes.
The guidelines now restrict how bundles can be sold, how product information can be updated, and using inaccurate product descriptions. All of these methods can be used to spam eShop listings or try to profit off the success of other games, by copying the name or claiming the game is something similar when it's not.
Talking to IGN (via GamesRadar), some developers voiced their frustrations about the Nintendo eShop and how it can't stand up to other platforms like Steam: "Their algorithm will more or less naturally bury AI slop or very low-effort releases. Sure, not every 'good indie' rises as high as they should, but the visibility situation for indies with no marketing budget is significantly better on Steam. It gives you a shot when you release.
MODS, EMULATORS & FAN PROJECTS
Star Wars: Republic Commando RTX Remix Demo Released
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/star-wars-republic-commando-rtx-remix-demo-released/
Star Wars fans, here is something really special for you today. Republic Commando is considered by many as one of the best Star Wars games. And today, we present you with a new cool RTX Remix Mod that adds Path Tracing to it.
Made by Chaos007, this is an early demo of an RTX Remix Mod that adds Path Tracing to this classic Star Wars game. The demo includes the prologue and the first level of the first mission. It features ray-traced lighting, better textures, improved 3D models, and a more cinematic look and feel.
The demo features overhauled clone and droid designs, new weapon models, PBR materials, updated sky lighting, and enhanced visual effects like emissive particles and reflective surfaces.
To showcase these visual improvements, the modder shared some screenshots. These images compare the original version of the game with the new modded version. As you can see, the RTX Remix version looks miles better. This proves how much Path Tracing can improve the look of older games.
>> The article has some screenshots and a video, but it lacks the link to the demo. Thankfully, the video will lead you to ModDB.
Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast RTX Remix Demo Released
https://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/star-wars-jedi-knight-ii-jedi-outcast-rtx-remix-demo-released/
A couple of hours ago, we shared an RTX Remix Mod for Star Wars: Republic Commando. And now, here is another Path Tracing Mod for another beloved Star Wars game.
Developed by Raven, Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast is a Star Wars game that features both first-person and third-person modes. This game came out on PC in 2002, and it’s the sequel to 1997’s Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. Now, what’s interesting here is that Jedi Outcast uses OpenGL. So, this appears to be the first RTX Remix Mod for a game that uses the OpenGL API.
For those unaware, RTX Remix does not support OpenGL. However, to make this game work, modder ArjaanAuinger used the QindieGL wrapper and heavy config file customization. So, this could open up the doors for more RTX Remix Mods for games that use OpenGL. And you know the number 1 game that uses OpenGL and needs an RTX Remix Mod, right? RIGHT?
Since this is a tech demo, it adds Path Tracing to only one level. So, don’t expect to play the entire Jedi Outcast with Path Tracing. This is an early tech demo and nothing more. Still, this might be something that will interest our Star Wars fans.
Do note that the mod has a number of visual issues. It will also be heavy on your GPU. The modder claims that you should expect around 50FPS at 1080p on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070. Again, this is a tech demo. It’s not as polished as the RTX Remix Mod for Star Wars: Republic Commando. Still, I’m amazed to see an RTX Remix Mod for an OpenGL game.
>> This article does have the link to the mod and also two videos.
OptiScaler has been updated to theoretically support AMD's FSR 4 in all games with upscaling that don't use Vulcan or anti-cheat—which is nice, but why the heck doesn't AMD do this?
https://www.pcgamer.com/hardware/graphics-cards/optiscaler-has-been-updated-to-theoretically-support-amds-fsr-4-in-all-games-with-upscaling-that-dont-use-vulcan-or-anti-cheat-which-is-nice-but-why-the-heck-doesnt-amd-do-this/
When it comes to image quality, the latest FSR 4 iteration of its upscaling technology definitely made AMD highly competitive with Nvidia's DLSS. But game support? Not so much. Which is why the OptiScaler tool is so handy. And so vexing when it comes to AMD itself.
OptiScaler has been updated so that it now effectively supports running AMD's FSR 4 in any game that supports DLSS 2+ or FSR 2+ and doesn't use the Vulcan API or anti-cheat technology.
Of course, the caveat is that you need a GPU based on AMD's latest RDNA 4 tech, such as the Radeon RX 9070 XT, to run FSR 4 at all. Oh, there's another caveat. For switching on FSR 4 with OptiScaler, it takes more than just a couple of mouse clicks.
In fact, for FSR 4 you have to manually install it by copy-pasting files into specific game directories, different for each title, with further settings to adjust upon install per game via a bat script.
Still, if the modding community can do it, even in this somewhat user unfriendly format, the question is why AMD can't. The official list of titles that support FSR 4 can be found here. And, frankly, it is not impressive. There are 65 titles, total, and the majority are hardly AAA classics.
