If you've been following the general discussions around Assassin's Creed Shadows, you'll have probably noticed—if you've had the stomach for it—a great deal of fury about the game's lead characters. From Elon Musk taking swings for some unfathomable reason, to over-placating apologies from the company itself, to the game's subreddit having to instate new rules to get people to please shut up about it, it's been a headache and a half.
Speaking at a BAFTA event (thanks, Eurogamer) in London, franchise head Marc-Alexis Coté has given Ubisoft's biggest outright condemnation of this behaviour so far. (...)

I find it bunny, because PCGamer is very used to just censoring their viewers on a whim, especially when it comes to politics discussion where they just straight up lock their comment sections beforehand, allowing them to spark off controversy and shit on their viewers, but not allow their viewers to call them out on their shit.

Also it's not really "self censoring", they literally pissed off Japan and other people from different walks of life. To say that those people do not matter and that the company only matters is just out of touch selfish behaviour, like that of a child who refuses to say sorry for doing/saying something bad.

Both game journos and Ubisoft need to get to grips with reality and stop painting the ppl they piss off on purpose as the villains. It's fucking stupid, childish and makes me wish for bankruptcy faster than ever before (because that seems to be the only way to teach a lesson these days).

Edit: oh look at that, PCGamer locked their own comments section for that thread. The hypocrisy is fucking real.

SOFTWARE & DRIVERS

Steam Game Recording is now available for everyone, and it's packed with neat features
https://www.pcgamer.com/software/platforms/steam-game-recording-is-now-available-for-everyone-and-its-packed-with-neat-features/
If today is remembered for anything it'll be this: Steam Game Recording has exited beta and is now available for all users, edging Steam towards becoming the one gaming app that does everything. The new functionality isn't just a simpler way to record gameplay footage: it has editing too, as well as a useful-looking marker system.
There's a timeline attached to each recording, along which users can add their own markers on-the-go so that important or interesting or controversial moments can be easily watched later. Developers will be able to implement "game-added" markers too, meaning important milestones in a game can be easily earmarked for later viewing. It recalls the way Xbox and PlayStation consoles automatically screenshot every achievement / trophy earned.
Recording modes include background and on-demand: the former will record to a user-specified duration or storage limit, while the latter is toggled off and on at will. Replay functionality is easily accessible in the Steam overlay for super-quick reference, and of course, you'll be able to clip and crop to your heart's desire and easily share with other Steam users (or export and send further afield as an .mp4, if you want).
Since this functionality works via the Steam overlay you can use it for every Steam game, and the functionality is already fully integrated with the Steam Deck. You can even use it for non-Steam games. Conveniently, the recording only captures the relevant game window, so your desktop (and thus your well-hidden obsession with troll dolls) won't be revealed.

Bloodborne looks cool as a top-down game in Unreal Engine 5
https://www.dsogaming.com/videotrailer-news/bloodborne-looks-cool-as-an-top-down-game-in-unreal-engine-5/
Now here is something really cool. For the past year, Maxime Foulquier has been working on a remake of Bloodborne in Unreal Engine 5. Although that project looked promising, Foulquier has basically stopped working on it due to fear or a copyright claim. However, yesterday, he shared a video, showcasing Bloodborne as a top-down game.
Contrary to his fan remake of Bloodborne in UE5, this project is currently in active development. And, as you will see, it looks really cool.
My guess is that it’s easier to replace assets in this top-down game in case Sony sends him a C&D letter. And, let’s be realistic here. If this video goes viral, Sony will immediately take it down.
In a really weird way, this top-down take on Bloodborne looks great. I’d never imagined Bloodborne as a top-down title. However, here we are with a video that makes it look cool.

Cyberpunk 2077 just got a fully-featured and comprehensive Urban Survival Immersion Μod
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/cyberpunk-2077-just-got-a-fully-featured-and-comprehensive-urban-survival-immersion-μod/
Modder ‘Dark Fortune Teller’ has just released an amazing mod for Cyberpunk 2077, called Dark Future. Dark Future is a fully-featured and comprehensive Urban Survival, Gameplay, and Immersion Mod. This mod will completely change the way you play CDPR’s title. So, let’s take a closer look at it.
Dark Future adds to the game features like Basic Needs, Injury, and Addiction. So, for instance, you’ll now have to stay hydrated. You’ll also have to look out for your energy and your nutrition.
The primary mechanic of Dark Future is Nerve, which represents how calm and collected you are. When Nerve is low your breathing becomes rapid, your hands tremble when aiming, and Stamina takes longer to begin recovering. When Nerve is very low, you will become too nauseous to eat and drink, and too restless to sleep. If Nerve reaches 0, you will suffer a fatal heart attack. Also note that Nerve is the only Basic Need that can kill you. So, make sure to keep that in mind.
Nerve will be lost rapidly when exposed to stress. For instance, being in combat or traced from Quickhacks while undetected will lower it. You can replenish your Nerve by engaging in relaxing activities, or by consuming certain substances.
Dark Future introduces four Basic Needs. These are Nerve, Hydration, Nutrition, and Energy. You’ll see them represented on the HUD as meters just below the Health and Stamina bars. They show and hide based on context, just like Health and Stamina.
Players will also need to periodically return to one of their Hideouts to recover. Showering, dancing, spending time with a romantic interest, and other relaxing activities are the best (and healthiest) ways to restore Nerve.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard's first mods fulfil the creators' true intention of letting you play as Nigel Thornberry, but spit on all that is good and decent by making everything less magenta
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/dragon-age/dragon-age-the-veilguards-first-mods-fulfil-the-creators-true-intention-of-letting-you-play-as-nigel-thornberry-but-spit-on-all-that-is-good-and-decent-by-making-everything-less-magenta/
There's a hot new RPG out that's like a neodymium magnet for discourse, and you know what that means: time for me to bunker down and replay 2010's Red Dead Redemption until all this blows over. But if you are one of the many, many players currently knee-deep in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, I've got good news: the mods are already rolling in.
>> The article talks about mods from past entries of DA, but only has two for it: one to remove the purple haze and a character swap to play as Nigel Thornberry.

In the wake of Nuketown, Treyarch gears up to tackle players’ biggest issue with Black Ops 6: The map pools
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/call-of-duty/in-the-wake-of-nuketown-treyarch-gears-up-to-tackle-players-biggest-issue-with-black-ops-6-the-map-pools/

Don't expect a big Mass Effect reveal this week: BioWare says N7 Day will be 'quieter' than previous years
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/dont-expect-a-big-mass-effect-reveal-this-week-bioware-says-n7-day-will-be-quieter-than-previous-years/
We know BioWare is working on a new Mass Effect game: It's been teasing it since at least 2021 with cryptic tweets and video clips that, for some of us, have led more to aggravation than anticipation. Given all that, and the fact that Dragon Age: The Veilguard is now out in the wild, some fans are no doubt hoping that the next N7 Day, which is now nearly upon us, will serve up some sort of proper reveal. Alas, it almost certainly will not.
"We hope everyone is enjoying their time in Dragon Age: The Veilguard," BioWare posted on X. "It’s only a few days until N7 Day and this year will be quieter because of launch. Be sure to check back then for a little fun, though!"

Two months after the disastrous Seekers of the Storm expansion, Gearbox details its Risk of Rain 2 rescue plan, and players are actually pretty excited

A little more than two months after releasing Seekers of the Storm, its first expansion for Risk of Rain 2, Gearbox Software has shared its plan for the long-term future of the expansion, which it hopes will "build Seekers of the Storm into something that can be celebrated by the community for years to come."

A remake of strategy classic Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 has proven divisive among its fanbase
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/strategy/a-remake-of-strategy-classic-romance-of-the-three-kingdoms-8-has-proven-divisive-among-its-fanbase/
Romance of the Three Kingdoms (RT3K) is a sprawling strategy series that has changed immensely over the four decades of entries Koei, now Koei Tecmo, has released since 1985. For its vast panoply of characters and broad gameplay where you focus on a single person as your own avatar, 2001's Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 is particularly fondly remembered not just in the series stronghold of East Asia but in the West because it got a proper release on PlayStation. The recently released remake of RT3K 8, however, is catching fan flak for being less of a remaster that respects the original and more of a remake that tries to bring in elements from the series' more recent releases.
>> Fits with the discussion Darc Requiem and I had yesterday about Dragon Age.

There's a Halo 2 nostalgia party going on in Halo Infinite and you're invited
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/theres-a-halo-2-nostalgia-party-going-on-in-halo-infinite-and-youre-invited/
When Halo Studios (formerly 343) announced this year that it was moving on from Halo Infinite to focus on what's next, I took that as a sign that the days of significant Infinite updates were coming to a close. To a degree that's been the case—the free-to-play Halo that finally became great last year slowed down in 2024, with recent seasons consisting mostly of forgettable cosmetics and (much appreciated) maps made by the community.
Infinite's latest season, The Great Journey, has some actual weight behind it. In honor of Halo 2's 20th birthday, the studio commissioned seven throwback Halo 2 maps from the community and put together a playlist with a 2004 ruleset. Oh, and there's a new gun: The MA5K Avenger, a rapid-fire variant of the assault rifle that fills the role of the SMG (a gun that first appeared in Halo 2). Similar to last year's Halo 3 Game Fuel celebration, the Infinite scene is one big nostalgia fest right now, and dammit, it's working its magic on me again.

It sure looks like a Warcraft 2 remaster just leaked ahead of next week's anniversary event
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/strategy/it-sure-looks-like-a-warcraft-2-remaster-just-leaked-ahead-of-next-weeks-anniversary-event/
Blizzard appears to have let the orc out of the bag a week early: ahead of its planned Warcraft Direct celebrating 30 years of its most famous series, a logo for Warcraft 2: Remastered has appeared on its internal servers.

The ex-GTA lead whose blog got the kibosh from Rockstar chats San Andreas' worst bug and why 'anything that isn't visible to players tends to have swearing in it'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/grand-theft-auto/the-ex-gta-lead-whose-blog-got-the-kibosh-from-rockstar-chats-san-andreas-worst-bug-and-why-anything-that-isnt-visible-to-players-tends-to-have-swearing-in-it/
The original GTA trilogy on PC—not the biffed-up Definitive Edition of 2021—is still the best way to play those games. Not least because of fan projects like SilentPatch, a mod that fixes a whole bunch of bugs and errors still left over in Rockstar's PS2-era opuses (opi?), and that got a meaty ol' update just over a week ago.
In fact, it's such a good patch that it's earned the endorsement of Obbe Vermeij (via GamesRadar), former Rockstar technical director who worked in that role on GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, 4, and several handheld games. "Games have bugs and GTA is no exception," Vermeij wrote. "If you want to play the original games I would recommend installing SilentPatch."
>> Welp. I’m sure Rockstar will take that well and not try to shut down SilentPatch at all...

If you're using any kind of stagger build in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, do this side quest for the Lords of Fortune right away to get a best-in-slot ring
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/dragon-age/if-youre-using-any-kind-of-stagger-build-in-dragon-age-the-veilguard-do-this-side-quest-for-the-lords-of-fortune-right-away-to-get-a-best-in-slot-ring/
If you've been theorycrafting in Dragon Age: The Veilguard any, you'll probably have come to the same realisation I have. Most builds in the game can be split into two categories: Make stuff hurt, or stagger them. Weapons in particular seem evenly split between offering damage values or huge stagger numbers, the latter especially true for the big, stonking two-handers you'll be using (if you've got good taste, that is).
Well, turns out, the game has a killer unique ring for you that's basically best-in-slot for any stagger build, whether you're a based Slayer like me or something lame like a Spellblade Mage (sorry, Robin). It's called the Call of the Hall ring, and it's your new best friend.

20 years later, Konami just finally revealed who played Eva in MGS3 and how she acted making out with Naked Snake
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/20-years-later-konami-just-finally-revealed-who-played-eva-in-mgs3-and-how-she-acted-making-out-with-naked-snake/
Metal Gear Solid is a series about mystery. Who are the Patriots? What's become of the Philosophers' Legacy? What did the Boss really get up to in WW2? What was that noise? Whose footprints are these?
But none of Kojima's tricksy riddles measure up to the biggest mystery of all: Who on Earth is Suzetta Miñet, the actor credited with playing MGS3's Eva—a motorcycling Bond girl with the serial numbers filed off—back in 2004? Players have been trying to puzzle it out for years, and yet Konami, Kojima, and Eva's actor have kept schtum. Until today. Until less than an hour ago at time of writing, actually.

The diea of AMD and Intel mergin is inconceivable, at least to me. And also very frightening. They're the only relevant x86 chip makers and their merge would completely disrupt the market with one giant monopoly.

I don't think it will happen (even if it's only because of all the problems to decide who takes which position and which company is the one on top, the one that's doing well or the bigger one).

Wow, I really want a 9800X3D, but my rig is too new to start making drastic changes. I should have built an AMD CPU rig. I still prefer Nvidia GPU.

Imagine they being able to charge for server CPUs as much as Nvidia charges for their data center GPUs (in terms of profit margin) :)
